Etymology

[edit]

Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Sanskrit चीन (cīna), via Middle Persian 𐭰𐭩𐭭 (čīn, China) (cf. Persian چینی (čini, Chinese; porcelain)), made, like most other country names, into a feminine 4th-declension noun. The ultimate source is apparently the name of the Qin (or Ch'in, in the Wade-Giles transcription system) dynasty.
