Borrowed from French champagne (sparkling wine from the Champagne region), from Champagne (region and former province of France), from Late Latin campānia (a clipping of Campānia Rēmēnsis), from campāneus (of or pertaining to the fields), from Latin campus (level ground; field, plain). Doublet of kampanjo and kampo.
