Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اوزن (üzen, özen, pains, pains-taking),[1][2] from اوز (öz, pith, essence, the self), from Proto-Turkic *ȫŕ (inside, the essential part, the self),[3][4] morphologically öz-en.

From Proto-Turkic *ögüŕ (small river).[5][6][7] Compare Karakhanid اُوزْ (öz, small river between two mountains), اُكُزْ (öküz, ögüz, ügüz, river; ox),[8] Old Turkic 𐰇𐰏𐰕 (ügz, small river). Cognates with Azerbaijani özən, Tatar үзән (üzän).
