Hey, Felix. I noticed you redirected User:Felix to your new name. But you said that User:Felix was taken for WMF global login purposes. I'm not sure what will happen if that User:Felix comes here and an account gets created for him. LtPowers (talk) 22:22, 14 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi LtPowers, thanks for pointing that out, Felix is not taken for global log in purposes, but it is registered as a WP user account so I cannot use it there. It looks like a dead account though and has only only been active on one article about a Spanish sociologist and a couple of edits on an associated article, all on WP. The name user has been inactive since September 2010. See here: http://toolserver.org/~quentinv57/tools/sulinfo.php?username=Felix&showinactivity=1&showblocks=1&showlocked=1
My only real concern is that someone else comes along and picks up the Felix name at WV. I tried to register it and could not, I get a message "Login error The name "Felix" is too similar to the existing account:" so hopefully it is hogtied. I would actually rather just use Felix as a User name but it seems all too hard. My painting out of the WV Felix user space is partly to redirect any confusion from the use my these 2 names across to my Talk page, and also to encumber that name space. If you have any ideas on a way to deal with this I would be most receptive but I think if someone has the name they have it, even if inactive. As I have activities over more than one Wiki the log in issue is problematic. If I log into WP its cookie was over-riding my existing WV login and pushing me into the similar named WV user space. Ideally I should register the name Felix in the WV user space, but I cannot. Maybe you can assist and then I can use it as a sockpuppet if I have any need for one. --Felix (talk) 23:26, 14 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
I wouldn't worry too much about it, I guess. I don't know how I'd go about creating the account for you anyway. LtPowers (talk) 23:44, 14 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

No worries, all looks good. Was just keen to clean up the Adelaide page a bit, was a bit outdated since the migration over. Amda5892 (talk) 03:09, 16 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Amda5892, oh thanks for letting me know, I was a bit worried I may have blundered in on top of a new editor and spooked them. It looks like this is not the first time you have edited a Wiki page. Have you found your way here from WT, or are you a WP editor stretching their legs? What-ever, great to see you here. -- Felix (talk) 03:15, 16 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

My internet connection is somewhat erratic at the moment and your recent note here slipped past me even though I was online. Thank you for letting me know about this. I see the extra 'options' have now appeared on my page displays. I will venture forth with some trepidation. Please forgive me if I might need to defer to those with more admin experience for a while as I get my footings established with these new liabilities. Thank you, and to the others who expressed such gracious support for my recent recommendation. Certainly I will strive to ensure I do not embarrass any of you for providing your support to the this variation in my participation here. I will endeavour to sharpen my tap dancing skills in a manner appropriate to the new buttons. -- cheers Felix (talk) 18:15, 3 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Indonesian folk beliefs

Hi, Felix. I've made a few edits to that section and may make another, but I'd like to request for you to make any edits that would improve the section. You are more knowledgeable about Indonesia than I am. Are you Indonesian, yourself, by the way?

I suspect I mislaid both my spacecraft and my Babel fish was in the wrong ear last night as nothing much makes any sense to me on a re-read of the above. I should have been on my way off to some local Maulid celebrations that are sustained for an interminable period throughout my region and was a bit confused in my response. What I meant to suggest was I was doing a flying visit to my computer, had a scrambled brain and a very bad case of jam karet on my hands and would return to WV soon lest I needed some encouragement with a serious scolding to give me a hurry up. I did get out the door about 15 minutes later, and I did need a scolding to get me into suitable motion. Saya datang dari New York. Orang Asli in Malay means "aboriginal." The Orang Asli are the people who live mostly in the interior of the Malay Peninsula, who are not Malays and were in some cases already there long before the Malays showed up. The term "Orang Asli" is sometimes used for people like the Iban and Kadazan in Sabah and Sarawak, too, but they are treated differently by the Malaysian government because Sabah and Sarawak natives are treated as Bumiputra, whereas though the Orang Asli in the Peninsula are often theoretically considered to be Bumiputra, the practice is often quite different and different parts of the Malaysian government may have different views on their status. Oh, of course, I see what you mean, and I should have realised that myself straight away. My own context is one of life within an Indonesian indigenous society as a subset of broader Indonesian society, often my language is effected by that. The Indonesian government has a specific policy in regard to the Adat of orang Papua/Irian, orang Baduy, and orang Sasak. I managed to paint in a few layers of confusion last night. I do understand what you are referring to in the Malaysian context. Australia has an interesting example of the use of aborigine. The indigenous people of Australia are referred to as Aborigines, (with the capitalisation). -- Felix (talk) 21:03, 2 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I want to do some work on that Indonesia article but just don't seem to be able to get to it. There are some issues I would like to tidy up on the Indonesia Talk page also as the language use issue is a bit bothersome, but likewise my available time is not providing me with enough focus to be coherent about it.
We are in the midst of Maulid at the moment and that comes with a lot of social obligations and travelling about. Also I have some projects screaming at me for attention. I enjoy the dialogue though as it forces me to view the social environment and context through the eyes of others. It helps to remind me of how we all develop our own 'perception' filters. It also helps me with my regular work as that 'filtering' also impacts heavily upon that, but time is a bit elusive to me at the moment, especially with Maulid maulidan terus in my current location.--- Felix (talk) 18:05, 2 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Gili Islands

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your additions to the Gili Islands article. Nice to see more people getting involved to keep things up to date. I was just curious as to the stated amount for one way tickets on fast boats ($25), where can you get it that cheap?

Also i would like to draw your attention to the following articles about jellyfish sting treatment in which use of vinegar is not reccommended, as it can actually cause more pain: http://www.mydr.com.au/allergy/bluebottle-stings http://au.lifestyle.yahoo.com/banzai/ocean/feature/-/12694152/how-to-treat-a-bluebottle-sting/ (This is regarding the more dangerous Blue Bottle Jellyfish) Natataek (talk) 13:14, 11 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Natataek, tourists are often bamboozled into paying over 1 million, however Rp 250,000 is an achievable price. If you are familiar with the Fastboat services you may know that lower prices are often provided for the lower grade or more dubious operators, however higher prices often still provide the less desirable operators, and they are all a bit suspect in terms of the appropriateness of their vessels, operational standards and conditions. The near complete absence of S&R capacity and potential for response in the event of an accident, especially well out to sea, and more so in inclement weather is also problematic.
Marina Srikandi http://www.marinasrikandi.com/schedule.html are advertising Padang Bai to Senggigi (via Gili islands) for Rp 250,000 online at the moment. I was not actually referring to that in the article though, more so as a base ticket rate if visitors avoid high mark-up agents. In any case their operation gets a lot of bad feedback.
If visitors seek the convenience of online booking through someone like http://gilibookings.com/bali-to-gili-fast-boat then they should expect to pay more for the service, and it's implied legitimacy, ie, if it does not work out they have options like seeking a credit card payment reversal, that is not going to happen with most reseller agents, they will likely just ignore a disgruntled customer. As for the jellyfish, per your link http://au.lifestyle.yahoo.com/banzai/ocean/feature/-/12694152/how-to-treat-a-bluebottle-sting/ "if you cannot clearly identify a jellyfish sting as due to a harmless jellyfish or bluebottle, then it is safer to treat the sting with vinegar and to call for medical help."
I am certainly not rejecting your input in regard to the appropriateness of vinegar, but do consider that vinegar has been used (by those who are aware of it's potential) for some time in the region to good effect, including by a few local (spear) fishermen I know.
As to content in those articles I am normally fairly active on all 4 of them, plus Bangsal, and in normal circumstances 'patrol' the edits there reasonably frequently. I have been a bit distracted in the last few weeks and my patrolling has been a bit sloppy, indeed near non-existent during that time. If you dig back well into the article histories you will see my activities there. If you would like to keep an eye on those articles as well then that would be rather nice. A few people do but one more would be a great leap forward, especially if you are familiar with the area yourself.
It would be really good to see some enthusiastic and informed input into all those articles so if you feel the urge then don't hesitate. Accommodation listings are all a bit tired, and the Eat section on each island really needs an update injection.
The Tanjung article was established a fair while back and it could really use some updating and a good content injection. There are quite a few things along the coast in that area that might appeal to some visitors. A lot of the more touristic related activities are south of Pemenang, if you want to do some work on that area at any time and think there is sufficient information for an article then Teluk Nare/Pemenang might justify an article, but we would need to ensure it was not too thin. That is too far south to include in Tanjung. It does of course bear the significance of being the Speedboat departure point, and the Fastboat landing point. That alone likely supports a good reason for an article.
Please don't "update" anything in the WikiVoyage articles that has Wikitravel as a source unless you verify every detail of it yourself, ensure it is MoS and guideline compliant and that you 'write it in your own words'. Please don't 'copy' anything from there, even though it is CC-BY-SA. That website is a dreadful mess and since it lost the overwhelming majority of admins and established contributors it has highly dubious content value. I visited the WT Mount Rinjani article yesterday and tidied up the Rinjani article as it really pained me to see the misleading mess it was becoming. It is not something I intend making a habit of doing as I am somewhat estranged from that project and consider it to be a lost cause, indeed that is why a large number of WT contributors eventually walked away. However the misleading content could really cause some people grief if they were doing a mountain ascent, so I cleaned it out. -- Thanks for leaving me the note, and do contact me anytime if you want to discuss any of the Lombok articles.-- cheers Felix (talk) 15:08, 11 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, cheers for the informative response! The material i copied was mostly of my~own authorship, and i did it as a newbie to voyage (pretty fresh to the whole wiki thing actually), having only just learned of the migration. I'm happy to keep my eye on these pages, and would sure like to contribute more in the near future when i find the time. Thanks for the tips and i look forward to collaborating with you soon. re: gili dive shop order

[edit]

Hi, thanks for the message. I had noticed the change back and already returned it to chronological order, sorry. My opinion is that it implies level of experience and establishment of the different shops on the Island and therefore gives the reader a feel for the old and new. Some travelers look for experience, while others prefer newer facilities. That's my thinking. Also, i deem alphabetical order to bestow an unfair advantage based solely on name, which may influence company naming in the future.

I'm happy to discuss it on the page talk and go with common consensus, though! Natataek (talk) 15:37, 11 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes sorry if it seemed a bit blunt with the previous return to ABC ordering. My revert just now was only to put it back to standard listing format. I am of course sympathetic to your POV on this, some of the operators are highly qualified, others are much 'lighter'. Hopefully that is expressed sufficiently in the listing content and descriptions, and that is the normal way of that being clarified. The issue with doing something like that is it can be a bit subjective, and some may argue that the 'ranking' is not suitable to their perceived position, it is fraught with 'consensus issues', that is why the alphabet has some appeal in these matters. But do outline what you want to do and why on the Talk page and you are near certain to get some input and clarification from some of the others here. If not, then take it across to Travellers' pub and raise it there for a broader input. I am pretty sure that you only re-ordered again in your recent edits, but if you 'updated' some (listing) content detail and I missed it then please accept my apologies. -- cheers Felix (talk) 15:48, 11 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

planning to change the boat tickets section to this....thoughts?

[edit]

You can contact the fast boat companies directly by phone or email, or book via one of the many local travel agents once you are in Bali. Alternatively, the only way to compare live seat availability and book e-tickets online is with Gilibookings, where you can view all routes, timetables and pricing for the most reliable fast boat companies. Prices for these companies range from $50-70 one way, $98-136 return depending upon departure point, the route and the operator. Usually this price includes pickup from your hotel.

Cheaper tickets can also be found with other companies (cheapest one way $25, return $50 excluding pickup), but you pay for what you get so don't expect safety or service to be a priority with the low budget operators.

A small selection of fast boat companies with a proven track record: ...

-- As you can see, i've attempted to make a clearer distinction between cheaper/less safe and more expensive/trusted operators. Also, i emailed Marina Srikandi for a quote and they said 350k one way (includes pickup) so 25 may be a bit on the low side?

Here's the email:

Dear Mr,

the price is 350K for oneway trip and 580K for return trip

On 12-Mar-13 12:18 AM: Hi,

I want to get from Kuta to Gili Tarawangan on friday the 22nd march. What would be the total cost?

-- Just wanted to get your thoughts before i plunge forward ;) Natataek (talk) 13:13, 12 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Natataek, Maybe a 'lunge' at Marina Srikandi would be more appropriate. They are openly advertising Rp 250,000 for a ticket (1-way) from Padang Bai all the way through to Senggigi http://www.marinasrikandi.com/schedule.html
It comes as little surprise why some many people get confused, and frankly that is why I just left the gilibookings prompt in there. It might cost them more to use that service but at least they have someone to talk to if it doesn't work out as it should.
In regard to pricing (on 14 March2013 for travel on 22 March 2013); ~Rp 30,000-35,000 Kuta to Airport in a metered taxi, Rp 40,000 PSC, Rp 246,000-257,000 1-way Lion Air JT1856 or JT1853, Rp 17,500 Taxi Service Change at LOP, Rp 210,000-220,000 taxi (metered) to Bangsal, Rp 10,000 Ferry ticket (Public boat).
Total around Rp 555,000-570,000 from Kuta to Gili Trawangan 1 PAX travelling alone, around Rp 450,000 if 2 PAX are travelling together (because the taxi price is spread over 2 PAX). Should be on Gili T <5hours post departure from Kuta.
I would not even bother going all the way from Kuta to Padang Bai to venture upon uncertain seas in an equally uncertain boat running on with a somewhat questionable operating schedule. Total end to end costs and travel times are in a comparable range with the air services when all factors are considered. The road northeast to Padang Bai has varying trip times and is difficult to quantify. The frequent pre-boarding and pre-departure delays are similarly difficult to quantify. The trips over the water are frequently well in excess of that advertised by the vendors and providers and also subject to direct impacts from the vagaries of the weather, sea conditions and performance of the craft and operator.
A comparison requires a determination of the cost and travel time of the transfer from Kuta to Padang Bai by road, then the addition of whatever Fastboat ticket price is available, and the total duration, from arrival at Padang Bai to arrival on-shore at Gili Trawangan. Very hard to quantify that as there are a lot of variables at hand.
Some of the tickets include that road transfer but have often been provided in uncomfortable vehicles and there are many reports of the passenger/s just being rudely and summarily tipped out on the roadside on the return transfers where passengers are arriving on Bali.
In regard to tourists obtaining tickets for Rp 250,000, that price seems reasonably commonplace, represented in the range Rp 250,000-300,000, especially in the current seasonal lull. Still many are also paying well above that, despite the seasonal influences, it appears to depend upon their own intuition, and whoever is doing the selling. Prices seem to be all over the place though. If I needed to between Bali and the Gili islands/Lombok tomorrow I would not do it on a Fastboat myself, and that is despite the very pleasant weather prevailing at the moment. BTY, I have spent a bit of time on the sea, I have a healthy respect for it, and I have found myself in somewhat interesting maritime circumstances on a few occasions. Hence I have provided a costing by air. Today may serve as a good example of that changeability, a bright sunny day wit a calm sea changed very quickly just before 15:00 presenting winds, an entirely different sea and a good amount of rain.
If you feel really quite confident about some new content then put it into the article, it can always be edited later. However this is a vexatious matter, so it could benefit from some critical examination and further development of guiding advice or information for travellers.
Though I agree with your modification to a point it also presents a problem. Some of the cheaper operators are sold at high prices, especially by some of the eager Fastboat ticket vendors on Bali, they are up-selling the cheaper operators with high ticket prices, hence for many visitors it may not be a matter of 'getting what you pay for'.
Perhaps give some consideration toward encouraging an assessment by total trip time, total cost, and relative safety and comfort levels.
Fortunately the Lombok end is a lot easier to quantify in cost and travel time than is the equivalent trip to Padang Bai on Bali. The road on Lombok is rarely congested (weddings and funerals) and in good condition, it is also a quite scenic transfer route.
It seems that travellers are often encouraged to purchase Fastboat tickets by dubious resellers who advise them that Padang Bai is a lot closer to South Bali than it really is, that the air services either don't exist, or have very limited schedules, are very "expensive", are "dangerous" and "often crash". That is of course nothing but a ludicrous range of fabrications engineered to encourage people to buy a Fastboat ticket. -- Felix (talk) 06:08, 14 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • in reality the 'transfers' on Bali can be a bit rudimentary, so maybe price wise they should be compared using the quite comfortable, modern and airconditioned DAMRI Airport service from LOP to Senggigi, plus a subsequent metered taxi ride from Senggigi to Bangsal. The trip time would increase by 30-40 minutes as the bus often stops for set-downs on route, then again that is also a feature of convenience for those who are not perhaps going all the way through to the terminus.
  • In regard to pricing (on 14 March2013 for travel on 22 March 2013); ~Rp 30,000-35,000 Kuta to Airport in a metered taxi, Rp 40,000 PSC, Rp 246,000-257,000 1-way Lion Air JT1856 or JT1853, Airport bus Rp 25,000, Rp 65,000 taxi (metered) to Bangsal, Rp10,000 Ferry ticket (Public boat). So that comes out at Rp 420,000 for 1 PAX, or or around Rp390,000 if 2 PAX are travelling together. -- Felix (talk) 06:25, 14 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your thoughts! I follow you, you certainly make some valid points! I've attempted to add some of what you said in the small new edit i just made (see article). I hope that by placing clear advice in these sections, most readers will have a relatively objective idea of the situation and realize that flights may indeed be a better option in many cases and that boat standards may improve as more travelers are made aware of the risks and opt for better services. Though i would suggest a more meaty discussion of one mode of transport vs. others is perhaps best left to forums/discussion pages? Personally, I think the article is getting towards a good balance between adequate info and up to date advice on the subject of transport options. Let me know what you think. Cheers! Natataek (talk) 10:18, 14 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
We need to be cautious regarding Gilibookings in the article as they are a booking service rather than a provider. Under the prevailing conditions their provision of route maps and schedules, plus the ability to book with some certainty and pay by CC does possibly make them a better choice than many of the booking services and even the Fastboat providers themselves in some cases. However we need to be cautious in the article as normally a booking service would not be listed, only the provider themselves. Your recent edit clarifies the pricing disparities quite nicely but the article should not really feature a booking service. I am leaving it there for now in the travellers interest as the bookings can be problematic for many people, however there are (some) other booking services that are quite OK and generally the policy is not to list them, however this one is currently only mentioned in the prose, by name and without a link, and in the context of supplying useful information, that being the route maps and schedules. -- Felix (talk) 20:49, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Johor Bahru

[edit]

Hi Felix, hope you are doing fine. JB is still outstanding for OtBP but is badly needs some work. It actually doesn't need content but i has way to much. Do you have some time to help out with shortening and mosing the article? Otherwise its ready for the slush pile. Regards, jan (talk) 11:28, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Every I look at that article my head spins. I have seen phone books with less information. I will try to look at it but it is hard to know what is current, and what is worthwhile or useful. I often also wonder if some of it is copy-vio or just a heck of a lot of menu not taking. It is better than it used to be. -- Felix (talk) 11:40, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Felix, its not a copy-vio, the anon IP that added the stuff must be a local with loads of spare time or someone from the tourist office. Whatever the reason, most things are from 2010/11. I tried my best but i'm lost about how much to delete. Especially hotels and restaurants are a nightmare. I fear that we have the complete yellow pages of the city for this sections. I always stayed in Singapore, so the hotel section is imho the most difficult... jan (talk) 11:45, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I looked over some of the content a long while ago and came to the same conclusion concerning (not) copy-vio but I was not thorough in my enquiry. It does look more like a lot of menu note taking and if so someone has spent a lot of time on it. I wonder if I have the heart for it, that is part of the reason I have wandered away on it before. If the information has integrity it would be sad to see it swept into a black hole. There is no doubt it overburdens the article. Can you think of anything that could be done with it in the WV context. -- Felix (talk) 15:49, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

My apologies for my apparent current disengagement with WV and laxity in my normal project activities and involvement.

I have been moving house, also tied up in a quite distracting project, and then commenced travelling extensively in a region with little or no internet access. Hi Ikan, yes I am pleased to report that I am still alive. I will try to visit a bit more often as I have been a bit remiss lately. I do hope you have been keeping well also.

I actually was very sick a couple of weeks ago, but nothing that killed me. :-) Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:44, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Mount Rinjani

[edit]

Hi, Felix!

I've nominated Mount Rinjani for OtBP though some sections in the article still have to be expanded. I saw you've participated in discussions on the article's talk page and edited the article quite a bit and therefore guessed you may have some knowledge about this mountain and perhaps would like to help out. Administrator status (Official Notice)

[edit]
A similar message was also sent via e-mail.

Thanks for your service as a Wikivoyage administrator. As you may be aware, our Wikivoyage:Administrators policy indicates that administrators who have not edited on the English Wikivoyage in over two years should have their administrator flags removed. This is for account security purposes, not a reflection of a loss of trust or any disappointment.

As such, we will be removing your administrator flag on 7 November 2018. Should you wish to retain your status, simply come on back and make an edit! That resets the clock. And if you ever decide to return to Wikivoyage as an active editor, your administrator flag can be restored by request.

If you have any questions or concerns, let me know.
