Talbingo Dam, one of the dams created as part of the Snowy Mountains hydro-electric scheme

Talbingo is a small town in the Snowy Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia.

Understand

[edit]

Talbingo exists primarily to service the nearby Talbingo Dam and other parts of the Snowy Hydro project. With a population of 200, there's not all that much going on, but it's the nearest settlement of any size to the Yarrangobilly Caves, about 35 km south by road.

Get in

[edit]

Talbingo is around 3 km off the Snowy Mountains Highway (B72), about 30 min south of Tumut and 1 hr north of Adaminaby.

See

[edit]
  • 1 Talbingo Dam (about 9 km south of town). The town's nemesis and raison d'etre: it flooded the original and spawned the current incarnation. Talbingo Dam (Q2389930) on Wikidata Talbingo Dam on Wikipedia

Do

[edit]
  • 1 Talbingo Country Club, Bridle St, 61 2 6949 5260. The rather grandly named Talbingo Country Club is a modest structure that houses Talbingo's only bar, only restaurant plus a 6-room motel. The 9-hole golf course is always open, just pop some cash in the honesty box if no-one's around.

Buy

Eat

[edit]
  • 1 Happy Chilli Garden, Bridle St (at the country club), 61 2 6949 5634. The only restaurant in Talbingo serves country town Chinese-Australian classics like sizzling Mongolian beef and prawn toast. (Despite the name, chillies are in short supply.) Also has a limited Western menu of deep-fried staples like chips and schnitzels. $25.
  • Studio on Jounama, Cafe Talbingo. Devonshire tea and toasties.
