This hymn, along with its companion hymns "An Evening Hymn" and "A Midnight Hymn", was first published in the 1697 edition of Ken's Manual of Prayers for Winchester Scholars. The final verse became popular on its own as the hymn "Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow".
