Please help us test our congressional look-up data before the blackout!
To test it, go to http://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:CongressLookup?zip=XXXXX, but change "XXXXX" to your zip code. Then see if all the information looks correct. If there are any errors or omissions, please list them below.
Errors and omissions
[edit]- Zip code 08505 brings back Jon Runyan (R, NJ-3) as the representative. However, Bordentown (08505) is located in New Jersey's 4th district and is represented by Chris Smith.
- ZIP code 49519 doesn't return Rep. Amash (Michigan's 3rd District). This ZIP code was split from 49509 about a decade ago, and for some reason, rarely comes up in database searches. Imzadi 1979 → 10:59, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zip 11720, Tim Bishop's contact link should be https://timbishopforms.house.gov/contact-form/ Johnduhart (talk) 11:02, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Fixed. Kaldari (talk) 20:00, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Entering a zipcode of 99999999.... returns Sen. Lisa Murkowski [R, AK] and Sen. Mark Begich [D, AK]. (No representative!)
- That's actually the correct response believe it or not. Kaldari (talk) 20:00, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Ignoring the fact that you just claimed that Alaska has Senators but not Representatives, No. It most definitely is not correct. The correct answer is "Error: Not a Valid ZIP Code." ZIP codes are not 256 digits long, and properly written software validates inputs before accepting it. Not doing so often creates subtle vulnerabilities. Has anyone tested to ensure that a 10GB-long zip code doesn't allow a buffer overflow attack? --03:46, 18 January 2012 (UTC)~
- http://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:CongressLookup?zip=10 returns Sen. John Kerry [D, MA] and Sen. Scott Brown [R, MA]
- You really should validate user input. There are a number of example ZIP code validators on the web, depending on what language you use. --Guy Macon (talk) 12:14, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- 23456 and 23457 do not work ... they should be Scott Rigell. Instead, they're showing someone from North Carolina. 23322 is Randy Forbes. It is also showing the NC guy. 23703 is mostly in Bobby Scott's district (it may actually completely be in his district - not 100% sure if Randy still has any of it now or not), but it is showing up as Randy. --B (talk) 13:59, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Doesn't work for zips that are split across House districts -- I live in such a district (zip = 95616) and the app pulls up the wrong rep (Lundgren, CA-3, vs Thompson, CA-5). house.gov points people to https://tools.usps.com/go/ZipLookupAction!input.action to get 4s to fix this. Interestingly http://whoismyrepresentative.com/search/zip/95616 works -- I wonder if there's a different or more fine API to use. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 16:21, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zip code 94114 lists Jackie Speier (CA-12) as my representative, but I am in Nancy Pelosi's district (CA-8). In fact, I'm fairly sure that my zip code is entirely within CA-8, which makes this all the more odd. Zachlipton (talk) 17:52, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zip 94117 lists Jackie Speier (CA-12) as my representative, but I am in Nancy Pelosi's district (CA-8). LeslieCarr (talk) 18:31, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zip 94127 - Jackie Speier (CA-12) contact form 404s. Correct form -- RobLa (talk) 22:38, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zip code 94706 lists Rep. John Garamendi [D, CA-10]. Barbara Lee [D, CA-9] represents at least some of 94706. The official House website claims that 94706 is a shared zipcode, so it might be that some is Garamendi and some is Lee, but my address specifically is represented by Lee. Maplebed (talk) 18:33, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zip code 98146 - Jim McDermott form 404s. Correct form
Zip 98664 lists a Representative in another state (OR) instead of the correct WA rep. Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 18:52, 17 January 2012 (UTC)>- Fixed. Kaldari (talk) 20:06, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zip 45769 List a Representative from WV. Rep. Shelley Capito [R, WV-2]. The Zip code is an Ohio Zip code and the rep their is Bill Johnson [R, OH-6] {http://billjohnson.house.gov/} Nhajivandi (talk) 23:56, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- 60169 should list Rep. Joe Walsh [R, IL-8], but it is omitted. ~FeedintmParley 00:41, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zip Code 48858 - David Camp form 404s. Correct form
- Zip Code 48356 - Thaddeus McCotter form 404s. Correct form
- Zip 91107 should list Rep. Adam Schiff [D, CA-29], but instead lists Rep. David Dreier [R, CA-26]. Dreier represents a bordering district, but as far as I know all of 91107 is Schiff's district.
- Zip Code 00803 - Minor issue: Delegate Christensen (VI) has no fax number listed. Her contact page lists (202) 225-5517. nandhp (talk) 02:28, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zip Code 19040 - Most of the zip code is represented by Allyson Schwartz [D, PA-13], not Mike Fitzpatrick [R, PA-8]. Dough4872 03:02, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zip Code 19530 - Most of the zip code is represented by Jim Gerlach [R, PA-6], not Tim Holden [D, PA-17]. Dough4872 03:09, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zip Code 19090 - Most of the zip code is represented by Allyson Schwartz [D, PA-13], not Mike Fitzpatrick [R, PA-8]. Dough4872 03:14, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zip Code 19090 - Glenn Thompson [R, PA-5] is nowhere near the zip code. Dough4872 04:38, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zips 06117, 06007 and 06002 bring up Chris Murphy in CT 5. They belong to John Larson in CT 1 (a SOPA cosponsor). GabrielF (talk) 03:30, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- Zip 02135 lists Ed Markey (MA 7). At least some of it and I believe most of it are in MA 8 - Michael Capuano's district. GabrielF (talk) 03:37, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
Discussion, comments, suggestions
[edit]- Should we flag the current co-sponsors of SOPA and PIPA when we give out their contact information? People might like to know if their representative supports one of the bills. --AlecMeta (talk) 17:11, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- We don't want to do this for legal reasons. Kaldari (talk) 20:07, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
