There is a draft for this topic at Draft:John R. Gregg. It has not been submitted for review. You could this by clicking th blue submit button. However if you did so now, it would be declined; the draft contains no references and does not resemble a Wikipedia article. Please review the guide to article creation and do not write in allcaps. Please explain this weird diff

[edit]

In this diff, the edit went through (see my PS below), but there is a "restore this version" link at the top of the diff. Why? What happened? Was there a reversion or not? User in question is likely a troll pretending to be an idiot, FYI.

Background (but not the source of the problem) I opted, in preferences, to have some sort of advanced view of diffs recently, not sure what it's called, though.

PS: I looked for the added citation, and found it still in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Quisqualis (talkcontribs) 03:25, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Quisqualis: Could you clarify your question? "Restore this version" is most likely from WP:TWINKLE, which when clicked allows the user to revert the page back to the selected revision. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.)Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 🎄Happy Holidays!03:36, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't opt for Twinkle, and it's not important, provided you are familiar with "Restore this version". Does "Restore this version" refer to the article with or without without that edit? It's important to undo the edit, preferably not manually, as it doesn't support the article.--Quisqualis (talk) 03:43, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
When you click the undo link, does the resulting page say it's possible to undo the change? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 🎄Happy Holidays!05:00, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
User:Tenryuu, some of them, for example, this one say that there are intermediate edits. Others, for example, this one say the edit is already done. Is there any visual hallmark so I can tell one from the other just by viewing the diff?--Quisqualis (talk) 05:20, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid that's beyond me. "Restore this version" will revert to the revision selected underneath it. For example, restoring the version of "Fly-by-wire" will revert it to what it was on 25 December 2020, 6:25. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 🎄Happy Holidays!07:50, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Quisqualis: Many of your edits use Twinkle so at some time you enabled it at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. Twinkle makes "restore this version" links. It restores the full page version at that time. "undo" is made by MediaWiki and only tries to undo the specific changes made in a diff while leaving any other changes alone. The software doesn't tell or examine whether an undo is possible before you click "undo". PrimeHunter (talk) 08:55, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Although I don't recall opting for it, PrimeHunter, I see that I do have Twinkle. I recently changed a number of preferences and must have forgotten that one. I'm less confused than I was, and thanks for that.--Quisqualis (talk) 17:34, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Amina Maher´s Page

[edit]

Dear team of Help Desk,

I hope you are doing great.

I am new at Wikipedia and I am trying to edit the article, Amin Maher.

I made two mistakes which will not be repeated. One was that I named a youtube link of the Persian TV Channel Iran International as a reference. And the second one was about uploading images without providing permission. I will certainly upload the permission in the first week of January. But I do not know why my new changes to this page is not being applied. Even though that I provide the permitted references and make new changes base on those changes.

Please kindly let me know. Thank you so much, Reza — Preceding unsigned comment added by Reza Kamalifar (talkcontribs) 04:20, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

DAB guidance please

[edit]

Currently suffering a bit of brain fade after a busy bout of editing, I created a new DAB page out of what was previously redirect (to the Pearson InformIT), at Informit, only to discover InformIT (disambiguation). It's complicated by the upper/lower-case thing, and I'm not sure what the best approach to these are. Can someone provide advice please, or refer me to one of the resident DAB experts? Laterthanyouthink (talk) 07:04, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. Coming back to this (although probably won't have time to finish it until tomorrow), I realise that I need to create a separate short article for "Informit (database)" to properly explain the history of that, because it was created in print form first by a completely different entity, and has some history and other alternative names and acronyms worth recording - so this will create a third item for a DAB page. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 08:24, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Page and content administrator Help

[edit]

Hello, I represent a client by the name of Luka Rocco Magnotta and he has contacted me with a request to make changes to his own personal Wikipedia account. He says some of the information is entirely slanderous and fails at any attempt to convey accurate information based upon him. I have at the request of himself to ask that I am granted full administrative rights since the information is pertaining to him that this is a switch that should not be difficult. I have also received a transfer request for such privileges and that will be sent in private to any admin that can assist in this personal request directly from Luka Magnotta himself, I appreciate your time and thank you. kind regards -Matthew Scott Shireman — Preceding unsigned comment added by LukaTheTruth (talkcontribs) 11:18, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello LukaTheTruth. Wether you are talking about Luka Rocco Magnotta or something completely different, first read the links WP:OWN and WP:PAID very carefully and follow the guidance there. After doing so, you can make suggestions based on WP:RS at the talkpage of the article in question. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:31, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello LukaTheTruth. When you say "his own personal Wikipedia account" do you mean his user page? If so, it's pretty unlikely that there are any restrictions on who can edit that and I'd just go ahead and edit it how you like. If you mean the article bearing the name Luka Rocco Magnotta which redirects to Murder of Jun Lin then that's not his but anyway you can use the {{Edit semi-protected}} template on the article's talk page as Gråbergs Gråa Sång suggests, and someone will respond to that request pretty quickly. I cannot see any particular reason why an administrator would need to be involved in that process, why were you thinking that would be needed? You must of course, also follow the process for declaring paid editing on your own user page in either scenario. --Paultalk11:46, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The publisher is missing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 175.33.22.186 (talk) 12:34, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's not super helpful to refer to the references by number outside of the article, as they are prone to change every time an edit is made (think, talking to a librarian about the 10th book from the left out of the one's that are currently on the shelf). I can only assume you're talking about Grace's Guide to British Industrial History in which case the publisher is Grace's Guide Ltd. I've amended the citation to make that clear. --Paultalk13:14, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In the case of a website, per Template:Cite web "Do not use the publisher parameter for the name of a work (e.g. a website, book, encyclopedia, newspaper, magazine, journal, etc.) ... Omit where the publisher's name is substantially the same as the name of the work". Eagleash (talk) 13:46, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

List of UK Christmas Charts and Christmas Number 1 for UK

[edit]

The list of Christmas charts and Christmas #1's is very misleading due to the silly week ending advanced week dates, from the UK Broadcast, media and Promos as info of the data from sales and units is taken before christmas day or the start of christmas week (from 6 days to only 24th Christmas eve max, that not really a true christmas counting), so therefore, i will always follow the weeks after christmas charts! as that is more of a true accurate data of what people have been buying, downloading and streaming over the festive period, so wiki need to add some more description on this matter to warn people that is does not add christmas week data and its reached for the run up to christmas or pre-christmas. Thank You — Preceding unsigned comment added by Baydev87 (talkcontribs) 12:08, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Baydev87, what is your relationship to Routea380i and Sunhill-a380? All three of you have been edit warring on this very subject at List of UK Singles Chart Christmas number ones for days, and I've seen at least two previous requests either here or at the Teahouse. Not one of you has raised the issue at Talk:List of UK Singles Chart Christmas number ones, which is the proper place to discuss it, not here. If you can get consensus for the changes you want to make, then well and good. If you do not, then drop the stick. In any case, stop your disruptive editing. Please also read BRD, RIGHTGREATWRONGS and WP:SOCK. --ColinFine (talk) 14:31, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I already advised this person (and clearly all three accounts are the same person) to raise it on the talk page, but this has evidently fallen on deaf ears. I even added a footnote to the article itself clarifying that Christmas Day sales/streams don't play a part in determining the Christmas number one (even though there is literally no one else who has an issue with this that I know of), in the hope that they would be satisfied with this. But it appears they are intent on continuing with their disruptive edits regardless. MFlet1 (talk) 16:26, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate name needs profession after name

[edit]

I've just created Danny Vera (singer), and so I think Danny Vera should be renamed to Danny Vera (footballer) to avoid confusion? Also I can't link the page in the Dutch version. Some kind of bug I think. Best regards, Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 14:19, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on how prominent the Danny Veras are, or in other words what readers would be more likely to be looking for. If it's about equal, then yes, each should have the profession in the title and the plain Danny Vera page could be a disambiguation. If one is more prominent than the other, then the undisambiguated Danny Vera title would go to the more prominent one. This should be discussed on the article talk page, perhaps as a formal Request for Comment. 331dot (talk) 14:51, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for responding 331dot. I opened the discussion on Danny Vera's talk page. Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 16:08, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK it doesn't look like people will respond there. Since these two Danny Vera's are equally famous, the plain Danny Vera page should be renamed to Danny Vera (footballer). Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 10:05, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Moved Wikiquote article now has "Wikiquote:" in the title

[edit]

I tried moving my Wikiquote article "History of Chemistry (book)" to "History of Chemistry (Thorpe)" by choosing the title category "Wikiquote" and now the title is in Wikiquotes, but it is "Wikiquote:History of Chemistry (Thorpe)". If I choose the title category "main" instead, will that give me the correct title "History of Chemistry (Thorpe)" in Wikiquotes only, or will it mistakenly send the article to Wikipedia, where that title does not exist at present? ELApro (talk) 15:12, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ELApro: Choose "(Main)". It's in parentheses to hint there is something special. It's called mainspace but doesn't have a namespace name with a colon. You cannot move a page from one project to another like from Wikiquote to Wikipedia. There is a process called import which can copy a page to projects that allow it but it's different from a move. Question about the MediaWiki namespace

[edit]

I often see "this page has been deleted" messages at the top of MediaWiki pages, but, I still can see the pages. This only seems to appear in the MediaWiki namespace. Example: MediaWiki:Group-oversight. I'd like to ask why this happens. JJP...MASTER![talk to] JJP... master? 17:45, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@JJPMaster: You don't see a wiki page at MediaWiki:Group-oversight. You see a default message in the software. There are around 25,000 of them. If no page by that name exists at the wiki then the default is shown somewhere in the interface. In this case Special:ListGroupRights, the "Group" drop-down at Special:ListUsers, and probably elsewhere. If the page is created then its content is shown in those places. See more at Help:MediaWiki namespace. MediaWiki:Group-oversight is a blue link because there is default message by that name, unlike for example the red link MediaWiki:No such page. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:22, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, the deleted version of MediaWiki:Group-oversight said "Oversight". The current default displayed there is "Oversighters". The deletion summary hints that the default was something in lowercase at the time. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:28, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@JJPMaster: AFAIK are pages in MediaWIki Namespace somewhat like a Wikipedia:Global user page: If they exist locally, the local definitions will be used. Otherwise, they mirror the definitions for english on translatewiki.net, in this case [2]. Only if both versions are absent, the link is red. Victor Schmidt (talk) 18:59, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a direct mirror but many messages are periodically imported from translatewiki.net. Some messages made by extensions are not stored there. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:20, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

DavidJMoss, only articles in the main articlespace (i.e., without prefixes like User: or Wikipedia:) are indexed for search engines (and that takes either 90 days in mainspace or a new pages patroller to review, whichever comes first). You can get a reviewer to take a look at it by adding {{subst:submit}} to the top of your page, but I suggest reading Your first article and other current articles on Wikipedia to see how an article should be structured. Thank you for disclosing your conflict of interest; if you haven't already, the page WP:COI has more information pertaining to editors with conflicts of interest. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 🎄Happy Holidays!20:24, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, he's put the content in Draft:Tobey C. Moss (Art Dealer). You have submitted your draft for review, DavidJMoss: be patient. Wikipedia is staffed by volunteers who work on what they work on, when they want to work on it. However, in the meantime, you would be well advised to edit the draft, as at present it has no chance of being accepted, since it does not have a single reference that is independent of the subject. It is also very promotional in tone. Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources..
Also, I advise you to remove the duplicate text from your user page. (I have removed the tags round the COI notice you put there - thank you for declaring it - so that it displays correctly). --ColinFine (talk) 20:26, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
DavidJMoss, the sources for your draft do not demonstrate the subject's notability, as they do not involve unconnected entities writing about him. Reliable, independent, in-depth published sources are absolutely essential for demonstrating notability sufficient to be an entry in Wikipedia. Please read Your first article.--Quisqualis (talk) 21:35, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have put some suggestions on a talk page to your draft which you should see. I hope they are useful. Spinney Hill (talk) 11:52, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Colin, your donations are appreciated, but no one expects you to donate beyond your means or even desire. It's called a donation because it is voluntary and not required. As you do not have an account, Wikipedia has no way to know that the person sitting at your computer at any given moment has donated or seen the requests. As noted, if you create an account, you can suppress the notices. 331dot (talk) 20:25, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the notices aren’t shown to logged-in users any more, and the gadget to hide them is not currently necessary. (Sorry that I don’t have a link to the conversation, but I did see a W?F employee state that somewhere.) — Pelagicmessages ) – (14:08 Thu 31, AEDT) 03:08, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong labelling

[edit]

The list of Francophone Nations has a few countries listed,a total of 29 but are the number is wrongly labelled. At 23-25 it is not labelled correctly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 42.189.104.238 (talk) 20:22, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The numbers you are referring to are not numbers of the entries in the table, but the numbers of the footnotes which contain the references (which are an essential part of a Wikipedia article). The numbers that the software assigns to the references depend on where each reference is first used in the article; since some of the sources are used before the table, they have lower numbers than the references which are first used in the table. --ColinFine (talk) 20:30, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anonymous user, it looks like you've already fixed this. Thanks. --Paultalk20:45, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine:, looks like they actually were looking at entry numbers (although I couldn't say why they are present in that list). --Paultalk20:45, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The numbering had been wrong since a country was replaced in 2018.[3] Thanks for catching that. Another time you report a problem with a page, please give the exact title or URL. We have six million articles and the word "Francophone" does not appear in List of territorial entities where French is an official language. It was hard to guess the page until Special:Contributions/42.189.104.238 showed you had edited it. ColinFine may have started his reply before that. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:53, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see. Thank you PrimeHunter. It was obviously unreasonable of me to look at List of francophone countries, where the entries are not numbered. --ColinFine (talk) 23:02, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to see more than one revision in watchlist

[edit]

What setting do you change to get your watchlist to display more than one revision per page? I've done this before, but I can't find the setting. I tried Preferences -> Watchlist -> check "Expand watchlist to show all changes, not just the most recent" already, didn't work. Thanks. –Novem Linguae (talk) 20:35, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I figured it out. I needed to remove the "Latest Revision" option from the filter I was using. Thanks and have a great day. –Novem Linguae (talk) 20:55, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Linking to a specific page in a PDF

[edit]

I need to link to page 4-4 in http://publibfp.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/dz9zr010.pdf; for other documents I've been able to use the fragment page=foo to go to a specific page, but, e.g., http://publibfp.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/dz9zr010.pdf#page=2 takes me to page 1. Is there a way to do this? Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 20:36, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Chatul: It goes to page 2 for me, using IE. Maybe it is browser dependent. For anyone else wanting to test this, be aware it is a 40MB pdf. RudolfRed (talk) 21:10, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It has 1732 pages. #page=4 sometimes works for me, sometimes not. It may work better when the file is fully downloaded but that can take a while. The connection seems slow. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:13, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Chatul: This functionality is handled by the PDF's web server software in combination with your browser software. The Wikipedia servers are not involved in any way. This means that the functionality may vary a lot, since different sites use different server software and different users use different browser software and/or different PDF display plugins. I recommend that you add the "page=" parameter to the cite web template so the user can manually go to the correct page, just as they would need to do if they went to the library for a physical book. -Arch dude (talk) 21:28, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This Linking style is very dependent on the way your PDF viewer works. For example, in Firefox' built in PDF viewer, the #page=something isn't recognised, and the pages dont have HTML id attributes, so you cannot access them via #page2 either. What I do notice is that the PDF Generator used in this case added named destinations for section titles. For me (Firefox) you cant access page 4-4 directly, you can however extract the id for the section the content is in, [4], which ends up one page above. no "edit source" option available

[edit]

First time editing this page (to add a published book, a biography of the subject):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_Kight

searched "help" and saw that I need to click "edit source" at top of the page. that is not available. I only have "read" "edit" "view history."

I'd like to add: Cherry, Mary Ann (2020) Morris Kight, Humanist, Liberationist, Fantabulist: A Story of Gay Rights and Gay Wrongs (Process Media/Feral House ISBN: 9781934170809)

thank you ReRyter (talk) 20:52, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ReRyter, if you click on "edit", what kind of editor pops up? If it looks like the page with a toolbar on top, it's the visual editor, and if the page is replaced by code, it's the source editor. If you want both to appear, you can go into your Special:Preferences, navigate to the Editing tab, scroll down to the "Editor" section, and change "Editing mode" to "Show me both editor tabs". —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 🎄Happy Holidays!20:57, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ReRyter: To expand on that, make sure that Special:Preferences -> "Editing" -> "Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta" isn't checked. If it is, you will only ever use the source editor for editing. Victor Schmidt (talk) 07:45, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Manual reverts or Twinkle rollback

[edit]

I have a question. If you do a manual revert, or restore a previous revision in Twinkle, does the user/IP you reverted get a notification? I'm asking because there are some cases of clear disruption in which case it's better if they are not notified, such as this edit. —Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 22:33, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not aware that Twinkle is that sensitive to context; it most likely warns everyone the same at this point. If you prefer that a user is blocked, and therefore not forewarned, rather than maybe getting bored and going away, you could soft-pedal the reversion with "blogs not a RS", thus giving them more WP:ROPE.. What exactly is your intended strategy here?--Quisqualis (talk) 22:56, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how I could block a user. My strategy was to lower the chance that they disrupted the page again, by not reminding them of their edit. On Twinkle, there is one button that lets you revert all edits by a particular user, and another button that lets you revert to a previous revision, regardless of how many edits were made after that revision.—Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 23:19, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Automated user talk page warnings are configurable in Twinkle, but notifications, my understanding is that any type of rollback, including Twinkle and manual and Undo, will trigger a notification. You might have to trawl the documentation at WP:ECHO to find the details. Of course if you were to alter the page instead of rolling back, they might not get the notification. -- zzuuzz (talk) 23:25, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As a user who often wishes vandals had been warned sooner rather than later, I feel that the quiet manual revert would be counterproductive. --Quisqualis (talk) 00:26, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I can see when it could be useful, when a vandal has had final warnings, has already been reported and is still going - but that kind of high speed dedicated vandal is few and far between from what I've seen. --Paultalk14:15, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Designating a particular version of a photo

[edit]

Here is the original: , but I prefer the square version with less jacket and more Putin. This is the photo I want for an article, but it is #2 in the series of crops of the original (click photo in this post to see the crops). It's easy to designate the original, but what is the "name" for this version newly made by the WP:Image lab? It's not clear to me.--Quisqualis (talk) 22:46, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Quisqualis: It's not possible to display a former version of a file. You would have to upload it with a different name. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:59, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I was afraid of that. Thanks.--Quisqualis (talk) 23:07, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There's no need to crop and re-upload the image. You can just use the current Commons image cropped, as shown by examples at User:Maproom/cropping.   Maproom (talk) 23:47, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Maproom, but is that page complete?--Quisqualis (talk) 00:32, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No, not in any meaningful sense. It's just some examples, created for my own use, so that next time I want to display a cropped image on Wikipedia, I can figure out how to do it. (Wikipedia has some instructions somewhere, but I find copying code much easier than following instructions.) Maproom (talk) 08:00, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Kitch-iti-kipi

[edit]

I have updated information about the true Native American legend of Kitchitikipi. I am a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians and my family has lived near the Big Spring in the Upper Peninsula for centuries. The legend I have written down in my recently published book,"The Legend of Kitch-iti-kipi", has been passed down in my Ojibwe family for almost 200 years. My great great Aunt wrote down the legend told her by my great great great grandmother. I have rewritten and published that story in my book. The legends referred to on the Wikipedia page are made up, most of them by John Bellair, the local dime store owner in the early 1900s. How can I share what I believe is the true Ojibwe legend about Kitch-iti-kipi on Wikipedia? Clhare (talk) 22:47, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

One unpleasant fact about Wikipedia is that it is verifiable, but not necessarily true. We have numerous made-up birth dates for celebrities that have been widely circulated in the media. Nothing can be done here to "fix" it. In the case of your family's lore, publication in a Reliable source would be required. If the reliable source is connected to a Wikipedia editor, that editor may not make the addition of the lore, nor even request that it be added. Every thing added to Wikipedia must be from unconnected sources. I believe what you have said about the 5 and dime operator, though, and sincerely hope a RS and unconnected editor come along one day.--Quisqualis (talk) 23:04, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Clhare. I cannot find "The Legend of Kitch-iti-kipi" using a Google Books search. What company published the book and what is its ISBN number? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:58, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
