Guiana Space Center

Article(s): Guiana Space Centre

Request: Is it possible to make this graphics into the English language. Thanks. Hektor (talk) 10:49, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion: I've added the Template:Translation possible template to the Commons image page - if you know the English translations of the words, you can get the toolserver to translate them automatically into a new SVG that's labeled appropriately, see the template page for more on how it works. If you want, post the English translations here first so we can check that they make sense - small grammar changes and so on. —Vanderdeckenξφ 14:06, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

English version now exists here, but the English isn't perfect - Soyouz should be Soyuz, several words (e.g. montagne (mountain), top right) remain untranslated, and the text alignment seems to be weird - tilted. Maybe we need someone to tweak this manually. —Vanderdeckenξφ 18:29, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

SVG problem

Request: I've translated French version of this file, into Russian, so that our Graphic Lab could use it too. French file is only 214 kb, and this one turned out to be 1mb. Also there are severe problems with fonts and Russian letters. I've tried several times to save the new svg in different way (save with all glyphs for example), but the only thing it did was make it even bigger and worse. Could someone try fixing the fonts problem and the size of the file? Also please explain how did you do it. (I use Illustrator) --Ahnode (talk) 15:05, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion:

I'm afraid I can't tell what is wrong with your file, except for the size. I use Inkscape, but I have a few ideas. If you have problems with your fonts, Inkscape has a "Path->Convert Objects to Path" command that allows SVG to render 'non-standard' fonts. It may be that Cyrillic (excuse me if I spelled it wrong), or your specific font is one of the non-standard ones. You could try another font. If Illustrator is converting all the fonts to SVG path objects automatically, that would explain the size difference. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but I hope that at least explains the mystery. Dhatfield (talk) 03:27, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Does this -ru version use DejaVu (Sans or Serif) Condensed font ? The French graphist have recently discovert that this font work fine, while many other don't. Yug (talk) 20:04, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I opened your file in Inkscape, and cleaned up the def (Inkscape > File > Vaccum defs), which often enlight the file size, but this had no effects.
I copied the SVG content into a new page, then I got a 440Ko file (3time smaller), but not yet a 250Ko one, as espected.
So I guess there are 2 troubles:
1. Illustrator make the files heavier (1300Ko -> 440Ko);
2. other thing make the file still 200ko too big, what ? have you a clue ?
3. You have a well know font bug, French use the DejaVu (Sans or Serif) Condensed font to avoid this bug.
Re-do the translation, starting from the French file, and using Inkscape is probably the quickess way to success. Yug (talk) 20:23, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tokamak scheme

A relatively straightforward, but a very useful addition (IMO) would be an SVG scheme of a tokamak device. It could be based on one of the existing pictures...

The reason that I'm requesting this is that I've been cleaning inadequately labeled images on :sl Wikipedia and noticed this one. It's very informative, so I'd like to replace it in the article instead of just deleting. I can provide translation of the labels if necessary.

List of images

Since being with Wikipedia, I created a large collection of images by hand-drawing them. Can these be CGI'-ed (converted to computer images)?

The files include the following (my additional schematics besides those below can be seen at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:KVDP (click gallery)):

and a (heavily) simplified version of this file: http://img364.imageshack.us/img364/8475/scannen0001qv8.jpg Name should be Material recovering Waste Fired Power Plant the indicated items are 1: supply by ship, 2: dump hall, 3: waste bunker, 4: waste funnel, 5: ammonia injection against nitrogen oxides (NOx), 6: incineration kettle, 7: heat exchangers, 8: watercooled grids, 9: slag, 10: crane to switch heat exchangers, 11: electrostatic filter, 12: cloth filter, 13:reheater, 14: quench, 15: HCl-washer, 16: SO²-washer, 17: 100m high chimney, 18: fly-ash silo Note that i'd add also a subterrainean Carbon capture and storage pipe at the end Note that I did not upload the image at the site noted, if a new image is made in a simplified form, it can propbably be uploaded as a derivate or self-made image at wiki commons This image is for use with incineration and landfill mining article and is useful as it can give people around the world an idea on how they can eliminate their landfill sites.

A schematic of the waterpumping windmill described in NGC schould also be made and uploaded to wikimedia commons.

At present, I would firstly like to request the making of the following image: ForestCoverWorld.JPG

This image is to be created from the image found at Intactforests and the this thematic map from howstuffworks

Can someone please make a open-source copy from these maps and upload them to wiki commons, after which they can be displayed at the deforestation article. The image should be the IntactForests image layered over a pencil line marking the extremeties of the howstuffworks vegetation cover map. Note that it is perhaps best to move the intactforest coloring to the howstuffworks map, add the pencil line and delete the howstuffworks coloring

The area between the pencil line and the still currently present vegation, should be colored red; Vegetation (current) should be green.

Can someone also make an image of the Council House 2 ( http://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/info.cfm?top=171&pg=4123) See image at http://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/rsrc/PDFs/CH2/CH2_HowItWorks.pdf I haven't done it myself as I don't get how the downwards cold air supply works; is this done with fans ? Not clear in drawing. Also, perhaps someone can make a picture of an underground building version of Natural ventilation high-rise buildings.JPG .The center cone could be used as secondary escape route (in case of cave-in), balconies and vegetation should be removed and a air supply/elevator system be added in place of these.

A final image can be a modified image of

; where the the solar panel is cut off and where it is stated that the 2 pipes connect to a external (passive) source; eg a ground, water solar or air source; eg via heat pump, deep surface water (see also:

) or solar panel (see image above)—Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.182.172.175 (talk) 16:52, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The diagrams can be SVGed easily if your handwriting, etc. isn't important (IE. Replaced by a common fontface). Secondly, it appears you are requesting 2 different things: The conversion of those images, and the creation of a new one. I think it would be easier (and more likely to get done) if you separate the requests into 2 different ones. 76.117.247.55 (talk) 05:41, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You may change my handwritten text by mere computer text. Thanks. Note that at present, only the forest cover map should be done quickly, the others can be done as the image lab sees fit, and in order of its perception of the image importance.

The RAW "HowStuffWorks" map can be found here: http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/maps/pdf/WOR_THEM_Forests.pdf

Your images appear to be direct copies of copyrighted images, so I don't think you can release them public domain unless the author's version is public domain too. --Odie5533 (talk) 00:00, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Request: Could anyone help me by cutting off the top part of the map (just below Gibraltar) and putting the frame with explanations of the symbols etc. that is now in the upper right corner over the frame that is now in the lower left corner (excluding the title "Roman empire in 45 AD" and everything below the word Colchis). Graphist opinion: Hi S711, for me this is actually a fair amount of work, it is not a simple crop and move job, especially if it is to be left as an SVG. Unless another graphist wants to have a go at this, I'll try to get to it over the next week, but if others have any views for a speedy solution here, please chip in.--Goldsztajn (talk) 03:18, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great!!S711 (talk) 10:49, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that is a pretty horrible task due to the fact that everything is a vector outline, and nothing seems to be collected into complete outlines. Mfield (Oi!) 07:12, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The simplest/quickest way would be to move the legend, group all the map objects together and add a rectangle around the area needed then select both objects and do Object > Clip > Set. That will only hide the rest of the map though, it'll still be a massive file size-wise. So if the rest of the text really isn't needed then most of that could be deleted before clipping to the correct area. — ₪₪ ch1902 ₪₪ 10:32, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If it would make things easier only the names of the cities could remain and the legend could be left out altogether.S711 (talk) 11:41, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request: I would like to use the map from WDL or the original source in the above article. However I cannot find a way to get at the full map in high resolution. The 3MB tif at the WDL-site has too little resolution as has the jpg at the Brazilian library site (original source). Am I missing a link to the original hi-res source? If I zoom in with the zoom viewer I can save parts of the map (screensize) by just right-clicking and "save image as". However my screen is too small to fit the whole map in reasonable resolution. Maybe a Portuguese speaker can figure out the library site, or somebody with a big screen could help. Image of Wikia founders needed

Request:

Greetings, I'm looking for a decent-quality image of Wikia founders Jimmy Wales and Angela Beesley. The best I could find is File:Angela Jimbo Piotrus - Wikimania 2006.jpg, but that includes unnecessary detail and is rather grainy. If there are no superior alternatives, could someone see if they could improve this image? Thanks, Skomorokh 14:44, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion: Sorry there's been no reply to this. Could you not combine (or use next to each other) their official portraits? Request: Please make SVGs of these Army flags, which are all very similar in design. I linked to the Seal of the USA which is the hardest part, and is already an SVG. Correct shade of red can be taken from the flag(s) hosted on the Army's website: [3], [4], or [5]. - Gump Stump (talk) 16:49, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion: Did the best I can, however the dimension for the Vice Chief is somehow different, If exact info is given I will make it more accurate but here goes!:

PS the dimension of the CofS and the Sec, I did a round up of the US Presidential flag. Sodacan (talk) 07:16, 28 April, 2009 (UTC)

Those look very good. Although I can't find exact dimensions, it seems to me that the stars on the VCoS flag should be smaller, making the flag less crowded; in the images on the Army website I linked to (although they are tiny, I think I would trust them since the images are made and hosted by the Army) the stars appear about the same size as the round crest above the eagle's head. I also found this webpage which has a few more larger examples, if that helps with any of these. Thanks! - Gump Stump (talk) 16:02, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've made the stars smaller. The links you gave (I went through them too quickly), have all the flags at the same dimensions, do you think I you change the VCofS to correspond with the other two? it is the US Army website after all. Sodacan (talk) 17:45, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think I would make them the same dimensions; it is their website, I assume they know what they're doing. Thanks again. - Gump Stump (talk) 18:19, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First, if you are going to participate, do things right. It is obvious that your SVG is traced, and the nodes are incorrectly placed. Don't deny it as "Done is done". Also, the license is simply ridiculous by the fact that it is GFDL when it should be Public domain for ineligibility. And next time, upload at commons. Hi Ejly, you've loaded up a version which is basically just a LoC thumbnail created for cataloging purposes. However, here [6] is a much higher resolution version of the photograph. (Also, here is a 20 MB version [7].) Can I suggest you load the first version up (ie [8]) and then see if it suits your purposes. You can then come back here and ask us if you need any more help. Also, can I suggest you load the file up onto wiki commons, it is quite easy to do and to create an account there. Regards. --Goldsztajn (talk) 07:03, 22 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Response Thank you for your cordial reply. I uploaded a new image as directed to wikicommons [9] and also note there is a higher res TIFF [10] available but it will not display for me. I think it would work well if cropped to focus on the subject of the article, Ralph Lyford. Again, thanks for your assistance. ejly (talk) 00:38, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Great, thanks for doing the upload, I've placed the new image in the gallery above. I've then created a separate file for a headshot. I've also cropped the original photo and done some minor cleaning. The text on the photo indicates the woman in the photo is his wife, you may want to use the entire photo for the article rather than use the headshot...to me, it's actually a quite subtle and interesting photo of the couple and a nicer illustration. A good find.--Goldsztajn (talk) 01:47, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gray Mouse Lemur

Resolved

Article(s): Gray Mouse Lemur (not added yet -- awaiting photo clean-up)

Request: I plan to use the above image on the recently re-written Gray Mouse Lemur page. The author and I just took these photos, and this was the best we could get, given lighting conditions, cage size, and the animal's speed and sensitivity. Could someone please help me clean this photo up, possibly making it look similar to File:Katta Lemur catta.jpg? The image will need cropping/centering, and ideally blurring (and re-coloring?) of the background. Basically, I would like to have the bars removed, if possible. Resolved

Article(s): Commonwealth of Independent States

Request: SVG please--SelfQ (talk) 16:30, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion:I will do this! (not bitmap-traced, ok?). The only problem is that the cis flag and the cis emblem each have different color ball things. I will use the the color of the flag ball, since that is what I was instructed to do. :-)

The flag and the emblem have a slightly different "coat of arms". I just used the coat of arms on the flag. The end result is below. I accidentally uploaded it under an incorrect name, and I cannot move pages in commons, so I made File:Emblem of CIS.svg a commons redirect page.--Goldblattster (talk) 19:58, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could you use the more goldish yellow like in the emblem? (The source on the emblem is directly from the CIS website, the flag doesnt have a direct source so I think the more goldish yellow colour is the correct colour.) Also when you have made the correction, could you upload under the new name and tag the misspelled one for deletion? Thanks--SelfQ (talk) 20:12, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The SVG shouldn't be made by using trace bitmap. --Blacklemon67 (talk) 22:17, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That goes for almost all SVGs; it seems to be how a lot of people here make them. The "trace bitmap" function makes images very shoddy. --Pbroks13talk? 07:01, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Here is one I attempted vector. Not the best work, but may be worth it. ZooFari 07:23, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To the requester: Can you find (or write) what the text in the circle should be? It's almost impossible to tell what parts of it are actual text and what parts are JPEG compression artifacts since none of us can read the alphabet used. 76.117.247.55 (talk) 17:39, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Writing in the circle is "ترقيپرور جمهورية فرقةسي". It was written in Ottoman Language. Also the it is a spacious writing. So we shouldn't use the Ottoman writing. Also I enjoy the logo which was made by ZooFari. I think, it's very good.--Lord Leatherface (talk) 21:08, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And could you zoom the last circle to writing? The writing is a bit far from the circle.--Lord Leatherface (talk) 21:11, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I made more fixes. I fixed the alignment, removed unnecessary spots, and fixed the moon/star. How is that? ZooFari 02:20, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think you should add the spots. Because we don't know whether they are unnecessary. And I don't know Ottoman language and its grammar. Maybe the spots are necessary. So we should do that. If you do that, it'll be OK.--Lord Leatherface (talk) 13:26, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry, I only removed spots that were not even visible in the raster. These spots sometimes are created because of higher pigments due to artifacts. The spots you probably are worried about are the little circles next to the scribbling lines. Yeah, those probably should be there, so I didn't remove them. ZooFari 22:41, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, then. I thank everybody who has dealed with my request. It's OK.--Lord Leatherface (talk) 14:14, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

European Parliament - Ireland constituencies, 2009

Resolved

Article(s): North-West (European Parliament constituency), East (European Parliament constituency), South (European Parliament constituency), Dublin (European Parliament constituency), European Parliament election, 2009 (Ireland)

Request: For the 2009 European Parliament election in Ireland, some constituency boundaries have changed with moving of counties Longford and Westmeath from the East constituency to the North-West constituency. This means new images are needed for the above articles. The current ones were created by User:barryob and are GFDL. Barryob does not appear to be active at present. The current images like North-West (European Parliament constituency).svg should ideally be renamed as North-West (European Parliament constituency 2004-2009).svg versions for historical purposes. A new image needs to be created for the current boundaries, 1 with each constituency highlighted (North-West, East, South and Dublin). Also, a new image displaying all constituencies but without any of them highlighted is needed for the main 2009 Ireland European Parliament election page. An example of what the 2009 boundaries look like, is available here - [13] (Scroll down and the map is on the right), see also the maps in the Longford and Westmeath articles for county boundaries. Please note that the Northern Ireland European Parliament constituency is a UK constituency, and so it not part of the Ireland constituencies. The 2009 European Parliament election will be held on 4-7 June 2009, so it would be nice (thought not necessary, of course) to have the images by then. Thanks, Snappy (talk) 01:51, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How's that?--Goldsztajn (talk) 04:02, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I realise I may have done something slightly impolitic, depending on one's view, by colouring Northern Ireland grey...most of the EU election maps colour each of the constituencies of the island differently (see [14]). So apologies if I got this seriously wrong, suggestions changes welcome. --Goldsztajn (talk) 04:13, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's excellent! They look great. Thank you very much. In regards to Northern Ireland constituency, imho, what you did is correct. Snappy (talk) 06:10, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just one more thing. I'd like to request a separate version of File:Eire-European-Parliament-Constits-2009.svg with the constituencies labelled in English, like the 2004-2009 version here - File:IrelandEuroParlLabelled.png. Thanks, Snappy (talk) 00:22, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would rather not replace it with text that says WH 40K, so I was hoping that someone with some spare time could gin up something flashy, neutral and non-derivative (and make me lunch!...no, wait...:P ). A similar logo was made for the XBOX project when their old one ran afoul of copyright. I know this is a big request and I'm not sure this is the right place for it, but it is worth a shot. Here you go, a few options to choose from. The main design was taken from the front of the rulebook, as I am sure you can tell, however a circle with a skull on it is not copyrighted. The hammer behind the sheild was was first idea, but it might be pushing it as far as derivitive work goes. The third one just has the wiki W, so is nice and safe. Your choice.--23230 talk 11:05, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome! I think I'll get to work on replacing the first image with option 3. I like the Contrast of the W against the spikes. :) Protonk (talk) 16:18, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. The size of the image relative to the text makes {{Warhammer-40,000-stub}} and {{User WikiProject Warhammer 40,000}} render the text too small to decipher. You can see how well it works in {{Warhammer 40,000 Project}}. Maybe an alternate smaller image? Thanks for all this, by the way! Protonk (talk) 16:24, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about the late reply. Is this alright for the stub icon?

I agree that at this size the text was not really needed. I am glad you like the design!--23230 talk 16:42, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion: Sorry if this seems silly, but can you clarify, do you want a map or a flag of Australia with the football? Do you want a map or flag of New Zealand with the football? Was quite good but I felt levels needed some extra work on the lower right side. Sorry for kind-of stepping on your work - no offense intended. JaakobouChalk Talk 02:21, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No offense taken; but by pushing the levels this much and/or your cropping the delineation of the actual receipt itself is no longer visible. However, the requester can make a choice or ask for something different if not satisfied with this or my earlier version.--Goldsztajn (talk) 12:10, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is improved now, however if you can also improve it, it's worth a try. 76.117.247.55 (talk) 20:36, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good enough, anyway. 76.117.247.55 (talk) 21:13, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Crop SVG

Photo adjust

Articels: Power on self test

Request: Would it be possible to manipulate the images so they are more straight on, instead of looking up/down @ the monitors? Also, the bottom one is fuzzy @ the top. Can this be corrected? Thanx, 76.117.247.55 (talk) 01:20, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oppinion: I'll give this one a go. —Vanderdeckenξφ 12:38, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There, how's that? Quite a few perspective adjustments, and selective levels adjustments on the first one. It may be better for quality to run a virtual machine and take screenshots of its BIOS, or to put a hardware video capture box between the PC and the monitor, they're commonly used for recording video from games consoles. Only use a camera as a very last resort to get an image of a computer screen, as they photograph very badly (especially CRT monitors as opposed to TFT/LCD ones). If you must use a camera, set it for low light (maximum ISO), automatic white balance, high resolution and the furthest telephoto zoom you can get. If the longest telephoto is too long to fit the whole screen in, stand further back. Take the photo straight-on to the monitor, but if you must move, only move in one direction (vertically/horizontally). Don't tilt the camera, clean the monitor beforehand (to remove fingerprints and dust) and never, ever use the flash without a diffuser. —Vanderdeckenξφ 15:37, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
These were not my photograves. However, the improvements are excellent. 76.117.247.55 (talk) 21:12, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Brest, Belarus Flag/COA

Resolved

Article(s): Brest (Belarus)

Request: The flag is of terrible quality, and should be vectorized. If the flag is vectorized, please do the COA as well. Connormah (talk) 02:48, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

Done: traced COA, then added to flag. gringer (talk) 04:20, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good, but the flag should be white in the middle, not transparent, but I'll fix it myself. Thanks! Connormah 13:14, 25 May 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Connormah (talkcontribs)

George and Martha Washington Signatures

Image's request under progression Request taken by raeky.: I created that image some time ago for another project, will it work here? Find me a decent bitmap version of her sig and I'll convert it to SVG as well... — raeky (talk | edits) 02:14, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Vector'd from this source, will that work? The source wasn't that great so there isn't much detail left... — raeky (talk | edits) 05:11, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article(s): John Adams, Abigail Adams ......

Request: Please vectorize. Also, it'd help if you could give me your techniques so I can do more myself. Thanks. Connormah 23:39, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s):

To do the others I used the program InkScape which is open source, but you need a fairly decent input image to get any decent result. The linked images above are tiny and will not vector. So you'd have to search the internet to the clearest largest version of the signature you can find to use. If you can find some I'll do the conversions. — raeky (talk | edits) 00:46, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a bigger one of Jefferson's [16] and Adams'. I can't find a bigger one of Abigail's, can you work with that one? Connormah 01:19, 27 May 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Connormah (talkcontribs)
I did Adams', I'll try to do them, but I'd like someone to do Roosevelt, and the 2 external ones. Help on the ones not dine would also be appreciated. Connormah (talk) 02:28, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think Adams signature should be improved, it looks slightly different from the original Arteyu ? Blame it on me ! 07:37, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Which version are you talking about? Theres many reference images to his signature on the web, and of course each time someone signs their sig it's not exactly the same. The one I chose I think is fairly representitive, and there isn't many choices for ones high enough resolution to vector from.... — raeky (talk | edits) 07:40, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done Going to call this one done, all the requested signatures are linked. — raeky (talk | edits) 20:47, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

So, what did you use for these ones? Did you trace them manually in Inkscape? Connormah (talk) 00:12, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
These: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, Theodore Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson. They where auto-converted in InkScape using Trace Bitmap (Shift Alt B) — raeky (talk | edits) 01:13, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks for the tips. I have been working on others with the Live Trace in Illustrator. Thanks again, raeky! Connormah (talk) 03:38, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
