Golden Buddha
[edit]It looks like I left an ambiguous edit summary - when I said "remove gallery and link to commons cat" I meant I was removing the gallery and adding a link to the commons category. The article previously linked to the commons category for the Wat Traimit temple, but a more specific category exists for the statue itself, so I used that one instead. --McGeddon (talk) 08:24, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Cylinder of Nabonidus move
[edit]Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Cylinder of Nabonidus a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.
In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut-and-paste-move repair holding pen. Thank you. Kolbasz (talk) 20:31, 21 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you, Kolbasz. Sorry for my inexperience, but now the article has been moved and I'll try to improve it. All the best. Y-barton (talk) 03:13, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Copying
[edit]Generally you shouldnt copypaste text between articles the way you copied some of the text I wrote for the Champollion article to the one on Young - it creates potential copyright and plagiarism problems. Please see WP:Copying within Wikipedia.·maunus · snunɐɯ· 04:26, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hi, Maunus! I don't quite understand what you're saying. Please explain. As far as I know, there's no copyright on Wiki text. Y-barton (talk) 05:20, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
- Actually there is copyright on wikitext, but it simply requires attribution to the user who originally wrote it, and that is what is missing when you copy text from one article to another without noting in the edit summary that you copied it. You should read the link I supplied above to learn more about the specifics of copyright on wikipedia and how it affects copying between articles.·maunus · snunɐɯ· 05:29, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
- Great that you are working on Young btw. Robinson's 2006 biography is really recommendable as a source for that article.·maunus · snunɐɯ· 05:31, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
- Well, it's kinda hard to give credit to someone you don't know. Wiki articles are by definition anonymous, so when I copy from one Wiki article to another one (as is sometimes appropriate), most of the time I have no idea who wrote that particular passage that I’m copying.
- As far as Young article is concerned, I just performed some basic rescue on it. Clearly, nobody has updated that info since 1908! (Old Britannica article) :)
- It's amazing how that whole thing was politicized back then... It's all about “We the British did it best - anyhow!”. Sounded really like stone-age sort of politics... a trip into the past... :)
- Improving Champollion article is kind of hard, because it's already pretty good. But lots of related articles are really messy. I just did another rescue attempt on Writing in Ancient Egypt – that was pretty bad! Cheers, Y-barton (talk) 01:51, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Y-baton, thanks for your contributions to Chinese archaeology articles, such as Yueshi culture! This subject badly needs contributors like you. Zanhe (talk) 07:45, 4 June 2015 (UTC) |
- I've expanded the article a bit, and I think it's nearly ready for DYK. However, there are a few unsourced paragraphs, do you happen to have sources handy for them? If not, we should probably remove them. There's plenty of other material to add from existing sources. Cheers! -Zanhe (talk) 07:49, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you Zanhe! I'll try to add some refs as soon as possible. All the info I've put into the article is based on good sources. I'm definitely interested in expanding Wiki coverage in this general area. I'm particularly interested in the Xia dynasty, and in clarifying the Erlitou culture connection. All the best. DYK for Yueshi culture
[edit]On 2 July 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Yueshi culture, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that many scholars identify the archaeological Yueshi culture with the Eastern Barbarians mentioned in ancient documents, but others disagree? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Yueshi culture. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

- Thank you, Coralapus, and I agree with what you wrote. Good to know it's a minority view! :) So it's all the more surprising that Lönnqvist's problematic material was sitting there already for years, before I got to it!
- I did some digging in article history to see that this matter was actively promoted back in 2011. For example, here (26 April 2011). Thus, some of this new material that you offer now already was in the article. Then it was removed. So there were some disputes going on back then.
- But, regardless, the task now is to improve the article further and to add some of this material again. Shouldn't be so hard... Y-barton (talk) 19:33, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 14:11, 3 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for the reminder, Diannaa. I did mention in my edit summary in Tudhaliya III article that I copied text from another article into it, but I guess it was incomplete. And now I also left a mention at Talk:Hayasa-Azzi that I copied some of the text from Hayasa-Azzi into the Tudhaliya III article. Best regards. Y-barton (talk) 17:48, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

[edit]An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Saliagos, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Macedonia.

- Fixed. Y-barton (talk) 12:32, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
When citing a 20 page article, you need to give a page number(s). It is much better if you also don't repeat the whole citation (minus the useful bit) every time. Just do as the other repeated refs do, & have that once in the lower section, with individual refs as eg "Bonney, 96". Thanks. Johnbod (talk) 02:52, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your comments. I have improved the quotation accordingly. Y-barton (talk) 12:06, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
Questionable additions to Kothar-wa-Khasis
[edit]As far as I am aware, the view that Ilish was not a carpenter deity is the consensus today, and it has been this way at least since the 2000s. Your only source on the contrary is a book from 1992 (2022 is the date of a reprint's publication only...), written by someone who is not an expert on Ugarit - hardly "modern" and hardly "experts" (plural). Additionally, no Ugaritic text portrays Kotharat as "attendants" (let alone wives!) of Kothar; Dennis Pardee outright stressed in multiple publications (ex. here) as early as in the 1990s there's no relation other than cognate names between the deities. I really recommend starting the study of Ugarit with authorities in the field, not with random classicists. HaniwaEnthusiast (talk) 16:38, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your concerns. I may only add in my defense that the fact that the book is reprinted again in 2022 should indicate that it’s still popular among scholars. I will address these matters further on the article talk page soon. Ugarit is my old favorite from many years ago.
- P.S. Dear HaniwaEnthusiast, the information you indicated is not quite correct. Please see the following info from Google Books,
- Daidalos and the Origins of Greek Art. Sarah P. Morris - Art - 1992 - 411 pages
- Daidalos and the Origins of Greek Art. Sarah P. Morris. Princeton University Press, Feb 8, 2022 - Social Science - 483 pages
- Thus, the book was not a reprint. Looks like it's an updated and expanded edition. Good regards, Y-barton (talk) 12:54, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

Invitation to join New pages patrol
[edit]Hello Y-barton!
- The New Pages Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
- We think that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting.
- Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
- Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
- If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.
Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

- Thank you for the invitation. I understand how important this work is for filtering out bad contributions, and for encouraging new users to improve. Almost all my edits recently have been in archaeology and ancient history, so I would like to help in these areas primarily. Yet I need some time to think it over because I anticipate being a little busy in the next few weeks with some scheduled stuff. But I’ll come back to this issue soon. Tartessos
[edit]I've taken it to the talk page of wikiproject archaology asking if it needs to be cleaned up to removed media sources. I think we do, without a peer reviewed paper we don't know if the claims have been verified. Doug Weller talk 14:47, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- I can fix that item with the proper ref, if this is what is needed. Y-barton (talk) 17:34, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
