Taking a photograph of a Banksy work?
Hi there. Apologies for reaching out to you out of the blue but I noticed you are the only WP Bristol member who was active today. I read about this work of street art today that appeared in a Bristol neighborhood and it would be good to have a picture of it for our Banksy article but from the looks of it, it might be short-lived, especially with those leaves if it rains or there is a storm. If you are interested, maybe you could take a picture or know someone who could take one? No pressure, I just wanted to ask. Regards SoWhy 11:37, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message
The file File:WGGRACEMURAL.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Orphaned image, use File:WGGRACEMURALDOWNEND.jpg instead.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --TheImaCow (talk) 19:33, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

Can you please not alert me of a PROD or article deletion again, I barely visit this site nowadays let alone have time to waste on trying to save articles that deletionists have made up their mind aren't notable anyway. Thankyou.† Encyclopædius 16:57, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

Supreme Court recent case regarding sexual orientation discrimination and the civil rights act.
Sorry I am a newer user while I understand now citations shouldn’t be used on a Wikipedia page about another Wikipedia page I did so only so users could have a quicker link so they could read about the SCOTUS ruling. Also, I am confused why you dismissed my addition about discrimination of sexual orientation. The court had clearly stated that it is illegal to discriminate against a person based off their sexual orientation due to the civil rights act. Albert257 (talk) 01:41, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

Wrongfully sent message about a change in the Peninsulan War page
Hello, I just noticed that I had a new message stating:
Hello, I'm William Avery. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Peninsular War, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at the tutorial on citing sources. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you.
I assume this is the change you were talking about. However, I personally have not made any changes in any Wikipedia article yet, this one not being an exception. It is quite strange that it came from my IP but that was definitely not me. Anyway, I just wanted to make sure that this was not a first step for being banned from reading any wikipedia pages or anything of the sort. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.169.228.18 (talk) 23:54, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

IPNI and PoWO ids
Hi, I seem to recall there was some opposition to including both IPNI and PoWO IDs in Wikidata taxon items and hence in taxonbars, on the grounds that they were the same ID. So I thought you might possibly be interested in a recent example of when they are different, which justifies the use of both. Initially, both IPNI and PoWO used 77067552-1 for Calycanthus chinensis, but with slightly different authorities. I pointed out to IPNI that PoWO appeared to be right, and IPNI wrong. This was agreed, so now a new entry with ID 77214976-1 has appeared in IPNI with the correct authority, but this currently corresponds to the original 77067552-1 in PoWO. PoWO is not being updated at present, because of Covid furloughs, so I don't know whether its ID will eventually change or not. Anyway, right now the two databases have different IDs for the same taxon name authority combination. Peter coxhead (talk) 11:34, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for this. I have been known to send corrections to IPNI. The last one was a typo/lapsus fixed on 14th Jan, and the key was unchanged. ("Specklinia quinqueseta" was spelt "Specklinia quinquesta".) William Avery (talk) 12:25, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Saline article
Saline article. Hello, I originally described the change but it apparently was missed. Sodium is a highly reactive Group 1 metal, and is NOT a drug of any type. The article may have meant to say sodium chloride solution of 0.9 % "normal" saline is a top-seller drug.
Craig Scott — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.249.23.2 (talk) 19:03, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- When one refers to 'sodium' in a medical context, it doesn't mean elemental metallic sodium. William Avery (talk) 19:07, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
Neither is "sodium" used by itself in medicine, as it is both inaccurate and ambiguous as to what is meant. I administer many types of drugs which contain sodium, but none of us in the medical field would ever use "sodium" by itself. And that "sodium" is a highly prescribed medicine means nothing but that the author knows not of that of which he writes, nor does the reader know what is really meant by the author. So, does it mean that all drugs containing sodium combined are highly prescribed, or that as the article is about saline solutions that the "sodium" highly prescribed are solutions of saline, or maybe just 0.9 % "normal" saline?
So, do we need to take this to a dispute process? I see so many errors and inaccuracies in various Wikipedia articles and found this one so in error I felt compelled to address it.

Possible JS environment problem?
Hi there.
Is it possible this bot uses the extension moz-extension://30b9c837-bee1-47b7-a6c6-b8329ef4049c/ when it executes? If so, I believe this extension needs removing or updating. I am seeing around 606 errors in our production logs per day. I don't know the name of this extension but if you put that URL in the address bar it should become apparent. I can provide error logs if fixes are needed, but from the look of it it appears to be replacing jQuery with an incompatible version.
Let me know how I can help! Jon (WMF) (talk) 15:54, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry. I have Tampermonkey enabled. I sometimes use it for local userscript development, or to run a quick regex against pages. I haven't kept the jQuery version in line with MediaWiki. William Avery (talk) 16:06, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- After a little testing I find that some site functionality, such as pop-out images, that wasn't working when I had Tampermonkey enabled, does work when I disable it, and continues to work when I activate GreaseMonkey. I will go back to using the latter, as I only became enamoured of the former when it briefly worked on FF Mobile. William Avery (talk) 20:19, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- I've changed my userscript to set local aliases for the libraries in the browser window, rather than loading its own version. i.e
const JQuery=unsafeWindow.jQuery
const $=jQuery
Agromyces Automatic Taxobox
Do you mind updating the automatic taxobox for Agromyces to have Micrococcales as the parent taxon for Micrococcaceae? I've yet to take the plunge into automatic taxoboxes. (And if you're feeling really ambitious, the subclasses and suborders of Actinobacteria are deprecated, now, so they should be removed from all actinobacterial automatic taxoboxes.) Request for Assistance
Hello there!
Thanks for your recent work on Ribes aciculare, a page that I recently created. I'm planning to expand this article and add a couple of other Ribes pages over the coming weeks. I'm not sure I'm using the best "taxobox", though. I've looked around (including at other pages on Ribes species and other plant species), and see that other taxoboxes are available. If you have a couple of minutes to spare, please would you point me in the direction of the "taxobox"/"speciesbox" that you think would best suit this and similar articles. In particular, if you could direct me to some instructions on how to use the {speciesbox} alternative that would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide. RomanSpa (talk) 14:59, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @RomanSpa:
- Thanks for asking about this. There is an introduction at Wikipedia:Automated taxobox system/intro. Clicking on the red pencil icon on an automated taxobox with take you to the underlying taxonomy tree. Rubus nivalis is a good example of an article with a speciesbox that shows the subgenus in the taxonomy, if you are intending to do that.
- I should also mention that @Plantdrew: is probably the leading practitioner in the use of plant taxoboxes. William Avery (talk) 08:58, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, @William Avery:
- Thank you for your helpful response! RomanSpa (talk) 09:07, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

Fishes, especially Gobies
Hello from the gloaming of a Scottish Spring afternoon. I have just reverted some edits you made to taxonomy templates of goby genera. I did so because WikiProject Fishes does not follow FishBase for taxonomic levels above that of the genus, the authority for those higher taxa is the 5th edition of Fishes of the World. This was set out in these templates. As I understand it, the FishBase citation is to show the genus is recognised in that database and the parents reference is to show that the parent has been sourced too. I hope you understand my reasoning. Quetzal1964 (talk) 18:05, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

More taxonbar questions (sorry)
Hello William,
Thanks for adding taxonbars to some of my recent edits. Two questions though: How can I get the taxonbars to show eg. on Lasiopetalum trichanthera, Lasiopetalum venustum and Lasiopetalum × tepperi? Is there something that needs to be done in Wikidata or am I just impatient? (I hope you dendrobiums are doing well too!) Gderrin (talk) 09:29, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Gderrin: No problem: L. venustum and L. × tepperi seem to have righted themselves. I added the FloraBase ID to L. trichanthera, so there is an ID for the taxonbar to display, and that seems OK now. William Avery (talk) 10:43, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks William - I must learn to be more patient! You are a Wikidata wiz. Gderrin (talk) 10:48, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
Question
Hi. I would like to help convert some taxobox templates to speciesbox templates using. However, I am unsure where to find the information on clades necessary to create the template for the speciesbox. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks. Scorpions13256 (talk) 14:25, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Scorpions13256: I generally use the same sources that the articles do, which are usually consistent among a group of articles. If there appears to be inconsistency, it may be wise to steer clear, unless you are confident of how to implement a consistent scheme. (It is possible to implement inconsistent schemes, but that is not really an improvement). Among the existing insect articles, the manual taxoboxes often omit a tribe, but there may a tribe classification lurking in the category tree (frequently unreferenced). Some projects have guidelines about the taxonomic scheme to be used, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Fishes § Taxonomy. There is a general problem that compilers of works with a clear limited scope may use detailed up-to-date classification (Pohl's Checklist of Moths and Butterflies of Canada and Alaska has reduced Arctiidae to a subfamily of Erebidae, for instance, and includes subfamilies, tribes and subtribes), but more comprehensive works are often more conservative and only use main taxonomic levels, with no levels between family and genus. (e.g. GBIF, but I notice even GBIF classifies tiger moths as Erebidae now). Lastly, https://ftp.funet.fi/pub/sci/bio/life/ is much used, but not a reliable source. William Avery (talk) 08:02, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you. Also, where on my screen does your taxoboxalyzer tool appear when I try to convert taxoboxes to speciesboxes? Does it appear in a corner, or do I have to hit a button to make it appear? I am using a Mac. Scorpions13256 (talk) 23:25, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Scorpions13256: You need to be using the desktop view (as opposed to mobile) and then, if you are on a page with a manual taxobox, you should see an item labelled "Taxoboxalyzer" in the menu on the right-hand side of the page, under "Tools". William Avery (talk) 14:32, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks. I figured it out. I was confused because it is actually on the left side for me. It's a cool tool. Scorpions13256 (talk) 22:30, 3 March 2021 (UTC)

Invitation to join the Fifteen Year Society
Dear William Avery/Archive 13,
I'd like to extend a cordial invitation to you to join the Fifteen Year Society, an informal group for editors who've been participating in the Wikipedia project for fifteen years or more.
Best regards, Urhixidur (talk) 16:46, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Redundant Wikipedia links on synonym Wikidata items
Hi William Avery, could you please stop your bot from making edits like this one? The link to the Wikipedia page is supposed to be on the item of the valid name, and it already is. Thanks! --LamBoet (talk) 19:20, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
- I'll take a look. I'm not sure why it would be doing that if the article is already linked. William Avery (talk) 19:27, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
- Ah yes! Sorry. I recently converted the bot from node.js to python, and it seems I dropped a check on whether the article is already linked. That check would have stopped the particular edit you saw. I will stop the python version of the bot until I have put that check in. It sounds like I should also be checking that I'm not linking to a protonym, when I should be linking to a valid name. William Avery (talk) 20:12, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
- OK, thank you! --LamBoet (talk) 21:12, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
- Re linking: the problem is that because of the well discussed issues in Wikidata's handling of taxon/taxon name items, you need to link to whichever name currently has all or most of the links, regardless of whether this is the name used in any particular language wikipedia, or whether it's an accepted name in current reliable sources. The real answer is for Wikidata and/or the Wikimedia software to handle language links from declared synonyms, but I don't see that happening. Peter coxhead (talk) 05:41, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

- It turns out this malfunction was down to a documented incident on Wikidata rather than anything wrong with the bot. William Avery (talk) 12:39, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
- Interesting. So, does this mean that under normal circumstances, even a bot wouldn't be able to create a duplicate site link? (I am not familiar with the technical side.) --LamBoet (talk) 20:25, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
- That is my understanding, though at the best of times, I feel I'm never quite sure about Wikidata. William Avery (talk) 07:31, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
- And my understanding too. It is, in my view, a serious design flaw in Wikidata that it insists on a 1:1 relationship between Wikidata items and wiki articles, although this is simply not the case in the real world. It means, for example, that it's impossible to capture correctly the relationships between articles when one language Wikipedia always has only one article for a monospecific genus, covering both the genus and the species, and another always has one for the genus and one for the sole species. Peter coxhead (talk) 17:58, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
- A disease and the pathogen that causes it is another common, and mildly topical, form of mismatch. William Avery (talk) 18:15, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, indeed, I often have the problem with the monospecific genus and its species: in such a case, the English Wikipedia only has the article about the genus, and the French Wikipedia only has the article about the species. There is a workaround though: you can add the species redirect or genus redirect to their respective Wikidata item, if you 1) remove the #redirect command 2) add the link in the item 3) put back the #redirect. But while this trick makes your Wikipedia's article accessible from those of all other WPs, the reverse is not true. --LamBoet (talk) 18:07, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
- @LamBoet: also eventually a Wikidata editor will notice there's a link to a redirect, and "fix" it. Peter coxhead (talk) 16:51, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
- That's a risk, indeed. I still hope that the redirect policy will evolve. --LamBoet (talk) 04:28, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

Taxonbar stuff
Hello William Avery,
Before I start my whinge, I should acknowledge the many corrections you have made to taxonbar mistakes I've made (there'd be dozens!) in plant articles I've started. Much appreciated - thank you. The whinge: I don't think it's appropriate to add synonyms to taxonbars as you've done at Pultenaea retusa. If synonyms were included in the taxonbars of all plant articles, the taxon identifiers would occupy more line-space than the articles themselves. Gderrin (talk) 22:11, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
- By all means remove the QIDs for varieties. I've no great attachment to them... and thanks for asking. William Avery (talk) 22:17, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
- Many thanks for your pics of Dendrobium kingianum, BTW. I have one struggling away on my study windowsill. William Avery (talk) 22:53, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks - best wishes to you (and your orchids). Gderrin (talk) 23:15, 24 August 2021 (UTC)

If you come across any authorities identified only by surname (especially before early C20) who you can't track down, please get in touch. It's a hobby of mine; I think I've only failed once. (I came across Richard Brinsley Hinds because there was a {{dn}} tag on a link to the DAB page Hinds. DYK for Deretaphrus
On 21 August 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Deretaphrus, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that it is not known whether larvae of Deretaphrus beetles spin their cocoons from their mouths or anal glands? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Deretaphrus. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Deretaphrus), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Minor bug in rejected draft images bot report, uploads-link
Hello William Avery,
Thank you for making the rejected draft images bot report, it has been very useful.
I noticed a minor bug in the report: user uploads -link does not escape special characters in user name properly. On https://heber.toolforge.org/drafts/filter/20211007 there is user:B&BStudio1, but the uploads link is malformed: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/&user=B&BStudio1&ilshowall=1, instead of https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/B&BStudio1&ilshowall=1. Wikidata linking
Hi. I appreciate your efficiency in finding and linking Wikidata, but a recent issue prompts me to ask: how much do you know about creating or deleting Wikidata items? I ask because in several cases - including the Anoplophora you linked today - Wikidata has links for misspellings in addition to the correct spellings, and sometimes the ONLY item in Wikidata is a misspelling (e.g., there is no link in Wikidata for Phytoecia rebeccae, but instead for the misspelling "rebbeccae". It would be great to know how to fix some of these issues at their root; after all, in Wikipedia, one can configure a misspelling to be a redirect to the correct spelling. I find it hard to imagine that Wikidata would not allow for a similar functionality. Thanks, Dyanega (talk) 16:06, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for your kind words. I try not to tread on people's toes while they are creating articles if I can help it.
- Misspellings are regrettably common in Wikidata, because names tend to be copied over from source databases (such as GBIF) en masse, by non-experts, like myself. In the case of P. rebeccae it seems a Wikidata item with the wrong name was created to match the original Wikipedia article. On Wikidata I have created Phytoecia rebeccae (Q113458343) and changed Phytoecia rebbeccae (Q30323087) to be an instance of misspelling (Q1984758) of (P642) Phytoecia rebeccae (Q113458343). If the misspelling was confined to Wikipedia, I might have just changed the spelling on the Wikidata item, but it has a BioLib taxon ID (P838) for the wrong spelling, so people may as well be warned.
- You can query all the misspellings in Wikidata. like this.
- Requests for deletion of items can be filed at d:WD:RFD.
- There is d:Wikidata talk:WikiProject Taxonomy, but I can understand people not wanting to get involved. William Avery (talk) 13:51, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'll try to take a closer look at how this works. Appreciate the tips. Dyanega (talk) 15:36, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
- Just came across a problem case, maybe you know what to do - the genus Adamas (sawfly) has a wikidata link, but that link displays a homonnymous fish genus name in ITIS. That ITIS entry is bad, and should not appear connected to "Adamas Malaise" in Wikidata. Ideas? Thanks, Dyanega (talk) 21:13, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
- I moved the ITIS id from Adamas (Q21358925) to the fish genus Adamas (Q26589201) and changed the fish genus to an instance of "later homonym". William Avery (talk) 10:39, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Taxoboxalyzer and subgenus
Hi, I made a fix for your edit at Elachista atricomella. Taxoboxalyzer does not deal correctly with manual species taxoboxes that contain a subgenus parameter. Maybe you know that the correct approach using {{Speciesbox}} uses |parent=
which then needs a taxonomy template to exist for the subgenus. Peter coxhead (talk) 15:37, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Laevicordia abscissa
Hello William Avery, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Laevicordia abscissa, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Author has not requested deletion, or other users have added substantial content. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 16:27, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
- I declined deletion because you are not the redirect's creator, and the speedy deletion criteria are meant to be interpreted very literally. For redirects that are unambiguous errors, you can use WP:R3 or tag with {{db-r3}}. This one appears to me to be correct, though, and it's a valid redirect as far as I can tell. If an article could be written here instead you can add {{R with possibilities}}, or you can just replace the redirect code and write the article yourself. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 16:31, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
- My mistake. I misremembered. I will mark it as having possibilities. William Avery (talk) 16:38, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of White-browed shrike-babbler (disambiguation)
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on White-browed shrike-babbler (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either
- disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
- disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
- is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
