==The site TITUS have some old texts of old languages not available elsewhere, e.g. the Khotanese language, there is no elsewhere site give the samples==Gaia2767spm 23:54, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are sample texts in TITUS project. The wikipedia page do not have a text sample and TITUS project has. There are links of glossaries that helps readers. For the less known languages, isn't the samples and the glossaries useful?Gaia2767spm 00:28, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some materials are copyrighted and external links needed. People have bias, perhaps u r right that TITUS and the Indo-european database may not be valuable to the pages. But there is to contribute and no mean to spam,Gaia2767spm 01:07, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A double revert by u may be needed for u r point. 1. For a language, relevant sample texts are helpful for readers to know more about the language. So are now in external links of many other languages wikipages. 2. For a modern language, an external link of radio would be better examples, so TITUS may not be relevant. For old languages, the readers may want to know more, e.g. for big structure and word list, the external links supports wikipedia pages, for reasons of copyright, completion of ideas and limitation in size of wikipedia pages, the less important information may be links for further reading of the readers. 3. The TITUS and the The Indo-European Database have been suggested by contributors earlier, e.g. in pages Proto-Indo-European language&Lydian language, so there should be some value in that.Gaia2767spm 10:48, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If u sure u r points are right, and is better for the readers, then any revert would ok.Gaia2767spm 11:00, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Know what is spamming as user:Gareth Hughes told. Sorry for adding too many links from the same site to the pages.Gaia2767spm 15:52, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

== Pandyas ==

[edit]

Parthi, While the Chola history has been covered in great detail, thanks to you and others, I feel the Pandyan history could use some time and effort. Esp., the Sangam age and the second empire (12th-13th century). I started working on the early pandyas few days back - along the lines of the Chola articles. It's still under development, but I think the article would need some expert involvement, given the importance. So, please look through it when you have time and comment. Thanks Lotlil 14:44, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have written the society section in my sandbox that I will be scrubbing and adding references to, before creating an article for it. Please also review it and edit, as you see fit. Thanks! Lotlil 17:30, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Parthi, I started writing the sandbox article intending to make it a side-article for the main article Early Pandyan Kingdom. I've been using material from books or sections that deal with Pandyas. If you would like to expand it into Ancient Tamil Society, we can work on that too, I dont think it will be too different. We will have more sources to quote from. In any case, let me know once you get a chance to go through the main article. I will work on adding references to my sandbox in the mean time . Lotlil 23:41, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Carnatic Music: Multiple Trinities

[edit]

Venu

This is regarding the Carnatic Music article. I inserted a para in the composers section stating that there are historically different sets of composers designated as Trinity and did not delete the section on the Thayagaraja-Muthuswami-Shyama trinity. However I find that a user called Gnanapiti keeps reverting the edit calling it false history. I actually even cited the book by U.V.Saminatha Iyer called "Sangeetha Mummanikal" where he lists Kanam Krishna Iyer, Gopalakrishna Bharathi and another composer as the Mummanikal. There have been about three cycles of edit-reversal within the past few hours. How does one go about this now?

Thanks. Chandrasekaran.

Venu

Thanks for your reply. However is there not a Wiki process to arbitrate or even lock the page in these situations?

Just delete the image if ther eis a problem I bleeived it was PD-old -so public domain ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 10:06, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Retrieving a source from another site providing it is PD old qualifies as fair use. If the image itself is in the public domain -e.g produced before 1947 I think it is in India then it is a free image. Do you have any reason to beleive it is recent? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 10:24, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah I see thanks -but please do not tell me what to do. I beleive then it still qualifies as fair use but if you object to the image for a personal reason then feel free to delete - note though you speedied the image yet the tag was on it for many hours and it still wasn't deleted. the wiki deleter obviuosly wasn't convinced about it ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 10:35, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thats the best thing to do is to peer review. Personally I have no objection if you want to delete it but I thought it was an asset and improvment to the article thats all. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 11:05, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I was just curious what about the copyright status of this image which is used all over the place? No, I'm not going to tag that image. Because I don't believe in editing in bad faith. Gnanapiti 02:54, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't answer about the status of above mentioned image. Are you going to tag that image too? Gnanapiti 03:07, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is exactly what I call editing in bad faith. As I already said, I'm not going to tag that image. As long as due credit is given to copyright holder and the image is informative, I don't have any problems with images. I don't believe in disruptive editing unlike you. On your comments on my edits on cholas:Pls be careful about your vocabulary

[edit]

Dear Mr.Venu , I have read your comments about my contributions on chola history.

I'd like to make the following observations. i like to say that your opinions on imperial cholas and pallavas have sidestepped a few facts. The rule of pallavas and cholas ended effectively 800 years ago. After that there were invasions all of them if not totally destructive it is possible that quite a lot of material and documentation could have been lost.

It is also possible that QUITE A FEW OF inscriptions and copperplate grants could have been doctored, forged and written at a later date to suit the rule of succeeding dynasties. This if not anything else points to the corruption which was gradually taking roots during the period and eroding the culture. so beautifully explained by some eulogists in their grants as excessive wickedness of age of kali.

Like wise i'd like here to contest the well accepted fact that one of the daughters of Raja Raja and Rajendra married "eastern chalukyan" kings. My rejection of this is based on two things. The first one is that some inscriptions of Raja Raja published by ASI in 1990 say that he conquered among other countries the country called vengi in andhra supposed to be the kingdom of a branch of chalukyas. Given this invasion it is very unlikely that Raja Raja who was known as much for his intelligence as for his military prowess would have gone in for a matrimonial relationship with them of all. I like to observe here that we are trying to explore truth and not trying to write scripts for a movie or a potboiler where the so called central figure accepts and corrects a prodigal and agrees for a relation ship with him.Inscriptions of Rajendra also mention Vengi as a tributary kingdom.

The reason for my doubt is based on common sense. It has accepted widely that kulothunga came to throne in 1070 after the death of athi rajendra chola the last prince of male descendants line of vijayalaya. This kulottunga is a scion of chola clan from a collateral lineage, a cousin of Athi Rajendra. The most popular and widely accepted view is that he is a descendent of a vassal chalukya family. This however seems very improbable and raises some questions. The Cholas took throne names Rajakesarin and Parakesarin alternatively in the order of their coronation. This is probably to acknowledge their descent from kings with those names who lived many centuries ago. We see one of these titles in kulottunga’s inscriptions. It is difficult to believe that an impostor pretending to be a chola scion could have ruled for such a long period and even left heirs to the throne. In accordance with the tradition followed, it would not have been possible for a person who has descended even partly from some one who does not belong to the clan of cholas( As is supposed in case of kulottunga chola), to be entitled the legacy of coronation ceremony precursor to kinship, in those places like pazhayarai, seingaloor, karoor, uraiyur and Chidambaram which for centuries from times immemorial hosted the coronation ceremonies of chola princes. To increase the complexity of the situation, we also know from one of unpublished inscriptions of Chidambaram temple that, KULOTTUNGA WAS ALSO A TITLE TAKEN BY ILLUSTRIOUS RAJENDRA CHOLA 1.

But How is it possible that a person(kulothunga) whose identity was never clear before, a person not used to creating or taking charge of such a huge empire, a person whose country saw a lot of wars be accepted and trusted by common courtiers let alone by the powerful commanders of chola military and especially the illustrious pallava chiefs of kancheepuram would have utilized the disagreements arising out of such a scenario to spur a pallava revival. I can accept the fact that after 1190 the empire started to decline slowly. My reasoning that due to chola colonization of south east asia some prices might have sought to go there to support the army and after sometime would have chosen not to come back. As a result of this there might have been a partial anarchy gradually developing into weakness. This question may be answered some time and i believe it will be.

Like the well known journalist Mark Tully once said in a conference, if hypocrisy is a British disease then envy is Asian. I have to say that i accept his proposition.

Finally be a bit careful about your vocabulary, for i need not waste my time on internet editing pages, IF ALL I KNOW IS JUST NONSENSE. By using such words freely , you will only be making enemies out of people . If you have anything to say, you can write back tome at: [email protected] and also call me@09871026217(India). I LIKE TO PUT IT ACROSS THAT I STRONGLY BACK MYSELF FOR MY VIEWS ON THE SUBJECT AND SHALL BE SO FOREVER. Greets!

Fair use rationale for Image:Ottosoglow littleking.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Ottosoglow littleking.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Hello

[edit]

Hi Venu, Highly impressed with your work on Wikipedia. How do you keep in touch with Indian history while staying in Australia? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sriharsha wiki (talkcontribs) 04:45, August 23, 2007 (UTC).

Urgent: India page

[edit]

Hi Venu62, Since you are one of the people who made substantial comments in the last RfC we had on the Talk:India page concerning addition of new material (see here), I thought I would get your opinion about a new development. Yesterday, out of the blue, Blnguyen, who has no history of editing on the India page, made a post on the page suggesting that the India page be expanded to twice its size, which needless to say, has created a lot of confusion. Please see this section of the talk page there. As a result, User:Sarvagnya, for example, has returned to his scheme for de-constructing the India page. (By way of background: Nichalp, who usually watched over the article is busy this summer; Ragib, who was subbing for Nichalp is busy too. Blnguyen seems to think that the page is in bad shape and is about to be de-FA'd. He feels that it needs many more citations (and their lack) is reason enough for it to fail an FAR. Nichalp, when he was active, discouraged over-crowding the text with too many citations (especially when the text was composed in the summary-style, as India is). I think Blnguyen has some valid points: the page needs more (and certainly better) citations and the prose (especially of some new sections that were created by other people) needs revamping, but I think you might be in a better position to assess Blnguyen's idea of expanding the article to twice its size.) Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 12:05, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Parthi, I wanted to nominate this article for GA status. You had mentioned some prose issues in your last comment on the peer review and there has been some cpediting on the article since then. Just wanted to get your opinion on moving it to GAC. Lotlil 01:13, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On chola history!

[edit]

Dear Mr. Venu, Pls kindly stop writing on history of cholas. That is seemingly not your area of expertise. Your writings about some of the rulers makes me laugh and cry at the same time. The reason why a vast majority of research community feels that internet is not at all a reliable source of information is that people just go about filling webpages on subjects according their whims and fancies. why do not you write things about other minor dynasties like vijayanagaram and chalukyas? Greets! K.Sethumadhavan —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vyaghradhataki (talkcontribs) 06:00, August 26, 2007 (UTC)

Parthi, I've left a request with the three users you mentioned for cpediting the article. I will skip the GA part and just go to FAC when it's ready. If you get some time in the meanwhile, please suggest anything that needs to be addressed (for one: the map looks a bit amateurish, but I'm just going to leave it that way for now). BTW, I was looking at the Thirukkural article recently, it needs to be made much better than what it is now, given the importance of the subject. Later. Lotlil 13:34, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A relief that you are back

[edit]

Having considered several times whether to leave you a comment regarding the repeated deletion of material that you'd originally put into the article, I decided not to given your absence from Wikipedia. Although we have had our differences, especially in these areas in Carnatic music, I was relieved to see that you are back - hopefully to bring anything else you have on the topic. I was wondering if you had any other verifiable/reliable references that may be relevant (to this part of the article that they keep trying to delete)? "Bangalore "vs "Bengaluru", again

[edit]

The article on Bangalore has yet again been moved to "Bengaluru". That move was done hastily and in disregard of the long-running controversy about it and past lack of consensus for it. (It has also been made irreversible by ordinary editors.)
If your opinion is still that the article belongs at "Bangalore", please say so on the article's talkpage. -- Lonewolf BC (talk) 16:55, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I need your help and would like you to become my admin... is that possible

[edit]

Respected Venu Sir,

This is N.Srinivasan in Delhi, I am 44 years old and am working as PPS in Central Government. I live in Ghaziabad, U.P.

I accidentally chanced upon a few history pages of wikipedia among others while trying to retrieve some information related to some project for my son who was in the 9th Std.

I was however, saddened to learn that (without ever trying to be competitive) the history pages of both Western Chalukyas and the Cholas have been subject to rampant vandalization especially with regard to the attempted portrayal of the Chalukya kings as being lovers or art or as exhibiting exemplary conduct and at the same time trying to portray the Chola kings in a relatively poor light, this despite the fact that during the entire existence of the Later Chalukya kings, not an inch of territory of Tamizhakam belonged to them and the Chola kings inflicted defeat after defeat on them. (here, let me add that I am not trying to be jingoistic but relying purely on historical inscriptions and other epigraphical evidence and not on historians from any part of the country (though historians could be prejudiced on regional lines, yet the more accurate and respected ones among these historians would nonetheless, have relied almost entirely on inscriptional and epigraphical evidences while writing about various empires, kings and kingdoms that ruled various parts of India).

therefore, the problems I encountered have been the following:

First of all I am very new to encyclopedia and currently I have been trying to contribute material (based strictly on epigraphical evidence, mainly inscriptions) on Chola, Chalukya and Pallava dynasties. I really do not know how to place or link epigraphical evidence such as inscriptions in support historical events/incidents during the times of the above named dynasties. To sum it up, I am a very poor editor, Sir, but I am sincere in trying to scour for facts and accurate ones at that.

Secondly, certainly I am lacking knowledge in various outlets for proper intellectual discussion with other editors or 'historians' and have found to my dismay that while I tried to present facts and make a submission, I did not get a reply in kind (in fact, the treatment meted out to me was quite dismissive, if not disdainful, to say the least), in fact, what saddened me was that established persons like KNM, Dineshkannambadi etc. would like to lecture and preach but did not get down to guiding me on how to go about (properly, I guess) editing and building history pages, preferably without attracting negative tags etc.

To start with, Sir, I would like you to become my admin.

Would that be possible? Do reply to me either on your talk page or mine. In anticipation of your positive response, I remain.

Thanks

Dear Srinivasan, unfortunately, Venu62 has left the Wikipedia project. Please try Wikipedia:Mentorship if you need someone to guide you. I appreciate your effort towards adding information supported by epigraphy. Please take care to cite reliable sources in support of any fact that you may add. Then nobody will stop you. Please ask me if you need some help. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:42, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The image on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Vatteluttu.png does not appear to be yours.

[edit]

Hi,

I was browsing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamil_language which is when I chanced on the image http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Vatteluttu.png.

The image you use there is, with a great degree of certainty, my image, from http://www.cis.udel.edu/~rajagopa/Images/IndiaTrip/BrihadeeshwararTemple/55440022.jpg. If it is not indeed your image, to call it "Your own image" is just false, and downright offensive, and illegal to boot. Pretty much every nuance of light and shadow in the image is an exact copy of my image.

You may, of course, have a different provenance to it.

If so, please include the image provenance in the Wikipedia site ("my own image" doesn't quite cut it). If your image is indeed from my site, I expect you to credit me for the image. But before that you should be asking me. I have no issue with the use of my images--even high resolution images, and free, but it is only fair for me to require that you ask me before.

I noticed that you have a Ph.D. as well; I am sure you appreciate the process of crediting prior art and someone else's work.

Thanks, Sundaram M. Rajagopalan. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dylanthomasfan (talkcontribs) 15:22, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dear sir, I also think that the image in question is not Vatteluttu at all. Jamadagni (talk) 18:58, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Baronbean 1917.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Baronbean 1917.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:09, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading File:Wallajah.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:49, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Karanacs (talk) 17:17, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Rajaraja_coin.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Rajaraja_coin.png. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. File source problem with File:UVS Iyer.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:UVS Iyer.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Mahipala requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://en.banglapedia.org/index.php?title=Mahipala_I. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
