Re: Dashes

Hey mate, I was referencing (or intended to reference) WP:DASH. Basically you use hyphens only for hyphenated words; ranges (like the date range for years) you use en dashes (–), and for other stuff you use longer em dashes (—). On a Mac, you can create en dashes with Option hyphen key, or an em dash with Shift Option hyphen; I imagine on Windows it's Alt instead of Option. Thanks! I found an html code of &mdash but I'm not sure if that will work in the editor. StarHOG (talk) 14:38, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Tom, I undid your revision to redirect asteroid 52266 Van Flandern when it looked to me to go to a dead page and you listed it as a minor edit. I'm sorry, I don't know why my machine took be to a dead page...my bad. I was going to undo my undo of your edit, but then noticed that it seems more difficult to access the info on that asteroid now, is that the case? I tried also to read the page where this bot process was explained and discussed, and it seems that some asteroids deserve a page and others don't? Could you please review 52266 and let me know if it needs to be redirected or is a stand alone page?StarHOG (talk) 20:49, 15 January 2016 (UTC)
I saw your comments on my talk page and again, I'm sorry for jumping to conlusions about the redirect and not understanding it. I also see that you've undone my undo so that is fine. However, now clicking on the 52266 van flandern, or performing a search on it, only gives you the list. And when you select that asteroid from the list, it simply refreshes the list, doesn't take you to any information. can we fix that please?StarHOG (talk) 20:57, 15 January 2016 (UTC)
What dead page did 52266 Van Flandern take you to? It could just be a problem with your browser, but it should #redirect you to List of minor planets: 52001–53000#201.
The information on that asteroid is contained on that list and Meanings of minor planet names: 52001–53000#201 (which is linked to at the bottom of the list page), and the JPL Small-Body Database. The reasoning for this is mentioned in WP:NASTRO: It is not the job of Wikipedia to needlessly duplicate content in these databases.
I agree about the circular wikilink on List of minor planets: 52001–53000#201, feel free to remove it. Rfassbind made a handy web-utility that compares the redirect status of each of Wikipedia's numbered asteroid with the JPL SBDB, then spits out wikicode that you can paste into each "List of minor planets: XXXX–XXXX" page, effectively updating 1,000 asteroids at a time. The link I have to it is broken, so I won't paste it here, but maybe he'll come along and paste an updated link. He also may or may not be working on a bot to take care of this maintenance automatically, the need for which is certainly clear.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  00:10, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
Hi StarHOG, I can only confirm Tom's best intention in redirecting the many minor planets articles, that are presumably not noticeable. He does so on clear and concise basis with well defined parameters. Reverting a redirected article is – in my opinion – not an appropriate action. In the case of 52266 Van Flandern, however, I found sufficient information on the body's physical data to be able to re-write the article, rendering any potential discussion about its notability obsolete (I hope), and I will do so right now... As for the List of minor planets#Main index, self-redirects are being removed by me (they can't be removed instantly, though; even if they were, the list needs to be purged afterwards, i.e. "?action=purge", also see Wikipedia:Purge). Please comment if you doubt our efforts or if you have some suggestions to make. Cheers, Rfassbind – talk 10:22, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
The 52266 Van Flandern has been rewritten. -- Rfassbind – talk 11:42, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. As I said, I only "doubted it" in the split second when I first reverted it. My questions and posts afterwards were trying to understand it better, and my confusion over where the article went. StarHOG (talk) 14:15, 16 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Chaim Kanievsky, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Leshem. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Information icon Hello! Thank you for your recent contributions to Brian Van Flandern. I did have one note for you. I am working on a maintenance project to clean up Category:Pages using infoboxes with thumbnail images. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks!! ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Your edit regarding bathrooms in Star Trek

You're wrong. http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Bathroom The link even uses the word "head". The original author who wrote "head" was probably intending to keep in line with Star Trek's naval background, which is a common theme in the Star Trek universe. While I really don't care about the edit itself (whether it is "head", "head" with an explanation, or "bathroom"), what is unfortunate is that you unilaterally made an edit based upon an assumption for which I can only imagine was from a personal whim, without cause. That sucks. Jyg (talk) 18:05, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

My edit was based on my extensive knowledge of Star Trek canon. Your link to Memory Alpha was helpful, though, as it lists two episodes where a bathroom is referenced, once as a "rest room" and second as a "lavatory" I would therefore be more than happy to support an edit using one of these two terms, but, again, "head" has never been used in Star Trek and should not be used. I'm placing a copy of this note on your talk page as well because I don't know if you're monitoring mine. StarHOG (talk) 17:43, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
