Wikifun
Over the course of my Wiki-life, I'm going to introduce some riddles and games users can win barnstars for if they succeed. I figured it would be a good way to make Wiki-friends, so why not try it out?
This month's riddle...
Hey Jimbo. Before I say I say anything, this is one fine website you got here. :) Okay, the question. Well, on your infobox, you have three userboxes. I thought it would be a good idea to put some userboxes in my infobox. However, when I did get around to doing it, all of my ID box content was shifted up, so it wasn't centered, and it created a thick grey line between the info and ID content. Can you tell me why? And, if it's not to much trouble, can you tell me how to fix it so the ID content is centered? Because right now, it looks less than fabulous. Check out my userpage so you can see what I'm talking about. [1]
Thanx for reading, Jimbo. Scrumshus18:10, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
Not to be discouraging, but often times Jimbo isn't able to respond to comments on his talk page (he's a busy man after all). So, if you want, I can fix it for you. -- joturner19:31, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
Joturner, I really like your Userpage layout, so I decided to put a page outline on mine. However, when I did, it didn't outline the enitre page and has a huge blank spot in the middle of it. How do I fix it? I'm only 13 and don't understand WIkipedia's complex stuff for the most part. If you can help me, that would be great. Scrumshus20:19, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
I tried to fix it for you. By the way, you can link to pages on Wikipedia like Wikipedia. If you want different text to appear than the name of the place you link to (like this link: my user page), you can type my user page. -- joturner21:38, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, man. I owe you one. :) Scrumshus 22:25, 15 July 2006 (UTC
You can do <span style="color:red">Dewey Finn</span>, although I must warn you that red links - like gdkhagkjdshgjksah - tend to indicate articles that don't yet exist. -- joturner00:52, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Thank you! Why can't more people be as helpful as you? I'm nominating you for an administrator on August 17th. Scrumshus00:54, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Nice implementation of his page design man. It really doesn't look that bad. The only thing that I would be cautious about it the userboxes. Someone might come by (someday) and try to put them all on a subpage. Regards, Alphachimptalk19:14, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Hey Tariqabjotu, not to be burden, but you do know Wikipedia a whole lot better than I do. i was experiementing with those windows that you can 'Click to Show' and 'Click to Hide'. I made a successful one a User:Scrumshus/Userbox mini. However, when I tried to work it into my inofbox on the left side of my userpage, it wouldn't cooperate. I tried working it inot my alternate inofbox, but it didn't work either. If you follow my links, you'll see what I'm talking about. Can you help me fit my Show/Hide bar into my inofobx? Thanx, Scrumshus17:06, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
I may have fixed the infobox situation. However, you may need to change the sizes of surrounding elements to make your page look okay. -- tariqabjotu (joturner) 23:55, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
I'm not too good at wikisyntax, but I made some changes and it looks like it works now. The userpage does not seem to work well at an 800x600 resolution, however; I'll try to look into this later if I find time. If you need any more help, feel free to ask me. -- Where04:58, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Re: This user is also an american idiot
Really? You made that userbox? That is so damn cool. Which leads me to my question. How'd you find my profile? (Unless your userboxes track which users use 'em). And I'd also like to say you have a real cool userpage. It really looks nice. VelocityEX05:00, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Green Day good article
I really do want to get it listed as a good article again, but I don't think it's ready yet. We still need a lot more citations, cut down on the info for each album (the album pages can be used for that), cut down on POV and fannish writing (which got it delisted in the first place), and so forth, and because of this it would probably be automatically denied if we listed it as a good article nominee. I'll work on it some more in the next few days. WesleyDodds21:38, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
it really goes in-depth into the songs and other material about the albums that are best reserved for the album pages themselves. For comparison, look at The Smashing Pumpkins, which I've worked heavily on. WesleyDodds22:36, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
D'oh! Sorry, on other userpages it had the Firefox logo, so I assumed that the Safari logo had an open copyright. Should've checked the 'page first. Sorry for the minor error.
A Couple Questions
I have seen you around and I have the American Idiot userbox you created. I was wondering how you got obtained the code {User American Idiot}. I have recently created my own userbox and would like to get a code like that but am not sure if I have to get a template page or what. Also, you have Top 10 Websites on your User page. Are we allowed to have those on there since that could be considered advertisement? I would add one too, but I am not sure if it violates the rules (my page needs a major revamp). Orfen22:41, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
What I did was I put User:Orfen/Sig in the signature box in My Preferences using the template . I then checked the box underneath it that says Raw signature. It says no templates or whatever but when I saved it and checked in my sandbox it started to work so everytime I type the "~~~~" it will come up as my sig. OrfenUser Talk00:30, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
Hi, Scrumshus. Do you know who created theses images and theirs copyright status? The "source information" you provided was only a direct link to a jpg scan of a magazine's page, where no info on it's creator and copyright status could be found.
And please not that the Magazinecover tag is not appropriate for this images, as they are not magazine covers being used in articles about the magazine issues. Thanks, --Abu Badali17:00, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
Well, is there an image tag that says something like "This image is in a magazine article" or something? Because the cover thing was the closest I could find. As for the creator, wouldn't the magazine editor be? I'll add that. ScrumshusTalk to me18:15, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
Being in a magazine article is not a source/copyright info in itself. But magazines usually containg the copyright info on the images it uses. You should check that in the magazine and, if the image is usable on Wikipedia, add the information (and a proper chosen tag) to the image's page.
Also, note that promophoto is intended for promotional material. If this image really belongs to "Guitar World/Legends magazine" as you told, it's not a promotional photo (as this magazine is not a source for greenday's press kits). Make sure the copyright info is correct and, if there's no suitable fair use claim applicable, the image should go. Best regards, --Abu Badali21:58, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
I believe that reffers only to the image it's attached to. Either way, the image is in need to be deleted :( , as it either a imagevio or have an unkown copyright status. --Abu Badali15:38, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Image tagging for Image:Green-Day.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Green-Day.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
Hi. I don't believe we have met before, as I have just stumbled across your signature on WP:GAC, and being intrigued, clicked it. What I was brought to was a masterpiece in User Pages, and I would like to congratulate you on creating such a piece of work, and would like to inquire tw things: 1) Did you create it and 2) Where can I get one? Cheers Kingfisherswift16:23, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
Well, I think I found your userbox when I was searching for some in the gallery. It was so long ago, I can't remember, but I probably found it on some person's userpage. If I find who's it was, I'll tell you. Thanks - TheRSJ01:42, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Hi, its me scrumshus again, all grown up. I was wondering (since you're the most knowledgable person i know on wikipedia) if there is a way to change all link colors in a page. not each link seperatly, but as a whole, because on my page, the blue links dont reflect on the black and gray too well. thnx for reading, Good 'Ol scrumshusTalk to me23:13, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
You said: "WHY was the green day image taken off its page? it was under promo photo and had the correct license and rationale. U2 has an image like that, yet THEIRS isn't taken off. how is this image replaceable? obviously it sint because they're havent been any"
Please read WP:FU. Did you provide any evidence that it would be impossible to create a replacement image of this band? That is, that the band has broken up? If not, it is a direct violation of WP:FU. Note that the U2 image is similarly marked for removal. Even if it were not, the fact that another image violates WP:FU is grounds to fix that image, not to violate Wikipedia policy elsewhere. --Yamla23:56, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
There's a history. There's been some hurt feelings. Proceed carefully. You will need powerful Wiki-fu to survive what is to come. :) In a nutshell, "correctly licensed" photos, which were properly uploaded and tagged, are now being reviewed and deleted by a faction which wants to eliminate all fair use of photos, where possible, in Wikipedia. Since every image that can be created can, in some sense, be re-created, it seems the goal of this policy is the elination of all copywritten material (promotional photos and the like) in favor of "free/libre" material, favored by Jimbo, etc. It's a rabbit hole, my friend, but you'll find a whole bunch of us down there, doing our damndest to keep this thing from getting wildly off course. I'm with you - photos I tweaked and licensed have been insta-deleted with no thought given to legitimate rationales as to why they should be kept, much less fairly used. Anyhow .. that's the lay of the land as I see it. Jump in! We need good people making sensible points!

please stop whining
please look at Wikipedia:Userbox migration. userboxes are NOT allowed in the template space, they must be moved to the user space. if you want to fight that, don't come crying to me, cry to the creator of that (Jumbo Wales). Scepia21:32, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
Green Day images
Please see the talk page for the Green Day article. I have added an introduction to the Related Projects section, so please add Fair Use to the images you added. If this is done then Green Day will be a Good Article again. I would add Fair Use but I am not sure how to go about it, so can you please do it? Thanks! OrfenUser Talk | Contribs20:42, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
Re:imprtant scales, etc.
I have added my comment to the WikiProject talk page. I think it is a very good idea, however, it will take a lot of work. Unless we can think of an easier way this might be a bit of work. OrfenUser Talk | Contribs05:05, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
Orphaned fair use image (Image:GreenDayProHead.ogg)
Thanks for uploading Image:GreenDayProHead.ogg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 09:03, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Corrupted OGG's
Hi there the Green Day samples (1, 2, 3, 4) you've uploaded are corrupted. Please upload a fixed version or they will be deleted. Thanks. --antilivedT | C | G22:44, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
Just wanna check that are you fixing those files? You need to export the ogg vorbis file instead of saving the audacity file or otherwise it won't be an audio file. --antilivedT | C | G11:59, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
Hello! I just created a new project that I thought you would be intrested in joining. I'm also looking for members who would intrested to be part of the project. There are some things that need to be done on the Social Distortion article, so feel free to join. Just go here. Alex04:06, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
You should know that the way the adoption process works has changed slightly. To decrease workload at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user on offering adoption please change the Adoptme template to Adoptoffer on the user's user page, and this will add the user to Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption. Users that have already been offered adoption can always have a second or third offer, but by separating out those users that have not had an adoption offer yet, it is hoped that no one will go lacking. Once adoption is complete please use the templates found here on the Adoptee's and your user page.
Furthermore a new Adopter's Area has been created where you can find useful resources and other Adopter's experiences. Please feel free to add any resources you have and if you know of any useful resources for new users / Adoptees then you can add them here.
Thanks for uploading Image:Gtmtsya.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:45, 28 March 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 00:45, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Hello WikiProject Alternative music member. WikiProject Alternative music, in my eyes, has proved to be successful "improving the encyclopaedic coverage of articles relating to alternative rock", and improving their quality as well. One specific example I have witnessed is The Smashing Pumpkins article. The page has gone from a mediocre work, to GA status, to FA nomination. Only appropriate, as the Pumpkins are undeniably one of the most influential alternative rock bands on the 1990's and beyond.
This is the stuff I wish to achieve with the somewhat recently ressurected WikiProject Rock music. I hope to also attract attention to rock music articles of all sorts, and hopefully change some to GA or FA status. I invite you to come join us, and not only be a member of alternative Wikipedians, but the rockin' ones as well. Rock on. -- Reaper X03:05, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Hello Scrumshus, I recently noticed your sig is changing the text on pages. It was like this at Template talk:Green Day until I fixed it by adding </span> at the end of the sig. As you can see at this link the </span> seemed to have worked. Just bringing it to your attention! OrfenUser Talk | Contribs04:46, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
Haha, that is if you don't mind. I put your name on there with a link to your user page. But if you don't want me to use it I can try and make a new one, doesn't matter to me. Yours have always looked really good and my previous ones were nothing to brag about. OrfenUser Talk | Contribs23:58, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
Orphaned fair use image (Image:01 911 For Peace.ogg)

Fair use rationale for Image:03_Welcome_To_Paradise.ogg
Thanks for uploading Image:03_Welcome_To_Paradise.ogg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ShakespeareFan0009:00, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
