User talk:Hamish Gary
Welcome!
[edit]Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. We appreciate encyclopedic contributions, but some of your recent contributions, such as your edit to the page The Process (Skinny Puppy album), have removed content without a good reason to do so. Content on Wikipedia should not be removed just because you disagree with it or because you think it's wrong, unless the claim is not verifiable. Instead, you should consider expanding the article with notable and verifiable information of your own, citing reliable sources when you do so. If you'd like to experiment with the wiki's syntax, please do so in the sandbox rather than in articles. The following links will help you begin editing on Wikipedia:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia

Please bear these points in mind while editing Wikipedia:
- Respect copyrights – do not copy and paste text or images directly from other websites.
- Maintain a neutral point of view – this is one of Wikipedia's core policies.
- Take particular care while adding biographical material about a living person to any Wikipedia page and follow Wikipedia's Biography of Living Persons policy. Particularly, controversial and negative statements should be referenced with multiple reliable sources.
- No edit warring or abuse of multiple accounts.
- If you are testing, please use the Sandbox to do so.
- Do not add troublesome content to any article, such as: copyrighted text, libel, advertising or promotional messages, and text that is not related to an article's subject; doing so will result in your account or IP being blocked from editing.
- Do not use talk pages as discussion or forum pages as Wikipedia is not a forum.
The Wikipedia tutorial is a good place to start learning about Wikipedia. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and discussion pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~ (the software will replace them with your signature and the date). Again, welcome! Copyediting
[edit]Hamish Gary, we can always use another copyeditor, so I appreciate your efforts. But please don't label your changes as "mandatory", especially when what you are actually doing is mainly stylistic, as in your first edit, at Indian summiters of Mount Everest, or this edit to Joe Orton, where your changes were to U.S. English from British English. Far from being mandatory, the Joe Orton edit was in fact incorrect: under English Wikipedia policy, articles should be in the variety of English associated with the subject (in this case, a British person) or if there is no such association, left in the variety used by the first editor. The Orton article is tagged "EngvarB" at the top as guidance. Many people are unaware of how greatly other varieties of English can differ from their own, or that other varieties are equally correct, but since this is an international project, part of copyediting here is to respect the issue. Also, be sure to look at the whole article when you copyedit: your edit to Sam Shockley, again stylistic changes labeled "mandatory grammar changes", affected very little of a sprawling article with many problems; did you not consider there was more needed doing to justify the article having a "copyedit" tag? In fact, your edit to Sarah Knauss introduced a grammar error, a singular verb with "both". If you are not sure why many of your changes do not qualify as grammar corrections, or what is a required change, maybe step back for a while and focus on obvious misspellings (checking first that they are not UK or other non-US variants!), obvious misuses of words, and things like that? [edit]Hello, Hamish Gary,
Thank you for creating Zero dynamics.
I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:
Hi Hamish Gary, I attempted to review your recently created article, but I'm afraid that I find it incomprehensible. (For context, I have a PhD in mathematics, though in a field distant from differential equations.) It would be extremely helpful if you would expand the lead section of the article so that it summarizes the article and explains what it is about.
The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Joel B. Lewis}}
. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~
. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.
Delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

Speedy deletion nomination of Lentz's algorithm
[edit]A tag has been placed on Lentz's algorithm requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from the article namespace to a different namespace except the Category, Template, Wikipedia, Help, or Portal namespaces.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Speedy deletion nomination of Klingit
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Klingit, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:
- It seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. (See section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.
- It appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), individual animal, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. (See section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. — Tulsi 24x7 05:32, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

Managing a conflict of interest
[edit]Hello, Hamish Gary. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization, clients, or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam#External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
