Hi Ham,

Just thought I'd say thanks for your contributions to the Portal's showcase picture section - I like the gallery format you have introduced at Portal:London/Pictures/Wikipedia featured pictures. However, for some reason, the National Gallery image is not being shown... I don't really understand why - the HTML seems ok... perhaps you know better?

Cheers, Deano (Talk) 15:06, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Don't know, sorry - it works fine for me. Ham 15:11, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

cquote

I noticed you changed the comments about Freeze by Saatchi on the Saatchi Gallery article from a blockquote to a "c quote". It looks pretty, but I'm not familiar with it, and wonder which circumstances it should be used in. Thanks.

Tyrenius 05:01, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

As far as I can see, it's just that, a prettier alternative to blockquote. Here's a list of pages that use it – a relatively catholic mix of historical biographies, computer game articles etc. I imagine the only inappropriate use would be in an article on a particularly sombre or serious subject, where it would probably be judged to be too cartoony. I like the template, but feel free to revert if you feel it lowers the tone of the article.
The list of exhibitions in three columns was likewise just an aesthetic tweak, and I think it will look better when the list is more complete. Regards, Ham 13:02, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ham, thanks for the info. It seems to me as it is so prominent it should be used for an outstanding quote as in Tony Banks, Baron Stratford (or in a "fun" article). I'm not altering it in Saatchi Gallery for now anyway, as I'm not working on that article at the moment - I spent a bit of time dealing with POV edits. The columns are certainly much better, and I would have used them if I had known how at the time. Best Tyrenius 16:39, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Holbein-ambassadors.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 15:55, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

  • I uploaded this pic when I was starting off in Wikipedia; it's actually a duplicate of the identically-named Image:Holbein-ambassadors.jpg on Wikicommons, uploaded by a different user with the PD-art template. At the time I thought that images have to be uploaded to Commons and Wikipedia separately, but of course they don't, so you may delete this waste of server space. HAM 16:12, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Ham -- Thanks for your kind note re. my expansion of the Met's article. I'll take a look at my source material and start gathering some footnotes. If you have any suggestions to improve the article's overall format, I'd appreciate your input; currently, with the addition of all the department details, it seems a bit sprawling and unwieldy (a bit like trying to see every department at the Met in one afternoon). Ham, I see you made the original version of this so I have a question for you. Why are Performing arts and Æsthetics(which is categorized only under philosophy) part of the visual arts categories? I already made an edit where I removed Literature. Can Performing arts and Æsthetics be removed as well? It looks like Portal:Arts/Categories already has this. Removing these would be more consistent with Arts. Thanks - Clubmarx | Talk 00:48, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Sorry about that; the page is just a copy of the original version of Portal:Arts/Categories (back when it was still the Art Portal). I should have looked more closely at it before dumping the text wholesale. You're right, the performing arts and aesthetics do not belong. HAM 07:56, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Portal:Visual arts

I left a question for you at Portal talk:Visual arts regarding the first section of the portal. Clubmarx | Talk 18:51, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Arts

A lot of people (including me) has listed their names onto the proposed projects page under arts. The project shall proceed. Notify me on my talk page if you're starting to create the page of your proposed wikiproject. Anonymous_anonymous_Have a Nice Day 15:01, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm terribly sorry, but the project has been up and running for weeks at Wikipedia:WikiProject Arts! I was sure I'd put up a project now underway message on the proposal page, but either the edit didn't process or somebody's taken it off. Again, sorry to have left you out! Anyone else on the list who still hasn't posted on the talk page for WP:WPArts is about to get notification of the project's existence on theirs. HAM 17:21, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm making a Template for the wikiProject. It will be Anonymous_anonymous_Have a Nice Day 18:35, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Nice modifications on the template. Anonymous_anonymous_Have a Nice Day 18:01, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Just a reminder...

You had nominated Category:Art magazines for renaming, but when I went to remove the renaming tag after a keep decision there wasn't a {{cfr}} template on the category page. I figure it was just an oversight, but just thought I'd ping you on it. Without a tag, people don't nessecarily know that the category is up for renaming / deletion unless they watch CFD a lot. :) Cheers! Syrthiss 12:58, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

I was thinking of updating the featured picture on the Visual arts portal. I see you were the last to update it. Is there a process for nominating pics? I'd like to use the Aalto Vase image. It doesn't look like there's a formal process, just thought I'd check first. Clubmarx 19:44, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Feel free to update the picture. There's no formal nominating process yet, but there's no reason not to be bold and create one (I'm busy creating one for Portal:Arts at the moment, and have found that Portal:London has a good example of how to do it). Fair play to you, Clubmarx, you've been giving this portal a lot of attention lately, so I've added your name to the list of maintainers for P:VA on Wikipedia:Portal/Directory. Hi Ham its Amandajam

About the Cumean Sybil.

I presume your a bloke. If you saw another bloke who was feeling really randy, would you know the signs?

I'm a woman of the same age as the Cumean Sibyl, and believe me, I KNOW what her problem is! I'm also an artist. I look at people with a very perceptive eye.

Mandyjm

Ham, its Jam

What the heck has the Sibyl's wizened appearance got to do with the paragraph?

That paragraph is not about wizened, pretty, curly-headed, broad-chested, chubby.... it's about feeling, thinking, listening, doing....

Mandyjm

Response to this and the post above it

It's a fair cop: I'm a bloke, and nowhere near Cumaea's age. Regarding your second post, well, I don't think I'll be the last person to look at that paragraph and wonder what the sibyl having a problem with bowel movements has to do with anything. Thanks for toning it down to "may be incontinent" in your revert, though; it is appreciated. HAM 17:39, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Bowels

No, it's the waterworks that are the typical problem of a woman of that age. Particularly one that's had kids. Judging by the boobs, she's had kids. The give away is that one of her feet is on the ground and the other is raised so that her upper thighs are together as well as her knees.

One of the external links goes to a review of an article (I think) about Michelangelo's inetrest in anatomy. The more I look at his works, the more I appreciate his understanding of the outward human signs of what the person was experiencing, either physically or emotionally. And their physical experience included their human frailty. Look closely at the prophets and sibyls and you may find figures suffereing from what common ailments. Who has a cold, who is sitting awkwardly because he has piles, who has toothache, who is arthritic, who has a migraine? Just a possibility, I haven't actually done it!

OK, but David, Jonah, Ezekiel, Bacchus and Moses all have one foot on the ground and the other raised as well, and none of them bore children! I was under the impression that it was a trick borrowed from contrapposto, and Michelangelo usually uses it to the effect of throwing the figures off balance. HAM 11:19, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Speculation

I agree. I've inserted a fact instead.

--Amandajm 02:01, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Michelangelo

Hi Ham

I think that the entire section on Michelangelo the artist- Appraisal, could be lifted out.

The problem is that it covers all three major works David, ceiling, Last Judgement, looking at philosophy/theology and style. I don't think it ought to be broken up. Iy would require a lot moore writing to put each one in the context of each other. Yet I'm hesitant to start a new page with it. Might be the best thing to do though.

I agree that the method stuff is better under Sistine Chapel.

Actually when I started writing, I thought that the works hadn't been suffuciently dealt with- didn't realise they'd been given separate pagees! Lack of experience... I'lll get there!

OK! What's your suggestion....new page or try to chop iit up and stuff it in?

Wish this blinking keybooard didnt double letters up. If I'm careful it leaves them ouut. If I thump it, it gives multiples. Yoou should see what it does if I'm reallly pissssed offff!

Hello Ham. I have a question about Template:Painting and when I looked at its history I noticed that you have worked on it, so perhaps you can help me. Do you know if there is a way to include more than one name, or perhaps some text (e.g. "circle of Raphael", "attributed to Raphael") in the field "painter="? I'm thinking specifically about The Vision of the Cross, which is usually attributed to a whole group of painters. Thanks, Skarioffszky 14:37, 11 October 2006 (UTC) P.S.: I've found a solution [1], though I still hope there is a simpler way to do it. Skarioffszky 15:07, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Never mind all that. I simply created a new template Template:Painting2 for cases like this. Skarioffszky 17:24, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Dear Ham, I am attempting to find out more about the painting on the bookcover here: http://www.silveradomuseum.org/images/rls2.jpg. Essentially my interest is in finding out as to whether the image could be used on the Dubh Artach page. It was brought to my attention via Talk:Dubh Artach, the relevant parts of which I reproduce below:

"In addtion to the photo it would be great if someone knows the source of the painting used as this bookcover. [2] If its over 100 years old then Template:PD-art may apply. Edit by GameKeeper "

Any advice or assistance gratefully received. Ben MacDui 13:24, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

I am sending this out to wikiart folks everywhere,

so please don't feel picked on. Here's my thing. I've been watching list of sculptors recently and have been weeding out the entries in red on the theory that this is an index of sculptors in wikipedia. However i have been reluctant to remove artists that I know or discover to be real, wikipedia worthy people, so am trying to decide if i should just do a stub - maybe a lot of stubs - of these folks or leave them on the list [I HATE lists with too much red - check out the List of Frank Lloyd Wright works for example.

For example, i checked out one, François-Joseph Duret (1804 - 1865) and discovered that there are at least two sculptors with that name, (1732 - 1816) and (1804 - 1865)- this one is the son - and both probably could comfortably be in wikipedia. I did have a rather bad moment recently when someone DELETED my article on Connor Barrett about an hour [maybe less] after I first posted it, on the theory that he was not wikiworthy [or something] and a lot of these fairly remote (in time and place from me) artists are a lot more obscure than Barrett. So, i would like to know that i have the support of the wikipedia art history community before doing this. Drop me a line, if you wish to sit down and be counted. Life is good, Carptrash 05:03, 4 November 2006 (UTC) P.S. although i do mostly American art i have contributed to lots on non-American articles including Aleijadinho, Ásmundur Sveinsson, Einar Jonsson, Gunnfrídur Jónsdóttir, Henry Moore, Ivan Meštrović, Ørnulf Bast, Rayner Hoff, and probably some others. I say this because most of the stubs I'm proposing would be Europeans. Oh yes, check out the article on David (Bernini) - which sorely needs a decent picture. Got one? Einar

NPG move again

See my comments re renaming shannanigans on the NPG talk page. I am not necessarily 100% against renaming the page (although with reservations), but I am 100% against people doing these things without telling anybody. Oh well.... Badgerpatrol 08:49, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Your sonnet

Forgive me for not having acknowledged it sooner, but I wanted to thank you for the lovely sonnet on my userpage. You obviously have quite some talent and I hope that I can repay you with a sonnet as good as yours. I have returned recently from an extended wiki-break. I'm not sure if there is still much discussion on arts categories and such, but I'd love to rejoin it if there is. Take care! Cheers! *Exeunt* Ganymead | Dialogue? 17:05, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Good to see you back, Ganymead! The sonnet, as I think I noted in the closing lines, was just a bit of fun doggerel, but I'm glad you liked it! My Wikipedia activity has been reduced somewhat now that I'm at university; a bit of wiki-gnomery here and there. The Arts Project and the Portal are rather dead as a result (although the former seems to have a steady trickle of new members); it would be nice if they could be revived some time. Hope to see you around on the 'pedia doing more good work on theatre articles! [talk to the] HAM 12:28, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

El Greco

Thanks for your comments in the peer-review of El Greco. You'll see I've reorganized the material per your suggestions. I want your opinion for the changes. I just did not yet changed the title of "Works". This section deals mainly with the attribution problems, but my initial goal was to create a section speaking about the total number of his paintings, drawings and sculptures as attributed by modern scholars. Starting the research for the section, I saw this interesting diachronical debate about the attributions and I analysed it.

I thought if it would be useful to keep the title of the section "Works" and create two subsections: "Attribution debate" (the current section) as you suggested and a new sub-section "Largest Collections". But I don't know if this last sub-section is really necessary. I first though to name this article "Notable Works" (like in Salvador Dali), but I think it wouldn't be useful to create a list of works already mentioned most of them in previous sections. I also thought about speaking in this section about some of the El Greco's works auctioned off during the last two decaded (most of which bought by Greek museums, municipalities etc.) But again I'm not sure if this is necessary. And then I though about this "largest Collection", treating El Greco's works whereabouts in general once again inspired by the last two paragraphs of the "Notable Works" section in Dali. But again I did not yet implement it, wondering if a section saying that "most of his works are in Spain at X and Z museum", "Outside Spain the biggest collection is in Washington", "The Greek Gallery bought the B and the C painting and now has the A B C" etc. is really useful.

So, my real concern, if I haven't make myself yet clear, is to make the "Works" section to be really a "Works" section treating the whole spectrum. I hope I did not confuse you much! But I'd really like to have some feedback and your opinion. Cheers!--Yannismarou 11:45, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Much improved; I can see that you have great plans for this article! The division into 'Life', 'Art' and 'Legacy' makes for a clearer and less jumpy read. The idea of discussing where El Greco's works have ended up is a good one, but I would think the best place for that is in Posthumous artistic reputation. If the largest body of his work outside Spain is in the Washington NGA, founded as late as 1937, that must say something about how he has fared in artistic and intellectual fashions. It probably doesn't merit a section on its own – more like a paragraph. Works as a section title sounds to me as if it should be a sub-section of Art, so I am still in favour of a change (IMO, it shouldn't be slotted into the Art section, which is broadly about style, as Works is really about historiography). A section titled Questions of attribution or some such would still be fitting if your ultimate aim is for that section to discuss "the total number of his paintings, drawings and sculptures as attributed by modern scholars". All the best, [talk to the] HAM 13:19, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Claude painting

I'm pretty sure that they can't claim copyright over the straight reproduction even under British law - I went through this with an image of some painting ages ago, but can't for the life of me remember what it was. I think in order to copyright it they have to have altered it in some way or to have in some way added to it, not just taken a photo. I haven't got time to dig through and find out the specific details now - we could always rewrite it as a fair use case until we get clarification (which would be viable, as it is a central feature of that article, but would mean dropping it from the DYK page), or do a quick search for another version that doesn't try and exert copyright.
