Hi. Please see T:TDYK. It'd be nice if you could expand the article a bit. Regards, Theleftorium (talk) 12:48, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Neutral Admin Review

It was suggested at the Admin Noticeboard that I send you e-mail info for review that is somewhat sensitive and I feel I cannot post it on Wikipedia. Since you and I have never dealt with each other before, I think you would be a good person to review it. Please let me know if you're interested. Thank you! -OberRanks (talk) 13:08, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

If you send me the email, I'll certainly take a look an tell you whether I think I can handle it. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:23, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Thank you. I used the Wikipedia e-mail feature and sent you the details. Look forward to hearing from you. -OberRanks (talk) 15:40, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your input. I plan to take no further action as what you stated was correct. All the best. -OberRanks (talk) 16:04, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

AFC

I've twice now had editors think that the AFC you just templated me about on 'Frangipani' was 'my submission'. It's not. In fact the article creator had placed it at WP:RM, so following the instructions I removed the RM template and put an AFC template on the article. That should really be the end of my involvement, I don't need to know the fate of the article. Don't you have processes for checking whether you're templating the right editor? Did you really think an admin would be using AFC to submit an article like that? Fences&Windows 16:51, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Lol, it's the script that most people use for reviewing AfC submissions. I guess it automatically templates the editor who put the AfC tag on it, not the original creator! Sorry about that! :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:54, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi HJ,

My name is Ginger Schlanger and I emailed you yesterday regarding the deletion of Suniva, Inc. Did you receive my feedback? I have also revised and made the article even briefer under SunivaR -- as I mentioned earlier, this is very similar to a dozen other solar energy companies' pages on Wikipedia, whereas ours, differentially, offers an advancement in the technology (efficiency at low cost). We do not sell to individuals; this is not meant as an ad or promotion. Please advise as soon as you can.

Thank you, Artisun (talk) 17:23, 8 July 2010 (UTC) Ginger

Hi HJ, we had a protection clash there; just as you were declining, I was adding six months on the basis of this year's protection log. I have to go offline now, so I don't have time to recheck it. Therefore please feel free to undo the protection as you see fit! Cheers, SlimVirgin talkcontribs 23:44, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Rollback

Sorry to trouble you. I've commented on a few of your recent decisions at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Rollback. It seems you are looking for reasons not to give out this user-right, which is the wrong approach in my opinion. So I wanted to ask if you could reflect on your criteria for giving out rollback. Given that it is extremely easy to withdraw it later, I think you could lower the bar substantially. Would you mind too much if I gave out rollback to some of those editors? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:19, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

I don't have any criteria as such, but rollback is purely for vandalism- there's no status attached to it, it's just a reverting tool- so I give it out (quite liberally in fact) to those who have some demonstrated understanding of what vandalism is and how to deal with it. That said, I don't consider warnings to be optional. They're the best way we have of keeping track of vandals. From what I've seen, my "criteria", so to speak, are in line with those of most other admins at PERM/R and perhaps more liberal than some. I have, on many occasions, reconsidered requests in a matter of a day or 2 from editors who have taken on board the feedback I offered and come here to request reconsideration. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:28, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. Sorry if it seemed if I was picking on you; this was certainly not the intention. I just happened to notice a trend which concerned me on that page. I'm sure your intuition with regard to these requests is usually correct, but some of those that I commented on today still seem somewhat harsh. If you are unwilling to reconsider these, then I hope you will not feel slighted if I reassess these requests myself? Again, sorry for bringing this (minor) criticism to your talk page because I know you do a lot of good work :) — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:41, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
I wouldn't object if you wanted to take another look at User:DarthVader or User:Mr.choppers but I stand by my gut instinct on the most recent two for the minute. I appreciate the compliment- your signature is a common sight when I'm patrolling the {{editprotected}} requests! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:12, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Personally, I would have done DarthVader, but denied the rest- then again I tend to have high standards; not due to the power of the rollback button per se, but the potential to make an utter mess with Huggle, Igloo and the like. Courcelles (talk) 22:20, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
An utter mess but one which rarely happens and one that could fairly quickly and easily sorted out I believe. The flip side is that you may be deterring decent editors (and potentially fantastic editors of the future) from helping here. Anyway I understand that my standards may be lower than average so I'll leave it there for now. Cheers — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:08, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Replacing United States with the USA template

I noticed that you changed a couple of infobox United States of America's to the USA template. Although I don't really think its necessary, I don't personally have a problem with that but I wanted to mention that currently all of the Medal of Honor recipients have a standard of United States of America so if we change it for one I would prefer we change them all to be the same. Additionally some editors dont like having icons of things in the infoboxes and you might get some comments about it. From a couple of the users (specifically dealing with the American Civil War and Aviation related ones). Also, do you intend to replace the branch with the branch/icon as well? If so I could do these with AWB rather quickly and easily. --Kumioko (talk) 19:38, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

I wasn't planning to change the branch fields, but frankly because I can't be bothered! As for the {{USA}} template, I just thought it was convenient (in terms of markup) and aesthetically pleasing. It's pretty standard with British Army officers (except with {{UK}} instead of {{USA}}, obviously!), where I have more experience (and interest). My only real interest in MoH winners is that there's a brilliant IP editor churning these article out at a rate of about 3 a day at AfC. If you think it's worth changin them en masse, then your AWB assisatance would certainly be useful! :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:44, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Yeah I noticed that editor a couple weeks ago myself and I have to say, for an IP using the article creation process they seem to have a pretty darn good grasp of what the rules are. Most are pretty good start class and a few are pushing into the B class territory in my opinion. I already touched up, expanded and promoted one to B with very minor work (like reducing the 18 refs in one sentence to 4 and moving the rest to external links) and I think I am going to build it into a GA article in the next couple months once I knock out the Spanamwar recipients and get that list, the living recipients list and the Second battle of Fort Fisher list to FL. To be honest on the allegiance/branch thing I got bigger fish to fry at the moment, I just wanted to save you some effort. BTW I have some ideas about who that editor might be but since I don't know for certain I am just gonna say thank you mysterious IP contributor and keep rollin'. --Kumioko (talk) 03:24, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

No idea, mate. I ran screaming back to monobook when they rolled vector out! Besides, I use Google Chrome which lets you use handy keyboard shortcuts (watch is "alt" "w"). :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:01, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Watch is the little star. N419BH 21:04, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
I switched back to Monobook the instant Vector became default. Vector is not easy to get used to, after using Monobook for many years. MC10 (TCGBL) 23:53, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
I was in the middle of an edit when they made the change! I switched back because I'd only just got used to having my admin buttons where they were and didn't want them moving all over the place! Besides, I have loads of scripts running that were buggered by vector! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:56, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Meh. I like the look of vector, so I stayed, but admittedly the search bar is horrendously broken and the whole thing takes longer to load. But then, I basically became active around the time when the beta was first rolled out, so I don't remember much of monobook :) (btw, thanks for flag-protecting this. The edit warring is a pain.) sonia♫♪ 00:07, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
I hate Vector, and I hate that it was imposed upon the regulars, with no consideration for our objections. The usual defence is, "well, if you don't like it, switch back to monobook" - sure, I have - but that makes it exceedingly difficult for me to help all the new users who are defaulted to Vector, because I'm trying to talk them through things...so I have to switch my damn skin all the time. And I can't use Vector all the time, because lots of tools don't work (apart from the sheer horribleness of it all).
I realise this complaint here is pretty useless, but I have to grumble; I'm English.  Chzz  ►  12:38, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
I hate that it just arrived out of the blue. And I like the different coloured background for mainspace and other namespaces in monobook. I could probably get used to Vector eventually- I'm fine with it on Wikinews but there should have been a more gradual switch over so that everything didn't suddenly break, but what do we volunteers know? It's not like we wrote the encyclopaedia for free is it? Oh, wait... HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:49, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

You closed the AfD with the article being "provisionally" named Bradford murders. However, an editor has pointed out on the talk page that an earlier series of serial murders also took place in and around Bradford: Peter Sutcliffe. What would be the recommended process for gaining consensus on a new, clearer title? (or consensus to leave as is). Active Banana (talk) 01:33, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Well the title was just provisional to avoid the BLP issues. I suggest you raise the matter on the talk page, you might want to put a requested move tag on it, and then see what the consensus is after a few days. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:50, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Today's FA - protection

Just wondering why you protected today's FA - Royal Gold Cup. I thought the idea was that we generally keep TFA's unlocked (even though they can receive more vandalism because of their prominence) to demonstrate the point of "anyone can edit". I don't think the RGC is going to receive any special level of vandalism so, unless I've misunderstood the policy could you unlock it please? Witty Lama 00:29, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

It's only move-protected, which is perfectly normal for Today's Featured Article. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:31, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
Also, the idea changed after a recent RfC, when the discussion was closed with consensus to treat TFA as any other article (HJ, you ought to know about this... You started the RfC! ) mono(how's my driving?) 00:42, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
I know what the outcome of my own RfC was! ;) I wasn't going to mention it because that was only for edit protection- TFAs are- and pretty much always have been- move protected because the need to move an article in that 24 hour period is vastly outweighed by the effects of page-move vandalism and good faith but misguided moves. Trust me, when trying to sort the Main Page out, there is nothing more annoying than people moving an article back and forth! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:48, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
We certainly don't want Main Page on wheels (or wings, for that matter)... I am surprised, after clerking DYK a bit, about the good-faith system of Main Page content, especially after stuff like this (see first story). However, it seems to work pretty decently, especially with admins ready to correct things. mono(how's my driving?) 00:57, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

iWuz Bold. mono(how's my driving?) 01:27, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Indeed, Main Page on wheels or Main Page brian pepper's day or something equally absurd would be unwelcome, though not as bad as some of the titles I've seen pages moved to. I like the change, btw- the "your attention is needed if you don't review this edit the world is coming to an end" was a little OTT! :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 09:30, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

That's from WP:ANI too, and I wrote it after advising an editor to drop the stick and got a reply of, "I'll apologize if he apologizes!" I felt like giving him teh fish at that point but replied with one of my favorite phrases. I then determined that it wasn't in Wikipedia, so I wrote about it. N419BH 15:55, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
Ha! ANI can be a lot like dealing with small children! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:58, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
I think a good deal of the time it is dealing with small children. Oh, if you want, look over User:N419BH/Sandbox I'm kind of stuck on it (need sources). BTW, it's an article! N419BH 16:01, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
On that page you wrote, you might want to emphasize the "NO UNPROTECTED IMAGES" bit. I believe the entire collective WP:SYSOP posse got trouted via WP:AN the other day after the featured picture made it to the main page unprotected :). N419BH 16:08, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
Again? The bot's supposed to rake care of that! It doesn't matter for ITN anyway, because Template:In the news is cascade protected, so if I forget to protect the image first, it'll be protected as soon as I save the page. I'll have a look at your sandbox, but why do you have to write about planes? Why can't you write about pretty actresses? They're much easier to find sources for! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:30, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Why can't we cascade protect the whole darn Main Page? And we have tabloids to write about the various escapades and endeavors of actors/actresses. I'm not getting involved in that mess. N419BH 23:01, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

It is cascade protected. The problem is that, unless someone edits the Main Page directly (ie not ITN or DYK or whatever, the MP itself), there's no way of knowing how long it will take for the cascade to take effect on a new image. It could be instant, it could take hours, but with ITN cascade protected, the cascade-a-ma-bobby catches everything transcluded onto ITN when I hit save. Yeah, complicated! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:10, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, needs to be instant unless we want...uhhh..."questionable content" on the main page. N419BH 23:21, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Needless to say he's attracted a fairly massive fanclub on facebook. Expect a brash of BLP violations, POV edits, and vandalism from said fanclub on his article here. Also expect the link to said fanclub to be spammed hourly for the next week. N419BH 14:31, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Duh moment. Can u educate me as to the difference in Irish and American whiskey? Hell In A Bucket (talk) 17:50, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Simple. Neither are whisky ;). Whisky comes from Scotland only, though when in Japan, I don't mind a little of the local single malts. Courcelles (talk) 17:52, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
So a scottish whisky is different how? I've only had Jim and jack and am interested in the differences if it can be described. Hell In A Bucket (talk) 17:54, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
For the record, my favourite whisky might be the 15-year from Laphroaig, though their 10-year has more flavour, the smoke is too strong for my tastes. When not in the mood for an Islay... well, I've got 18-year Glenlevet and 10-year sherry Macallan right now- can't say I'm too enthusiastic about either, though. Courcelles (talk) 17:56, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

reply to using IG.. If you use windows, def use huggle. IG has no whitelist and it wastes time by showing edits by very experienced editors and pages such as the sandbox. I use windows and mac os x and have tried them both. HG also has many options for reverting; such as a custom edit summary. Awesome. The only downside: it crashes. but not as much as it used to. -Tommy! [message] 22:25, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

signature

Is it well known? Is it verifiable? Recently there has been some discussion about signatures, Jimbo says they are of no educational or encyclopedic value. Off2riorob (talk) 17:28, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Is the signature available in widely-published sources? Off2riorob (talk) 17:31, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello? Off2riorob (talk) 17:35, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Bloody hell, give me a chance! If it bothers you that much, revert me, but signatures are pretty common in WP articles. Whatever he likes to think, Jimbo is only one man and his opinion should be treated as anybody else's. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:38, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

I was just name dropping, other editors feel the same way, myself included. I was wondering why you inserted it , it is uncited as far as I can see it is a claim of a tracing of a private correspondence, I would prefer it if you self reverted. Off2riorob (talk) 17:43, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, we just recently after a request from the Green Aussie party removed signatures from those BLP articles and this is worth a read Wikipedia:Signatures_of_living_persons Off2riorob (talk) 17:48, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Interesting. I never realised it was such a big deal, though I was surprised when I first saw one in an article way back when I first started editing. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:52, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Some are so well known and widely published by the subjects as to be worth inclusion, Beyonce for example publishes all her stuff with her signature. If someone is a big public figure like clegg I could support if it was widely citable and when I looked at the commons and found it was a tracing of a private letter and I couldn't find him publishing it on his personal website I think it is a weak claim for insertion, perhaps someone will search more and find support for adding it but without it, for the time being I feel better with its removal. Off2riorob (talk) 18:11, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Fair point, I suppose. It's not as if the article is desperately lacking in its absence. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:17, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

I've separated out a new section for the recent event, but being an ITN/C newb I'm still unsure if it's enough. I'm mindful this article is a bit non-mainstream for ITN. Anyway... what do you think? Worth pursuing? TFOWR 14:51, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

I think it's an interesting story, and it's nice to have something a little less mainstream on ITN- there was a time a few weeks ago when ITN was quite literally flood, election, flood, bombing, election, flood. It's nice to vary things, especially when the bolded article is an FA. I'll have a look at the article. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:54, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi HJ

I'm editting George Washington to get it to GA status but I'll need help, I recently renominated it but the reviewer had found several grammatical errors, inconsistencies etc. and I was wondering if you'd like to help. If you could I'd appreciate it. Regards, Fridae'§Doom | Talk to me 01:04, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Interesting. American history isn't really my area, but I'm amazed that Washington isn't already a GA and I've been looking to spend some time in the mainspace that's not related to popular culture, so sure, I'll see what I can do.I'll certainly be able to copy edit it for you. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:12, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
I can do it if you want. Mr. R00t Talk 17:08, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Any help would be appreciated. It's a massive article and if the rest of the article is anything like the lead, it'll take quite a bit of work. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:11, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
True, I was surprised myself, after that I'm gonna start work on the other Founding Fathers which also weren't passed as being GA Status... remember to strike each issue as you're fixing it otherwise we won't know where we're up to. Fridae'§Doom | Talk to me 21:50, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
You should probably just mark it with {{done}} or {{tick}}, rather than strike it, but that's just etiquette. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:54, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
It's almost done. Only 5 more sections to go! Mr. R00t Talk 23:49, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello again

Heya HJ, I was wondering if you could do my editor review? It's here. Thanks! Fridae'§Doom | Talk to me 22:07, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

You don't need to create a new section for every message- you can just post in the existing section. ;) But yes, I'll be happy to have a look and give you a review, but it'll probably be in the morning. I think I'm going to log in as Whisky drinker and do some vandal whacking for a bit. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:17, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Ok then :D thanks buddy! I'll post in this section next time, sorry 'bout the bother. Fridae'§Doom | Talk to me 22:31, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Hey umm, I just got approved for use of AWB and the guide is really confusing... could you perhaps link me to a guide that is less confusing? I used AWB and I did not know what was happening, don't worry though Wikipedia is still in one piece... I think *crash* spoke too soon... j/k Fridae'§Doom | Talk to me 05:26, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Not always a new section?

(talk page stalker) You don't need to start a new section for each message? Couldn't resist. dffgd [messages·edits] 22:21, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

ROFL. Tempting isn't it, so wait there's a template for stalking someone's talk page? Fridae'§Doom | Talk to me 22:32, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, {{tps}}. Comes in handy, especially since (relatively) nothing goes on at my talk page! :) dffgd [messages·edits] 22:35, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
I think the {{tps}} template is possibly my most significant contribution to wikipedia as far as amount of use goes, hehe - rather shameful! ~ mazca talk 22:38, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I bet it's transcluded a lot of places! dffgd [messages·edits] 22:42, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
You could always get over to AIV Mazca! I think I've made a few reports from this (my alt) account tonight. There seem to be a few nutters going round, including one intent on blanking every project page he can find! Whisky drinker | HJ's sock 23:52, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

ANy reason you're iglooing without the benefit of your block button? Courcelles (talk) 00:40, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm just getting used to it, so there's something to be said from a second opinion at AIV. That and I don't like it clogging up my contributions page and I have an alternative account that's sat there doing nothing otherwise! I never used Huggle or Igloo before I got the bit, so it's interesting to see what everyone else has to make do with! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:10, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
This page has been on my watchlist since I had my first proper discussion with HJ :) He's a great fellow, nice and very much stalker-friendly :) Fridae'§Doom | Talk to me 05:13, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Oh HJ, Twinkle Huggle (blech, can't type lol) is just like normal Wikipedia, it only took me a few minutes to get used to it since it's really newb friendly. Is Igloo any good since I downloaded it on my main comp and will try it along with Twinkle when I can access that infernal PC... Fridae'§Doom | Talk to me 05:29, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Another note from me, uhh is it possible my alt Fridae'sDoom.alt could have reviewer and rollback rights since that's the account I'm going to use in public places or if I lost access to my main account temporarily and don't want to go through account recovery in public. Thanks Fridae'§Doom | Talk to me 05:39, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

I'll have a look at your essay in a minute! ;) Meanwhile, I've given your sock confirmed, reviewer and rollback rights! The simplest way of getting your account back if it's compromised is to have email enabled so if you ever email someone via WP, they'll be able to verify that it's you (just make sure your email an WP passwords are different, just in case!). I'll have a look over the next few days, but I like to have a bit of time on my hands for that sort of thing- I want to analyse your deleted edits and all sorts of other stuff, but, obviously, I need to be logged in to my admin account to see your deleted edits. I can't promise I'll be swift, but I'll be thorough! Whisky drinker | HJ's sock 00:38, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Error by yourself?

Here you said you had fully protected the article Mesut Özil for 24 hours. However, the real protection log says that you semi-protected the page for one week. What is going on? Did you write the wrong in TW? /HeyMid (contributions) 08:50, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

EDIT: Oh, sorry, you corrected your mistake here. /HeyMid (contributions) 08:53, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Heh, that's nothing - I've listed a page as being protected for three days when I'd just protected it for three months ;-) TFOWR 09:00, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Could you give me some diffs to show me your mistake? Also, did you correct the mistake? If you did, please give me a diff for that too. /HeyMid (contributions) 11:55, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Here's the full horror! I'm not sure if my mistake made it as far as WP:RFPP - I suspect it was when I was logging the protection at RFPP that I realised my error, and fixed it. I've not checked RFPP's history, though, so I could be wrong. TFOWR 12:02, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Yeah. Expiring on July 7, 2010, is clearly only 3 days, but you actually originally protected it for 3 months to October 4, 2010. /HeyMid (contributions) 16:31, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Other way round, and to confuse things I didn't update the pp tag... have done so now. I protected it for 3 days, tagged it as such, then protected it for 3 months. I think I've completely fixed it now...! TFOWR 16:40, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
