Dispute

[edit]

Should be discussed in the talk page. I have restored the spelling that source used. If you still Have disagreement you are free to raise the issue on The talk page. don't edit war. Regards. --DBigXray 08:58, 24 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Moved from User talk:DBigXray
The first source is WRONG, (that's why I changed it!) but the second is correct. I am a retired professional proofreader. If you're not sure about something e.g. spelling, do a Google search before jumping to conclusions. Now they are both wrong, instead of none, after my change/s. Editrite! (talk) 09:39, 24 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
how can you call it wrong when Cambridge dictionary uses the spelling that I had added. --DBigXray 10:05, 24 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently, the reference you have found believe it to be optional, as you have seen. I have seen others that say "convener", which is technically more correct, since convene is the verb and you just add an "r" to form the noun,(which makes more sense) instead of changing the spelling. Anyway, all's well that ends well, as I see someone else has changed it back. Editrite! (talk) 22:20, 24 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I can argue on the merits of convenor too, but I refuse to. Since both are correct. It was nice talking to you. regards.--DBigXray 06:02, 25 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Kobayashi was also a nine-time world runner-up. I was counting the right table, but the wrong column. Pretty dumb of me, but not as dumb as confusing Japan with Earth. Anyway, just clearing that up. I'm curious to know why you removed my addition. It's factually correct and was the only cited example of his work in his later years. Michael Schlesinger aka Cadavra8Cadavra8 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 04:47, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think you've messaged the wrong editor. All I did, was delete one word "with" in the Personal life section, and changed one other word "of" in the Film and television career section, both grammar issues, which were mistakenly reverted by another editor anyway. Thanks for you note. Belated as my seeing it is, you are correct, I made a mistake in the name. It should be Mary Virginia Ahern, or Mary V. Ahern. How can this be corrected? _ _ _ _ 83d40m (talk) 08:50, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Do you not remember how you created the article in the first place? Editrite! (talk) 09:15, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I remember how I created the article. I have corrected the text, but am not sure of how to change a title. I guess you do not know either. Perhaps, I should create an article with the correct name and use a "move" to make the correction, I will try that. _ _ _ _ 83d40m (talk) 13:27, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I stumbled through it, making another mistake before discovering the correct method, however. Saw a note that a bot will clean up behind me, so perhaps it all will be ironed out correctly. Greatly appreciate the WP bots! Thanks again. _ _ _ _ 83d40m (talk) 14:34, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Where did you find reference to Nancy McCredie's death? I can't find anything backing that up. -- Zanimum (talk) 10:58, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message. I spend much of my time sorting out inconsistencies in Wiki articles. In this case, someone had changed the info box but not the text to match. I normally check that any change is properly sourced, but in my hurry may not have. Since you messaged me, I too have had trouble finding sources, apart from Dead People which I believe is not reliable. There is also Olympedia, which I usually find is reliable. However, if you are not comfortable with that, or you know otherwise, I'm happy if you want to change it back. Editrite! (talk) 01:29, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The section you asked about was not referenced, and an article supposed to be on the Main page has to have everything referenced. The German Wikipedia, from where it was translated, seems to be less strict. I removed it altogether. You can bring it back with an independent reference if you find one, - I have enough concerns already. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:42, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please be careful with runner-ups vs runners-up when used for tallying

[edit]

While runners-up is correct when talking about multiple runners in an event, it is not correct when tallying the number of runner-up trophies won. It is proper to use runner-ups in that case. Thanks. Fyunck(click) (talk) 00:44, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I see you did it again with Kateřina Siniaková. Please be careful when there are not multiple runners. Fyunck(click) (talk) 06:37, 16 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We've been down this road before. It has been made clear to you that your reasoning is flawed. The plural of runner up is runners up NOT runner ups. The second paragraph of this article has the correct version (not edited by me, which you haven't changed) and the tables have been amended accordingly for consistency. As I've said before, if you don't know what you're doing then you shouldn't be editing. . . by the way, why is this topic not in chronological order like the others. Editrite! This is a message to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions, such as the edit you made to Mark Philippoussis, did not appear to be constructive and have been reverted. Please take some time to familiarise yourself with our policies and guidelines. You can find information about these at our welcome page which also provides further information about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. If you only meant to make test edits, please use your sandbox for that. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you may leave a message on my talk page. I have told you on your talk page about different uses of runner-up. This was discussed with the people at Oxford English dictionary. When tallying the number of runner-up finishes it would properly be runner-ups. When talking about a number of people in a race it would be runners-up. Please don't make changes when they are already correct. Thanks Fyunck(click) (talk) 00:51, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Johnnie Jones's mother: "Mulatto"?

[edit]

Assuming I've used the edit history search tool correctly, you made an addition to the page on civil rights activist Johnnie Jones on April 23 in which you referred to his mother as a "mulatto." Did you have a specific reason for using that word? No matter what the norms may have been during the lifetimes of Jones's parents, it's considered a racist today, so I changed it to "mixed-race." If you can explain your reasoning for using the word, I'll change it back. --JDspeeder1 (talk) 13:14, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I saw this edit and was wondering where 68 came from. Looking at the archived version of the source (#4) I count 57, but maybe there is an update? Canadian Paul 20:57, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the query. Firstly, the source that you have referred to, actually lists 64 Canadians not 57. Although most of the entries specify Canada,
there are several that only specify "CA" in red to distinguish from "CA" in black (California). I note that there are also quite a few N/A's (not available), and maybe some of them account for the difference. However, I will look back to see if I can find the source that specifically mentioned 68. Hey @Editrite!, I'm writing to let you know that while your edit was ultimately shown to be correct, you made two mistakes along the way:

a) you provided no supporting reference, and any editor is fully entitled to revert or remove unreferenced content. The onus is on you to support the inclusion of new content, not on other editors to fact-check your work.
b) you were a jerk to me in your edit summary. You could have left it at "Updated based on his death on May 4 (see Deaths in 2024 and infobox)." without adding the snarky "Check your facts first, in future." By that metric, I should tell you to "check WP policy in future", or "try to assume good faith and be nice to other editors". Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 02:57, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Boud. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions have been undone because they did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Teahouse or the Help desk. Thanks. This was your unconstructive edit. If you have a source to disagree with the current information on the subject's career, then add the source and integrate the new information, or start a talk page section if the sources disagree.

Regarding constructions of the form Joe Bloggs was appointed as minister, the word as is perfectly correct. This is primarily a matter of style (though "as" helps with clarity): you should not impose your own choice of style to a whole series of articles, unless a consensus already exists for you to do so. Boud (talk) 19:04, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I wanted to let you know that your recent (reverted) edits to this article were anything but constructive, and should not have been made. I note that you created this article three and a half years ago and should know better. Unless you have a time machine and can go back in time, the sic edit was entirely appropriate if you actually READ what it says i.e. period of years immediately before. Though it's true that the source is at fault, that should have been picked up and corrected at the time. On the subject of "appointed as", if you do a Google search (online dictionaries) of the use of appointed in a sentence, you will find that is not the case. Your assertion "though as helps with clarity" is quite frankly laughable. Appointed without as has more than enough clarity and is more precise. There is also the question of consistency within the same article, where both forms are used instead of only one (if you truly believed what you said). Finally, I have made many edits over the years and it's safe to say that they have ALL been constructive. Editrite! (talk) 09:48, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
