Newspapers.com check-in
Hello Connormah,
You are receiving this message because you have a one-year subscription to Newspapers.com through the Wikipedia Library. This is a brief update, to remind you about that access:
- Please make sure that you can still log in to your Newspapers.com account. If you are having trouble let me know.
- Remember, if you find this source useful for your Wikipedia work, to include citations with links on Wikipedia. Links to partner resources are one of the few ways we can demonstrate usage and demand for accounts to our partners. The greater the linkage, the greater the likelihood a useful partnership will be renewed. Also, keep in mind that part of Newspapers.com is open access via the clipping function. Clippings allow you to identify particular articles, extract them from the original full sheet newspaper, and share them through unique URLs. Wikipedia users who click on a clipping link in your citation list will be able to access that particular article, and the full page of the paper if they come from the clipping, without needing to subscribe to Newspapers.com. For more information about how to use clippings, see http://www.newspapers.com/basics/#h-clips .
- Do you write unusual articles using this partner's sources? Did access to this source create new opportunities for you in the Wikipedia community? If you have a unique story to share about your contributions, let me know and we can set up an opportunity for you to write a blog post about your work with one of our partner's resources.
Finally, we would greatly appreciate it if you filled out this short survey. Your input will help us to facilitate this particular partnership, and to discover what other partnerships and services the Wikipedia Library can offer.

Gertrude Ederle
Hey, Connormah, would you mind diverting your considerable internet research skills from college football for a brief while? I need to get a definitive birth date for Gertrude Ederle, who was a medalist swimmer at the 1924 Olympics in Paris. I've got multiple reliable sources that say she was born in either 1905 or 1906 -- do you have access to Social Security death records through one of the services? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 21:46, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Dirtlawyer1: - I checked the SSDI and it gives 1905. Connormah (talk) 23:02, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
- SSDI shows Ederle's birth date as October 23, 1905? Is there anything we can link to -- or reference? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:08, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Dirtlawyer1: - Here's the link: [1]. Yep, it's Oct. 23, 1905. Connormah (talk) 00:18, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

Greetings... and possible hoax
Greetings Connormah. Sorry for reverting yours at Raymond Carr... but as I have yet to find a single English-language reference to his death, I'm investigating the possibility of a hoax started over at es:wp, where the "news" seems to have originated long before anything appeared in the Spanish press. Regards, --Technopat (talk) 13:00, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Technopat: - hm, interesting. I think the statements in the English article are enough for me, but I'm of course interested if you can find anything suggesting a hoax. Connormah (talk) 13:14, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
- It's obviously hard to prove a hoax and failing any English-language references, I have today sent off emails to a couple of institutions related to Carr to see if the news can be confirmed or simply ignored. Regards, --Technopat (talk) 13:40, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
- Update: The news has been confirmed & I have restored the previous version of the article... and added a reference. Regards, --Technopat (talk) 13:48, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Canadian date formats, etc.
Connormah, is it accurate to say that MDY-formatted dates are the mainstream practice in Canada? I am starting to clean up the 200 articles about Canadian Olympic swimmers, and I would like to use Canadian English and related practices for them. Unfortunately, it seems to be a mixed bag in terms of the date formats presently used, and many of these articles aren't internally consistent in their date formats. Some of them don't even have infoboxes, so this is an opportunity to impose some consistency/uniformity in stylistic matters. Looking for sound advice how to proceed, so I can get it right the first time. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 19:34, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Dirtlawyer1: - yep, it's pretty much a mixed bag as you say. Personally I feel like the MDY format is more common in Canada (or at least where I live) but there are others who argue for the DMY format. Honestly, it's best to retain whatever style is present in the article, but I'd vouch for the MDY format personally. Connormah (talk) 19:37, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
- Okay. If a particular article is consistently formatted one way or the other, I will maintain the pre-existing date format. If an article is mixed in its usage, I will err on the side of MDY. You'll back me up, eh? : ) Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 19:42, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
Medallist or medalist in Canadian English? I thought it tracked Australian usage, but now I see the categories are using "medalist" -- is that correct? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 12:30, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Dirtlawyer1: - honestly didn't know there was a difference, haha. I usually use "medalist" though but I honestly didn't know that "medallist" was a thing. Connormah (talk) 18:19, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
- The Brits, the Australians, and apparently most other Commonwealth countries, spell the word with two l's. Canadian English, for obvious reasons of North American proximity to the States, continues to split the difference between American and British English in a lot of ways, and it can be a challenge to keep it sorted. What do you use for a Canadian English dictionary -- is there anything definitive online? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 19:11, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
- FWIW, I tend to use "medallist", though US-based auto-correct tools are going to rapidly alter that usage. And FWIW, my experience is that common date format usage in English Canada is almost exclusively MDY. Resolute 19:18, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for that, Resolute. In editing 60 of the Canadian Olympic swimmer articles so far, all but two of those that used DMY were Canadians who swam for the University of Florida -- and I was responsible for inserting the DMY-format dates in those articles previously. Live and learn. Any suggestions for a Canadian online dictionary? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 19:26, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

Connormah, if you're looking for a little light relief and an opportunity to put your research skills to work, here's a potential outlet: George Larson. Larson clearly was an interesting guy with an interesting history in Canadian sports. I did some quick clean-up on the article, but it deserves better build-out and sourcing. Charles Benton year of birth
Your revert's Edit summary "Nothing states 1931 outright..." evidently ignores the preceding revert's Edit summary (mine): "...1931 already cited in Refs [1] from benton.org" AND this is why I reverted again. Kindly check for yourself, I took care that the reference includes a link to that page, "Who we are" on the Benton Foundation's website benton.org. It would be great if you (or any contributor) would find and add a citation with a complete DOB (date of birth) rather than just the year, as I didn't succeed in finding any obituary or older source giving his exact birthdate. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 14:28, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Deborahjay: - if you could point to where the ref states 1931 that'd be great. I could not find it, hence the change I made. Connormah (talk) 22:57, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Connormah:, you observed correctly - I'd used the wrong link as the first Ref for year of birth (I'd intended the home page of benton.org). Thanks for completing the information there. -- Deborahjay (talk) 16:59, 3 May 2015 (UTC)

Donald MacKeen Smith
Hi Connor, can you take a quick look at Donald MacKeen Smith article. I just added the info on the first 7 years of political career which was missing from article, so I had to change the intro a bit to show 1960 to 1970 as term dates. You had added two references to google books, but I can't figure out what there supposed to be sourcing, so can you check and see if they should be put back in the article, or where they should be added. Thanks. Cmr08 (talk) 21:02, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Cmr08: - Can't remember specifically, but it's probably the DOB they were sourcing. Connormah (talk) 21:45, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

Not sure - can you show me a couple? Then I can take a look and see what's going on. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:31, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, AWB adds it automatically. And I'm not wild about the wording on the tag, because it's not completely correct - AWB identifies as "orphaned" any article with fewer that four, maybe, or five inter-encyclopedia links. So even though the articles in question are linked to one or two other articles, AWB is saying that isn't enough.
- I don't really care one way or the other - I'll disable it if you like. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:37, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

- It's one of my take-it-or-leave-it tags; I don't mind it, exactly, and it has its uses, but I'm not too broken up if someone chooses not to use it. I get its point, but I'm not that concerned, as long as the article itself is in good shape. Replaceable fair use File:Chick Doak.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Chick Doak.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. SCMatt33 (talk) 04:08, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
I see you've changed the copyright tag on the image to "PD-US-no notice," but it appears that page 5 of the digitized yearbook you linked as the source does claim copyright. Is this not enough to be a legit copyright? I'm not trying to badger you about the photo, but wanted to know because if most yearbooks from 1923-1977 would fall under public domain because of this, it could be a huge boon to adding media to university and college sports pages.SCMatt33 (talk) 15:07, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

- @Connormah: - No problem. Thanks for the help. SCMatt33 (talk) 22:39, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

Licensing of Washington State House / Senate Photos
Hi,
I saw that you added https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SKirby.jpg with a link to the Washington Secretary of State website as justification for the public domain status. I tried to add those official photos to state legislators' pages several years ago, but was told that I couldn't assume public domain and had to use OTRS. Then, when I contacted the Washington State Legislative Information Center via email regarding the OTRS, they said "Yes, the pictures can be used. We would like credit for the photos." The email correspondence never got anywhere but clearly, at least according to this correspondence, the photos may not be public domain. I would appreciate your take on this.
Thanks. TheCascadian 06:13, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
Also, I just noticed that you're a member of the OTRS team, so I would especially appreciate your input on this. TheCascadian 17:06, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

Dick Van Patten
Are you kidding Me? What's the problem with noting that actor Dick Van Patten has died, because he died today? There should be no problem. Talk
- As such, it should only be used in cases where many editors (perhaps dozens or more) are editing the article on the same day, and it should be removed as soon as the editing goes down to a normal level again. Do not use it merely to tag the article of a recently deceased person, as that would defeat the template's purpose. Connormah (talk) 17:13, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
Ernest Manning pic
Hi, sorry to bother but I just wanted to query you on something. A few weeks ago you replaced the infobox picture for Ernest Manning, and I really just want to find out why you think the new one is more appropriate. See, my thinking is that an infobox picture should really show the subject from a period of peak notability - in this case, from when Manning was premier as opposed to just starting out as an MLA. Furthermore, though this is a secondary argument, aesthetically I rather think the original picture looks better, as Manning is posing directly into the camera, and the corners have not been cropped out. Look forward to your reply. Redverton (talk) 21:21, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
- @Redverton: - my main line of thinking was that this one is of better quality than the other one (it has scanning artifacts, is less sharp). However, I suppose I wouldn't be opposed to bumping it down in his article and reinstating the old one. Connormah (talk) 01:10, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

- Well, for one, I did send an email as well, and got the same response as you. The OTRS ticket seems to confirm that the Washington Archives photos are in the PD. A bit more clarification would probably be helpful, but I personally think these images should be okay for use here. Perhaps copyrighted freeuse (or whatever that's called) and not PD. Jim Weaver
I was avoiding saying that he died "from" Parkinson's because the article doesn't say that was the actual cause of death. I'm sure that's probably the case, but the article doesn't specifically say (and I'm assuming they don't know for sure yet). --B (talk) 15:48, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. I tried something else. I'm not really a fan of the "battle" wording as I think it seems a tad bit unencyclopedic, honestly... Connormah (talk) 15:50, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- What do you think about the article title? Nobody calls him "James C. Weaver" - he always went by "Jim Weaver" and all of the media reports of him always call him "Jim Weaver". When I originally created it, I named it Jim Weaver (athletics director). I looked at James Weaver and the ones listed as "James" really go by "James" (or went by James). The ones who go or went by Jim are all named "Jim Weaver (something)". --B (talk) 16:07, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- @B: That sounds good to me. I agree that Jim seems to be his common name. Connormah (talk) 21:00, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- I have moved it. I looked it up and apparently I was mistaken about "athletics director" (plural) being the more common term. His formal title was "director of athletics", but apparently athletic director is the preferred spelling when phrased conversationally. G-news says "athletic director" far more than it says the full title ("director of athletics") and almost never uses "athletics director". So I went with Jim Weaver (athletic director).--B (talk) 22:36, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Your removal of the current events tag from Charon (moon) did not make any sense. Your edit summary quoted an additional reason people might use the tag, one that you correctly noticed does not apply to this article. But the tag wasn't there for the sake of that additional reason, but for other reasons. I have restored the tag, slightly amplifying it. Choor monster (talk) 11:51, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
Martin Litchfield West article
Hello. I removed the last sentence of the opening which you put into the Martin Litchfield West article. That Dr. West has died is stated twice already in the top of the article: in the opening, birth/death dates, and in the infobox person. So I deleted the sentence which I felt was superfluous. And sometimes line breaks are useful. If there's an issue with this, we can, I'm sure, work it out amicably. Best. --- Wikiklrsc (talk) 19:39, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
- Per the MOS, this is normal, really. I think it just seems that way because the article is brief and not really organized in a biographical manner. Connormah (talk) 21:42, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
- I must be missing something. Been editing Wikipedia formally with my Editor ID since January 2005, but I'm unsure what "per the MOS" means. I must be missing something really important. Sorry. Ah, "Manual of Style" perhaps? Also, that was a really brief "discussion" before you reverted it back to what you put in before with some changes. Fair enough. Jean Ritchie: "WP:OVERCITE"
ConnorMah: I was the culprit on adding numerous citations to the Jean Ritchie entry for her obituary, which I believe you edited (indicated by View History) and marked up "Holy shit....WP:OVERCITE much?" I added as many citations as I could because "folk singers" has political ramifications in the US and so intended that as many voices as possible appeared when summarizing her life in obituaries. My thinking is that Wiki-readers need to know more than less. Also, the numerous citations indicate the impact of her life (albeit in death) and so help create a sense of importance. Respectfully -- Aboudaqn (talk) 19:31, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Aboudaqn: - though I could have expressed it better, I think my point still stands. There's no way that 12 citations are needed to verify one non-controversial statement. It gives a cluttered and unprofessional appearance (you'd never see something like that in any printed works). We're not a link dump. Connormah (talk) 21:20, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

Missing, presumed dead . . .
Connormah, can you use some of your genealogy and public records resources to see if you can find DOB, DOD, POB and POD for Fred Kahele, full name Frederick K. Kahele? He was a 1920 U.S. Olympic swimmer of apparent Hawaiian background, with some connection to the U.S. Navy. If you have some luck with Kahele, I have several other Olympic swimmers from Hawaii who are also missing DOD and POD, including a couple of medalists. Let me know. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 15:48, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Dirtlawyer1: - sorry - nothing really on Kahele except a possible census entry of him being born in 1901. Nothing to connect him to the Olympian though. I can try my luck with the others though. Connormah (talk) 06:05, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
- Well, if you've got a 1901 birth date for a "Frederick Kehele" or "Fred Kahele," that is something. He would be the right age to be a 1920 Olympian. I will get you the list of the others. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 10:43, 25 July 2015 (UTC)

Al Meltzer's residence and other ambiguous links
Thanks for creating the Al Meltzer article. It seems like a good contribution. I notice it because I am working with wp:DPL on eliminating ambiguous links, and the new article includes a link to Newtown, Pennsylvania, a disambiguation page. Could you possibly be more specific in your link (and perhaps footnote your source for the residence location)? I expect you know which Newtown is correct but I do not. A fun tool to use in addressing disambiguation, by the way, is the DabSolver tool. Here is DabSolver tool applied to the Al Meltzer article. All you need to do is click on the "Newtown, Pennsylvania" link that is identified as being ambiguous, then it leads you to select easily which one of the dab-page alternatives is correct. (Hopefully the correct alternative is offered.) Also by the way you are currently editor #52, with 5 total, in this report of editors who have added multiple ambiguous links recently. And that report offers "FIX" links that are similar calls to the DabSolver tool, which you could possibly use to fix more. (Actually your rank will change as I just fixed another dablink added by you, at the Bill Flick article, linking to the ice hockey option of Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen disambiguation page.) Whether you can help or not about this, thanks for your contributions and keep up the good work! cheers, --doncram 12:23, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
Chris Hyndman
I just wanted to let you know that I've applied a revision-delete to one of the edits you made to Chris Hyndman's article yesterday. You didn't do anything wrong, I assure you — but the person who edited the article immediately before that particular edit of yours had added information that violated the personal privacy rights of Hyndman's still-living husband, which didn't get reverted until the edit after yours. So I revdelled your edit solely to help suppress the edit before it, and just wanted to assure you that it's not about anything you did. Bearcat (talk) 21:46, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Bennett Campbell
Hi Connor, I noticed that you had cleaned up some political infoboxes that were quite large. Anyways, I just tracked down references to source the Bennett Campbell article, and the infobox is massive there. It's the entire length of the screen, meaning there is a huge whitespace between the external links and the bottom of the page. If you get a chance, could check this one and see if anything can be done about it, I wouldn't know where to start. And there may very well be nothing wrong with it, but to me, it seems to take away from the article, and I figure it's worth taking a look. Thanks. Cmr08 (talk) 04:25, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi Connor, I just noticed this now, but it appears you have gotten the blame for edits I made to the Bill Black (politician) article.[5]. I don't know how the editor thought you had something to do with editing, as according to article history, you have never edited that article or had any contact with the editor accusing you of reverting his edits. It's not like are usernames are similar except for both starting with C, so how he mixed is up is beyond me. Being blamed for something you didn't do isn't nice, so I figured I would leave this just so you know what's going on. Cmr08 (talk) 20:20, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

On 8 November 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Vern Miller, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in 1971, Kansas Attorney General Vern Miller participated in an undercover drug raid by hiding in a trunk of a car in order to make arrests? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Vern Miller. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

Hey Connormah, Szapsel Rotholc apparently died in 1996 in Montreal. Do you have any resources that could help locate a full date of death? Canadian Paul 23:44, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Canadian Paul: - hm, did he go by the same name in Canada? I could try and look for an obit and in some other sources. Connormah (talk) 00:48, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
- Oops, I forgot to add the link I was planning on using. He also went by Stanislaw Rotholc. I did a standard search and could not find anything, but I thought you may have access to something different (like that Quebec Death Index). Canadian Paul 23:33, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Requesting your help on a surname spelling
Connormah, it has come to my attention that you are a user who is pretty good, and loves a mystery, at finding out the surnames of people through SS death records. There is a discussion at Talk:Charles Erickson as to whether or not he and Dee Errikson are the same person. You can look at the discussion for the links as to why they are believed to be the same person, and the last name is giving us trouble. Would you be willing to help us figure out the correct spelling for this guy? Thanks! 🎄 Corkythehornetfan 🎄 20:02, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
- Connormah, I'm the guilty party who fingered you as our Social Security death records "expert". Sorry about that. I would be grateful if you would look into the Erickson/Errikson case, and see what you can find when you have time. Cheers. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 20:05, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
- I'll take a look into it. At first glance I'd say that they are probably the same person. Too many things line up for it to be merely a coincidence. Connormah (talk) 22:53, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for November 26
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Henry Smith (Canadian politician), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Kingston. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Proposed deletion of Nels J. Smith
The article Nels J. Smith has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- very short BLP, and poorly sourced with no value to be included in an encyclopedia.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. DaeafcMnnC (talk) 11:06, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

Two things...
Hey Connormah, I have a couple of questions for ya. The first one is: can you upload the horizontal logo for Northern Arizona University? It'll fit, and look, better in the infobox. The second question is have you found (or had the chance) to look for Dee Errikson (Charles Erickson) to see if they are the same person? If not, no worries. I was just curious. Thanks. 🎄 Corkythehornetfan 🎄 21:51, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
- @Corkythehornetfan: - which horizontal one are you referring to? Connormah (talk) 22:42, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry, Logo 1 or Logo 2. You choice. 🎄 Corkythehornetfan 🎄 23:04, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
