Question:

[edit]

INRE: your summary used at the reversion,[1] where may I find the spot where "generally acceptable exceptions" are specifically listed? And would you not think the embolding of the word "not" acts to dismiss those rare exceptions encouraged by policy and guideline, and thus makes an interpretation of "never allows" possible as an interpretation at odds with policy? Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 21:36, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies. I was looking at something else at the time I wrote the edit summary; there are no "generally acceptable exceptions" that are "specifically listed." I do, however, support NFF in its current version and I do think that any changes to it should be discussed and agreed upon since it is quoted very very regularly at AfD. It wouldn't be fair to make a unilateral change to an often quoted and highly relevant guideline and then blind-side an AfD contributor who quotes NFF in a debate but has no idea that he's quoting something incorrect because it's been changed. That includes the bold formatting of "not". Big Bird (talkcontribs) 13:53, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah... then my confusion was understandable (chuckle). My thought here, in considering that out of our many many thousands of film articles, is that we do have some 4 or 5 that have made it through AFD gauntlets to be accepted through consensus as representing those very rare rare rare exceptions to NFF. I am not lobbying that NFF be removed or relaxed... only that it be clarified to properly remind non-film folks that just as we are advised that essays should not be treated as guidelines, as a guideline NFF should not be treated as if it were a policy nor be treated as if it were an ironclad absolute... and that, as with any guideline, rare exceptions (such as those 4 or 5) are indeed allowed. And can you point me to the discusion where it was decided to embolden that word "not"? It seems to me that such emboldening acts to make guideline into a seeming over-ruling absolute that it is not supposed to be. I am reminded of WP:POLCON and its advising on how to treat seeming conflicts between policy and guideline, and how advice pages should offer multiple options when dealing with perceived conflicts between them. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 20:14, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My opinion that the exceptions are too rare to need to be specifically listed; we can deal with them on an individual basis. Maybe it's a good idea to bring your proposal at the guideline's talk page or WT:FILM for discussion? Big Bird (talkcontribs) 19:25, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, and will formulate a proposal, as it is just that the combative nature of the AFDs dealing with those rare exceptions, sometimes becomes too much the battleground. What would you think of our doing some rework at Wikipedia:WikiProject Film/Future films? Seems just the place to deal with concerns over application of the terse and unforgiving NFF. My own effort WP:TOOSOON is used quite a bit in deletion discussions to indicate that something needs to ripen more before it can be an article. Perhaps if we can direct editors away from the terseness of WP:NF and let them see the issue addressed in more clarity and detail at WP:FUTFILM, we may just reduce the battles some. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 06:28, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, an article needs to pass a notability threshold before it can make it to Future Films. Hence, if it fails NF and NFF there's nothing to be discussed at FF. I'd suggest to bring up the issue at WT:NF and notify the crowd at WT:FILM to join the discussion. I, personally, still believe NFF to be appropriate in its current form but that may be only because I haven't yet been presented with a better option. That's how things work with me in real life too, I never know what I'll like until I actually see it :) Big Bird (talkcontribs) 13:43, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Meet the Parents

[edit]

On behalf of WP:CHICAGO, I would like to note my appreciation for your effort to raise the quality of the Meet the Parents article.

--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 20:03, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I saw a need for this article and so I wrote it. But the article could benefit from expansion and further sourcing. As you are listed at the WikiProject Film/Canadian cinema task force, perhaps you might care to help out? Expanding on the school's programs? Listing the awards its presented (and recipients)? How other media in Canada recognize the intitute and its efforts? Thanks, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 07:24, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up! I checked the article and it looks like a decent start. As I mentioned in my email to you the other day, I'm probably only going to be able to work on Wikipedia sporadically at best for the next undetermined length of time due to WP:Real Life issues. But, when I get some time, I will definitely look into this and see what I can add.

Good question

[edit]

I predict your critical question at Talk:Colombiana (film) will be ignored because of this: User:Born2cycle/Status_quo_stonewalling#Ignoring_good_faith_questions. --Born2cycle (talk) 19:57, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate the comment that mine was a good question, thank you. I won't be too upset if it's not answered, it's not that big of a deal. If the involved editors are about to start digging their trenches (which might be possible on both sides) I think the best idea may be for all of us to ease up on the issue rather than push harder. Status quo is sometimes quite arbitrary, as perhaps it is in this case, but it's what we have when we can't reach consensus. Good or bad, it is what it is. Big Bird (talkcontribs) 20:22, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects are fine... but rather than hope someone in the future decides to build upon a redirect, I took it upon myself to do some digging and build upon what tokyogirl79 began. I am not pleased that the nominator felt 60 seconds was enough time for the author to complete his article. Just how much diligence does 60 seconds really allow? Admittedly it took me all of 10 minutes to do some digging and improving... but to me, that's what WP:BEFORE, WP:WIP and WP:ATD are all about. It may always be a short article, but I believe it has enough now to remain and serve our readers... and perhaps even be expanded more in the future... but stubs are not a crime. Best, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 20:05, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I saw what you and User:Tokyogirl79 did on the article and I find it very commendable. As promised in my initial rationale, I have changed my !vote to keep as a result. Nice work so far!
I must say, however, and you may not agree but your AfD rationale reads quote abrasive and unnecessarily preachy. I don't think anyone, let alone an administrator, should lose their cool and proceed to verbal bashing of another editor, especially when the editor on the receiving end acted in good faith. If the nominator didn't know something, teach him like you would a student without yelling ("STRONG Keep") or taking their lack of knowledge personally ("I am quite unhappy"). Big Bird (talkcontribs) 20:23, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fair statement, and I'll strike and modify. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 20:27, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate the gesture of modifying your comments, thank you.
With regards to the film, I see that you changed the lead sentence to identify the film as "Lawful Cheaters (aka The Lawful Cheater)...". I think "The Lawful Cheater, sometimes known as Lawful Cheaters..." might be more appropriate since sources identifying it as The Lawful Cheater seem to easily outnumber those identifying it as Lawful Cheaters. What do you think? Big Bird (talkcontribs) 20:54, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done. :) Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 22:44, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I first looked up Lake Okeechobee in Wiki because I heard it in a popular song, and wanted to learn something more about it. That makes the song references relevant to this article. Webster defines "relevant" as: "...logically connected with and important to the matter in hand". On 4/12/12, you removed all popular song references, presumably due to vandalism. Should you not remove all TV/Movie references as well, since they're just another medium, after all ? Why don't you just remove the "Popular Culture" category all together, if it's so offensive ? I believe the educational value has been lowered by removing the links to popular songs which mention Lake Okeechobee. Ghostrdr (talk) 19:26, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You might wish to look at WP:IPC, but I believe the prevailing wisdom is that popular culture references should not be listed unless they include a third-party source that establishes their significance in some manner. I'd be happy to look at the article or diffs in question if you think that would help, but I'd also note that Big Bird is under no obligation to delete material; conversely, the fact that material hasn't been deleted doesn't mean it is appropriate for inclusion. Hope this helps. Doniago (talk) 19:50, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Chow Bella

[edit]

The article Chow Bella has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Seriously non notable film. Googled in an attempt to expand. Only related hit was IMDB entry though there is a sixteen minute short by the same name! The two references didn't even come up in Google. Turns out link one is dead link. So I giess it is unverifiable as well.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
