Features for new users coming soon (and mentors, like you, wanted!)
Hello. As you're currently a host at the Teahouse, I wanted to make sure you're aware of the imminent rollout of new Growth Team Features which every new account will be getting by default. Each users will soon see a new 'Homepage' tab next to their User page. It contains two main elements which might impact on your involvement - and you'd be welcome to get involved and help out directly with one of them.
- Firstly, they will be offered a range of 'suggested edits', and encouraged to make simple improvements to pages that interest them. (Being aware of this feature would be helpful for all Teahouse hosts if you're likely to offer advice on tasks for them to start out doing.)
- There's also a 'Your impact' box to show them how many people have seen the pages they've just edited.
- Finally, each new user is randomly assigned a 'mentor' from a list of friendly, experienced editors, like yourself. If they get stuck, they can ask a question directly to them via a Your mentor box, and hopefully get a swift, friendly answer from that mentor. Currently, this feature is given to 2% of new users, but it's set to increase to around 10% in the very near future.
To spread the load on our current list of around 65 mentors, I'm reaching out to ask if you'd like to help out and sign up as one? The workload is relatively small; User:Panini! reports receiving four questions a month, on average, all of which were simple ones of the type we already get at the Teahouse and elsewhere, and I've had just the one in the last 3 weeks. To view a list of every question asked of all mentors over the last 14 days, click here.
If becoming a mentor and helping new users on their first few days here interests you - just as you already do at the Teahouse - then please consider signing up at Growth Team features/Mentor list. Existing users can already 'opt-in' to seeing the Newcomer Homepage features via their Preferences.

RE:Template reason
Hi, I didn't think to bring them up on the talk page but responses there are usually slow. My rationale is:
- Article cites only one government data source, sparsely (failing WP:1R)
- Unlike the Mayor of Greater Manchester as a whole, insufficient sourcing is available
- I can't foresee a scenario were the topic becomes WP:Notable or gains sufficient coverage outside the government data site
- WP isn't an indiscriminate collection of information)
Thank you. -- CalSmith2 (talk) 19:49, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi CalSmith2, I don't know a specific guideline for political offices but I definitely think this is notable. You could take the article to Wikipedia:AFD if you want, and I could help you with that also, but I definitely think the result would be keep. Sorry for the delay also. Rubbish computer Ping me or leave a message on my talk page 17:42, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
No problem, I added a WP:PROD tag to the top of the page but its been removed, apparently not an "uncontroversial" nomination.
What's the next course of action? I really want to stress my above points to anyone concerned. -- CalSmith2 (talk) 00:14, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi CalSmith2, I don't know many of the ins and outs of this particular topic but I think it's very unlikely that this subject won't be found to be notable. You can take the article to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion if you want to, but I definitely think it will be kept. Otherwise I would mention it at the talk page, perhaps pinging those involved for input. As it's a request for deletion that some people have objected to, AfD would be better for it. I don't know 100 percent what I should ask you to do; you can take it to AfD if you want, but I genuinely believe it will be kept, and I feel I should let you know that beforehand. Rubbish computer Ping me or leave a message on my talk page 19:55, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, I understand but would still like to make the case for deletion. I've looked at AfD but found all the instructions a bit overwhelming, would you mind telling me the basic necessary steps to nominate it here please? -- CalSmith2 (talk) 00:03, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

From my talk page "It was absolutely not a mistake, it was a grammatical edit. The original page used the phrase "Gerolstein a fictional Grand Duchy in Jacques Offenbach's comic opera La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein.", and that was the version you incorrectly reverted it to. My edit replaced the "if" with "in", because Gerolstein is not a "possibility", it is a fictional place within La Grande-Duchesse de Gerolstein. New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022
Hello Alextejthompson,
At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.
Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.
In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 812 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 846 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.
This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.
If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Question from Aiateg (12:01, 30 May 2022)
When will this post be publish on Wikipedia. --Aiateg (talk) 12:01, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Aiateg, you can submit User:Aiateg/sandbox at Wikipedia:Articles for creation for it to be reviewed. However, I don't think it would yet be accepted. Wikipedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and need to show that the subject of the article is notable through significant coverage in reliable sources. It's very daunting to a lot of new users. The page Wikipedia:My first article may help. Also, reviewing drafts can take months; there's usually a large backlog. Hope this helps, Rubbish computer Ping me or leave a message on my talk page 18:06, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
St. Marys GAA
There are many articles on different GAA clubs. While many are on the larger clubs, the small clubs are the backbone of the organization. They may not win as much as the big ones, but still are very important. I think if you review the GAA and hos it is structured, you will see this. I therefore feel that the article should not be deleted. Pmunited (talk) 01:09, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Pmunited, I don't dispute the clubs are important but I don't think this club is notable enough for a Wikipedia article. I will keep an eye on the discussion. Rubbish computer Ping me or leave a message on my talk page 08:48, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
Question from HaynesBebop (14:16, 31 May 2022)
Hello, sorry to bother you.
I was looking to add a required source to the page about record producer Martin Hannet. However, while looking through another article sourced in the page, I found that many of the paragraphs were exactly the same (word for word) as the Wikipedia page. I’ve included both the article and the page itself, in which the first paragraph and, “Early life portion,” are particularly uniform.
Wikipedia page: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Hannett
Article (sourced in page): https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/manchester-entrepreneurs-martin-hannett-ian-brookes
I’m not quite sure what to do about the required sources, and to be honest the similarities. I’m trying to be a good help, and knowing about situations like these would help immensely.
Thank you kindly. --HaynesBebop (talk) 14:16, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hi HaynesBebop, most likely someone has copied from the imdb page into the Wikipedia article. Imdb is copyrighted so any copied content will need to be removed. This section is helpful: Wikipedia:Copyright_violations#Parts_of_article_violate_copyright. I find dealing with copyright complicated even after all these years at times. As the section outlines, I would remove any content and link the imdb page in an edit summary. Add {{subst:Cclean|url=the imdb url}} in its place and possibly leave a note on the talk page too. An admin can delete the copyrighted content from the article's history if needed. I can also do this for you or help collaborate with you if it's a lot to take in. You can also link articles [[like this]] Cheers, Rubbish computer Ping me or leave a message on my talk page 14:24, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- If you wouldn’t mind helping me collaborate on this, it would be greatly appreciated. I understand how to delete the portions that are from the article, as well as giving the source in the edit. The part that confuses me is that I would have to delete almost the entire first portion of the page, as well as the entire, “Early life,” section. The sections aren’t from IMDB, but I found the same paragraphs on several different articles.Thank you so much for the clarification. HaynesBebop (talk) 14:30, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, they shouldn't really be duplicated in different articles but as long as they're not copied from somewhere else it's not a copyright violation. HaynesBebop Rubbish computer Ping me or leave a message on my talk page 14:33, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

The sections aren’t from IMDB, but I found the same paragraphs on several different articles.Thank you so much for the clarification. HaynesBebop (talk) 14:30, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
I’m so sorry, I said that incorrectly. I found the paragraphs that were in the Wikipedia page in several different sources from different websites. Notably from the LinkedIn article I sent previously. HaynesBebop (talk) 14:35, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hi HaynesBebop, no need to be sorry. If it's been copied from another website onto Wikipedia it should probably be removed. I'll look over the page shortly and see if I can find a copyvio-free earlier version to change it back to. I keep having computer issues also, I think because of the thunderstorms in my area; I may lose power but hopefully not. This is a complicated area of Wikipedia for s new user to be involved in and you're doing well. Rubbish computer Ping me or leave a message on my talk page 15:05, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

Question from Ramontsho (15:03, 7 June 2022)
Hello how do I upload a picture --Ramontsho (talk) 15:03, 7 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Ramontsho, you can learn more about this at Wikipedia:Uploading images. Special:Upload will talk you through it when you're ready; make sure to either upload your own work or not break copyright rules, which you can read more about at Wikipedia:Uploading images. Images are usually more useful when uploaded to Commons, as other projects can then use them. There's more information here, [1]. Hope this helps, Rubbish computer (Ping me or leave a message on my talk page) 15:13, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022
Hello Alextejthompson,
- Backlog status
At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.
Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]
In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).
While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).
- Backlog drive
A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.
- TIP – New school articles
Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.
- Misc
There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}
, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:
Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 14123 articles, as of 20:00, 14 December 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot
There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.
- Reminders
- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
- If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing
{{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page. - If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Pudukottai temples
A tag has been placed on Category:Pudukottai temples indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022
Hello Alextejthompson,
- Backlog status
After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.
Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.
- Coordination
- MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
- Open letter to the WMF
- The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
- TIP - Reviewing by subject
- Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
- New reviewers
- The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
- Reminders
- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
- If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing
{{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page. - If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list.
