Marlis Jermutus is a German abstract expressionist artist, musician and author.
Life and work
[edit]Marlis Jermutus, also known simply as Ma, was born in the West German town of Wesel, Niederrhein in 1942. In her autobiography, she writes that her father, unsympathetic to the Nazis, was sent to the Russian front days after her birth. Her mother and siblings were sent by the German government to work on a farm in the East German town of Lüderitz. Her father lost his life on the Russian front, and in 1949 Marlis’ family fled East Germany and returned to a 97% destroyed Wesel struggling with reconstruction. [1] Documenting her memories of pre and post war Germany, instances of sexual abuse, and her struggle to break free of the societal restrictions of a working class identity, she writes of embracing the 1960’s counterculture, advocating for a revolution in consciousness, and becoming friends with counterculture icons Timothy Leary and Robert Anton Wilson. She began her professional career as an artist in 1970. She studied visual art intuitively and with the guidance of the German portrait artist Rigo. She writes in her autobiography that a strong influence for her among German artists creating art in the aftermath of WWII was her neighbor in the Niederrhein region Joseph Beuys. As a casualty of The War On Some Drugs, [25] she spent three years in prison in Berlin, West Germany from 1982 to 1985. During that time she was twice given special permission to attend openings of her art work painted in prison. She attended the first event, in 1983 at Buecherei Weigel in Berlin with a prison guard accompanying her the entire time. The second opening was at the Move Studios gallery in Berlin. A week before her scheduled release, she was given a pardon, eliminating parole, by the Minister of Justice, Berlin. [26] [3]
In 1991 she was asked to be the Artistic Director for the World Religion Festival “The Power of Vision,“ commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall, Berlin-Potsdam. [27] [3]
She is currently living in America, painting and exhibiting her art in California, as well as playing the Tanpura with the music group Starseed.[28] [29]Her autobiography, From Now to Now, was published in 2011, by Pelorian Digital. [3]
