Personal details

[edit]

I have excellent grammar and spelling skills (writing in the small), not so good on organization and layout (writing in the large), and substantial expertise on computers. I do some light correction as I come across bad pages and contribute to sections that don't reflect what I know.

I give Wikipedia $100 every year.

Work pages

Great background vocalist B.J. Nelson deserves a page, I started a work page at subpage /B.J. Nelson

MIDI

[edit]

Zounds! MIDI files now directly work in MediaWiki/Wikipedia!

MIDI TODO

[edit]
  • Rewrite Help:Media_(MIDI)  Done
  • Update mw:Extension:Score to deprecate the "override_audio", "override_ogg" (obsolete synonynm for it), and "override_midi" parameters.  Done
  • Update mw:Extension:TimedMediaHandler that it supports MIDI files! as of June 2019  Done
    • Add MIDI to the TMH extension's description that appears on Special:Version.
  • Update en:Help:Score to reflect that "vorbis" has been deprecated for a while
    • but: insource:/score sound=\"1\"/ down to only a few dozen still with vorbis="1".
  • Fix pages with obsolete midi="1"  Done
  • Mention the online LilyPond editors: (WYSIWYG online editor https://www.scorio.com/, split code and preview editor https://www.hacklily.org/, on various WP help pages.
  • check out score errors and warnings in Special:TrackingCategories
  • Is it a bug that {{audio}} generates a Media: wikilink so that the MIDI file doesn't play unless you have browser support? How can it produce a a simplified inline player for MIDI like the one for .ogg files? now I can't reproduce this in Firefox, the little inline play triangle for both doesn't play inline but goes to the file.
  • work on I–V–vi–IV_progression
  • VideoJS player bugs:
    • TODO: could you actually use the "add captions" feature of the [CC] icon in the VidoJS audio player to add captions to a MIDI file? If not, then the [CC] shouldn't appear for MIDI files.
    • Some files play inline, e.g. but others have a modal play mode, e.g. .
    • Why does clicking the (i) icon in the above File:Amour.mid example go to a File:Null file?
  • Does the new video player (VideoJS replacing Kaltura, see Beta features) preference) affect audio playback?
  • BUG: the audio player under a generated score overlaps the treble clef. (known bug with Kaltura player)
  • BUG: https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-Score/blob/master/modules/ve-score/ve.ui.MWScoreInspector.js should prefer audio=1 parameter to deprecated vorbis=1, but support both.
  • Use the claimed software on Help:Media_(MIDI) that turns MIDI back into score to turn the Brahms and Boogie-woogie examples back into score.
    • See phab:T201641 "Transcribe music on Wikipedia to LilyPond"
  • See if there's a music project on en-wiki to work on this sort of stuff.
    • Reach out to Ebe, TheDJ?
  • The Mutopia Project has lots of scores in Lilypond format, e.g. /OTuChInnanziMorte under CC licenses, could they be imported?
  • Why does Firefox on Android download a .rtx file when you click play on the above MIDI files?
  • Add MIDI to the score for each instrument's range, setting the MIDI instrument to that instrument. E.g. Trombone's File:Trombone range.svg (maybe for trombone, add portamento MIDI CC setting!).

MIDI tests

Various forms of a wikilink to a MIDI file:

Here's the {{listen}} template:

Score issues

[edit]

On desktop modules/ext.score.popup/popup.js adds a click handler that on a score image shows a popup mw-ext-score-popup mw-ext-score-popup-open" that shows a link to "Download MIDI". This isn't available on mobile (it lacks "target": "mobile"). Does this matter?

Semantic MediaWiki

[edit]

I paid a lot of attention to the m:Semantic MediaWiki project and around version 0.4 joined as a developer, then more tester/writer/supporter. Check it out at http://semantic-mediawiki.org. This extension provides an easy way to add machine-readable "facts" to wiki pages, so you can query things like "Show the population and area of every country in Asia". It's a huge deal, wikia enabled the extension on some wikis. It's too heavyweight for Wikipedia, but Wikimedia is looking to implement something related, Wikidata.

If you need help sharing and organizing information within your company, you should contact me! I've worked with "Knowledge Bases" (Lotus Notes, Verity search of internal, technotes, Kanisa, etc.) for years and MediaWiki Semantic MediaWiki is the best real-world implementation there is. My expertise, a spare PC, some excellent free software, and suddenly you've got the best information portal there is.

One Laptop Per Child

[edit]

I bought an OLPC XO-1 laptop in their Give One Get One program in December 2007, started fixing http://wiki.laptop.org, testing builds, etc. By a happy coincidence OLPC installed olpc:Semantic MediaWiki, so I helped the project use semantic features to track deployments, releases, test cases, etc.

Tests

[edit]

T39895 test, look for pe=1 , did gerrit I6ffb2e4357f52e9d4243676a1e83d1bfe29a87ab show up? what about new Gerrit?

Date of 2006-04-05 , does it get localized based on my prefs?

And 15 May, 2006 does not get recognized.

See my analysis of "transclusion parameters" on mw:User:Skierpage
