“Welcome to Bordertown” is the second story in the 5th anthology in the Borderland series. This story was written by Terri Windling, one of the original editors of the Borderland series, and Ellen Kushner, one of the editors of the Welcome to Bordertown anthology.

Characters

  • Trish, a 17 year old high school graduate that experiences the heartbreak of being rejected from their dream university. She runs away from home to find her utopian fantasy world only to stumble into a place that is anything but: Bordertown. She’s a romantic wrapped up in her dreams that it takes a few reality checks from her friends to get her to see the limitless opportunities that were available to her back home.
  • Jimmy, also known as Mr. Fix-It in Bordertown, is Trish’s brother who was 6 when Trish left home and 19 when he set off to find her again in Bordertown. During the years of Trish’s absence, Jimmy as a 6 year old had to bear the brunt of his family’s tension.
  • Anush (Gurgi), a Harvard graduate student who traveled to Bordertown to study the sex lives of the Elven people. He gets himself in a pickle when he oversteps his boundaries in questioning his Elven lovers sexual past. So naturally her answer is to turn him into a beast during the night as a form of punishment.

Summary

Trish, a high school student is rejected from her dream university so she runs away to the magical world of Bordertown hoping for utopian dream land. But while Trish is in Bordertown for 13 days, 13 years pass in the World. Her younger, well technically now older brother, Jimmy sets out to find her and bring her home. They both meet a colorful cast of characters while in Bordertown that help shape their ultimate decision: Should I stay or go back home?
