User:PNG crusade bot
Appearance
This user account is a bot operated by Remember the dot (talk). It is used to make repetitive automated or semi-automated edits that would be extremely tedious to do manually, in accordance with the bot policy. This bot does not yet have the approval of the community, or approval has been withdrawn or expired, and therefore shouldn't be making edits that appear to be unassisted except in the operator's or its own user and user talk space. Administrators: if this bot is making edits that appear to be unassisted to pages not in the operator's or its own userspace, please block it. |
- This bot automatically converts images on the English Wikipedia to the more efficient PNG format. Only images that would see a decrease in file size are automatically converted.
- This bot is NOT so that you can be lazy and upload images in the wrong format for them to be converted later! Images uploaded by this bot will have its name as the uploader instead of yours, so you may not be notified if there is a problem with the image, such as being nominated for deletion.
- Please leave comments on my talk page.
- If you want this bot to automatically convert an image, please understand that by doing so, this bot will be listed as the uploader instead of you. Thus, you may not be notified if your image is nominated for deletion. If you still want this bot to convert the image, tag the image with {{ShouldBePNG}}. Even though this bot can process images from other categories, I plan to primarily run it only on images tagged with {{ShouldBePNG}}.
- Due to the trivial nature of image description pages, it is probably not necessary to preserve their revision history. But just to be sure, this bot preserves it anyway.

[edit]- The source code has again been updated. Since the code is no longer contained in a single file, the code is available as a Base64-encoded ZIP file. —Remember the dot (talk) 01:27, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- The source code is now up-to-date. Many improvements have been made. For example, this bot now uses PNGOUT, which tends to produce smaller file sizes than the optiping advpng combination. —Remember the dot (talk) 04:54, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
- As recommended at Wikipedia:Preparing images for upload#PNG tips, this bot now uses both the
optipng -o7
andadvpng -z4
commands to achieve even smaller PNG file sizes. The latest release also copies image talk pages from the old image to the new image. —Remember the dot (t) 06:39, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
- I further expanded this bot's functions to process Category:Images with inappropriate JPEG compression. —Remember the dot (t) 02:05, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- I am expanding this bot's functions to process Category:Images with inappropriate GIF compression in addition to its original target, Category:Images which should be in PNG format. ---Remember the dot 19:34, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
- This bot now uses the
pngcrush -brute
command to achieve very small PNG file sizes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Remember the dot (talk • contribs) 5:10, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
