Hindi interwikis from WikiProject India 27/March/2012
[edit]I've scanned all 100k articles of WP India and about 6% of them have interwiki links to the Hindi Wikipedia. I've then analyses those Hindi pages in various ways, looking for articles that have pictures or content that is missing from the English articles, or where the interwiki links are broken in some way. Since I don't know Hindi I can only do the analysis, but hopefully someone can take this further.
The first thing is to look for Hindi articles that have images when the original English article doesn't. I've split out the 37 English articles tagged as High/Mid priority, followed by the 303 low/unassessed ones. Then there's 173 articles where English has some images, but Hindi has more. As you'll see below, the nature of interwiki links may mean that the images on hi.wiki aren't appropriate for use on en.wiki, but in many cases they will be - as long as they are on Commons or the licensing allows them to be put on Commons.
Next I looked for Hindi pages which may be able to help English pages with text. I scanned for Hindi articles that were at least 10% longer than their English equivalents and had at least 3 ref tags (as a basic quality filter). That gave me 102 articles which are listed below - a quarter of them are at least 10kb longer than the English versions.
Finally I scanned the Hindi pages for interwiki links back to English. In most cases the circle is complete, you end up where you started. But in about 80 cases I did not detect a working interwiki link in the Hindi page, and in 130 articles the Hindi page was pointing to a different article on en.wiki than I started with. Some of these will be trivial redirects, some of them will be the result of different articles being available on the two wikis, at least at the time they were written. So for instance hi.wiki might only have an article on a town, whereas en.wiki has articles on both the town and its district, so both the English articles will point to the Hindi "town" article which will in turn point to the "town" article in English. That's OK - but it's worth checking to see if there is now a "district" article on hi.wiki, even if it didn't exist at the time the interwiki was first made. Some of the interwikis will be just plain wrong - for instance, Sonepur, Bihar ends up in the Sonepur article which is the one in Orissa.
So could people go through these lists and check out the interwiki links, seeing that they are a) appropriate and b) if there's a better article on hi.wiki for en.wiki to link to? And for the second list, adding an interwiki back to en.wiki? (which won't necessarily be the en.wiki article listed here).
When you've checked out article(s), can you either delete them from this list or use the <s> and </s> tags either side of a link to strike it through??
I must emphasise these lists have been generated completely automatically and there will be cases where you just have to skip the article for some reason, but hopefully these lists will be useful. FlagSteward (talk) 00:34, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
