Stewards & Checkusers: I typically must use a VPN, so my source IP rotates frequently and could be one of many countries. This is why I require global-IPBE. Most of the time, there will be traffic on my IPs that is not me. To prevent issues, I hereby grant permission to run checkuser on my IP/this account (or those of my alts) out of process and without my prior permission. My primary alt (mobile), User:Farmer Brown has IPBE at enwp only. I also have the alt User:Pharmboy, which was my original name when I joined, and I recaptured when my account was moved to my real name. I use multiple user agents. My time zone is 8 UTC/Philippines Standard Time.

To say that I am constantly disgusted with the WMF is an understatement.

My philosophy

One of the most influential and profound things I have ever read at Wikipedia is found on the user page of my friend and mentor DGG:

I do not attempt to convert my opponents--I aim at converting their audience.

While I have yet to master this skill, it is my goal. In deletion and policy discussions, it is helpful to not bludgeon others or dilute their opinions. It reminds me that it isn't necessary to convince every person as we are a consensus community.

The most important person at Wikipedia is the reader. Everyone else is secondary. Everything we do should be to give that reader an experience that is free from bias, propaganda and rumor. Accuracy is more important that completeness.

“I'd far rather be happy than right any day." - Douglas Adams

"My patience is formidable.... But it is not infinite." - Scorpius (Farscape)

Who I am

My real name is Dennis Brown. I was born in the 1960s. I'm an American who has lived in 7 US states over the years, and has visited about half of all US states. I moved to the Philippines in 2023. I'm semi-retired and work part time for a (non-notable) business I founded years ago in the ultraviolet industry. I sometimes edit articles related to UV but not in a way that benefits me. I avoid editing in contentious topics, and instead I focus on gnome-like cleaning up and shepherding of core articles. I like editing automobile related articles and food articles, and some local culture topics, and expect to update many of our articles relating to the Philippines, my new home, as time allows. I also try to do my share of admin tasks in many areas, to reduce the load for everyone. I played guitar (and other instruments) in small local bands for years. I like fishing, camping, walking/hiking, traveling, and other ordinary things. I'm moderately active on Wikipedia, but often absent for many days at a time.

Accountability

I started editing as a registered user on Sept. 6, 2006, although I had edited unregistered some time before that. I became an administrator on April 25, 2012.

Admin are free to revert or modify any admin action that I have taken if it is to better the encyclopedia and not likely to be controversial, ie: it is not likely I would argue against it. No prior permission is needed, but I do request a note afterwards.

For the purpose of security, I have two alternate accounts that I use. User:Farmer Brown is my alternate account when I'm on a mobile device. User:Pharmboy is an alternate that is seldom used. Very rarely, I may have to edit as an IP, but due to VPN usage, that IP is never consistent.

Barnstars

Transluded from User talk:Dennis Brown/stars. Warning, large page.

Welcome to the Ronco Barnstar Vault. I place all my barnstars here for safe keeping.

2006-2011

(will move here later)

April 2012 on

I didn't start archiving barnstars until I became an admin, in April of 2012, and decided to archive them here. I appreciate the respect and thought that goes into each one. These are now also found in the archives with replies and thanks to the giver. - Dennis Brown

I'm sorry for the distraction, I noticed you on different discussions awhile back and was following your RfA, I was sad the las time I had checked it, but it appears the community logic prevails. I feel bad about bombarding you with Barnstars, but this piece of advice is something every editor should read and live by.

One of the most important things to remember is this: When dealing with a "bad doer", be it a sockpuppet, vandal or edit warrior, you have to remain calm. Cool. Collected. If you ramp up the drama, you make it more likely that they will retaliate even more, so now you have more vandalism, more socks, more problems, and (sigh..) more work. Failure to handle a situation in a calm manner leads to more problems, more drama.

The Admin's Barnstar
I was a little sad and somewhat disconcerted to see your comment on Jimbo's talk page regarding "being chased away" from Wikipedia. I sincerely hope that you don't let anything chase you away from our project here - you are one of the top administrators we have, and our community needs much more of your calm voice of reason, not less. I hope work allows you to edit more regularly in the future. Thanks for all you have done, and thanks in advance for all I am sure you will do here. -- Go Phightins! 18:39, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
The Purple Star The Purple Star
I regret to say that I just today noticed the rather lengthy discussion at WT:AC, and what you have been put through lately. I assume the Arbs have some sort of reason, and that maybe, in some way, they think they might have indicated it to you. That still may not make it right, though, and I sincerely hope that this brouhaha gets resolved as soon as possible. And that you can, eventually, hope to forget about this mess. This is a hugely important matter, but that also makes it one which we can't allow to cost us good independent editors and admins like yourself. John Carter (talk) 21:22, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

I am glad you are back and wielding a mop once again; we have missed your reason over the past few months. Thanks for all you do around the encyclopedia. Go Phightins! 10:36, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

reading, waiting, then judging
Thank you for living what you advise, "reading it, waiting 24 hours, then judging", for defending editors who are hurt, for practising mentorship, - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

The Working Man's Barnstar
After doing some work on many of the other noticeboards, some of which were a ghost town, I came to ANI to find that every issue had been resolved, closed in an orderly fashion, much to the credit of Mr. Brown. It is such a rare sight to see everything look so orderly, and a tireless barnstar is definitely warranted for being on the ball in one of Wikipedia's less desirable work-loads. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CorporateM (talkcontribs)

Dennis, there isn't a day that I don't see your name in some capacity on Wikipedia. Your time and expertise is very valuable here and I just wanted to stop for a moment to say that you (and your wide variety of contributions) are very appreciated. MJ94 (talk) 01:11, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

Sometimes having to wade through the arguments at ANI and elsewhere is honestly asking for more time and/or effort of someone than most people would really feel comfortable asking others to to. The ANI discussion you just commented on is one of those times. Thank you for having read through the whole damn thing, which I know full well is something only someone truly dedicated to the project and its goals would ever be likely to do. I'm sorry to see that you are another editor who has reached this decision because of the WMF's action. It's sad to see our community tear itself in two over this, and with no concrete response from the WMF in two weeks, unfortunately I don't think you'll be the last to make an exit. - SchroCat (talk) 19:43, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for creating the article on the new Western Electric company. I think that it is significant that this company has built the first new vacuum tube factory in the Unites States in over half a century. That should come as a joy to musicians and music lovers around the world. Thank you for bringing attention to it. Garagepunk66 (talk) 23:56, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
