Oak Tree Village
The Oak Tree Village in Davis, California is a secluded community that is currently under construction (2006). It is a community based in trees and surrounding land whose inhabitants share common views and goals. So far the society is underdeveloped, but groups of non-profit workers are striving to successfully build the community into a thriving, self-sufficient living commune. At this point, the Oak Tree Village consists of two tree-huts, neither of which is fully completed, and a large, permanent teepee. All the establishments in place are made earth-friendly. This means that the materials used do not harm the land and are environmentally safe. The area in which the village is being built is a prime section of land for self-sufficient living. The soil is rich with nutrients for growing crops, and there is a large irrigation ditch that runs through the center of the development, providing water for crops. This water supply can also serve as drinking water, once the water filter system is in place. There are wild chickens that live on the property that thrive without any help from humans. These chickens can produce eggs and occasionally meat for the inhabitants of the Oak Tree Village. This village’s development is well underway and will soon be ready for living.
The people of the Oak Tree Village
The inhabitants and creators of the Oak Tree Village share common beliefs about the world and living. They are a peace-loving group and believe in the love for life. The inhabitants also somewhat outcast themselves from the average form of living and governmental systems. There is no official system of order in place at the Oak Tree Village, but if anything it is a combination of communal living and peaceful anarchy. The people that can be found at the Oak Tree are definitely a distinctive crowd that is separate from the regular business-oriented people. There are only very small and select groups that gather at the Oak Tree, as it is not commonly known and in the interest of keeping too many people out of the Village, its exact location is kept a secret to the general public. The people are not likely to reject many people that are able to find the Oak Tree Village as long as they share somewhat similar ideas and interests.
Location and land
The Oak Tree Village is located in the far western part of Davis, California. It is on the border between two farming fields, one of which is used as a corn maze. This location is perfect for the sheltered style of living that the Oak Tree inhabitants strive for. It is out of the way and secluded from the main parts of the city. There is an irrigation ditch that runs through the property and provides all the water needs for the commune. The soil is rich and good for growing crops, which need little help from the inhabitants due to the almost constant water supply that keeps the land fertile.

Events and uses
The Oak Tree Village is the perfect place for gatherings, meetings, small festivals, and other small events. There are occasional drum circles and fire pits that take place at the northern tree and fire pit. There has been a history of many different groups having separate, and at times together, meetings and gatherings that take place in the sheltered and remote area. The Oak Tree Village is sometimes interpreted as a place to use illicit drugs, but this is a common misconception. Although there are those who may use this area to take drugs, it is not the overall intent of the Village and the creators are unable to prohibit these events because there are no rules in place and no punishment system.
Plans for the future
As the Oak Tree Village continues to expand, so does its popularity. There are many frequent visitors and newcomers. The goal of the Village is not to grow large and take up much space, but to become self-sufficient and be able to live off of the resources that are provided. The area in which the Oak Tree is found is a prime selection for this aspiration and one day soon this objective will hopefully be reached. The inhabitants are open and welcoming to any newcomers as long as they share similar beliefs and are willing to contribute to the bettering of the community. Only those dedicated enough to find the Oak Tree Village will be able to reside there.
