The Student Room website and mobile app, often abbreviated to TSR,[1][2] is a discussion based community for school and university students in the United Kingdom. It receives over 6 million visits per month[3], has had 75 million posts from 5 million members,[4] and is commonly referred to as the UK’s largest online student community.[5][6][7]
Discussion on The Student Room is typically about study help, choosing a university, careers and broader student life conversations.[8]
UK universities often have official student representatives answering questions and creating content on the forums.[9][10]
The site has a dedicated area where the Government of the United Kingdom's body for the official student loans system, Student Finance England, respond to students' questions on student finance.[11]
The Student Room is run by a number of volunteer and staff teams, and the volunteer clearing & application advisors are trained by UCAS, the United Kingdom's official undergraduate admission service.[12]
History
[edit]The Student Room forum, and now eponymous UK limited company, was first created in around 2001 under its original name UK Learning.[13] It was founded by a student, Charles Delingpole[14] as a website where students at, or applying to university could talk to, and help each other. The UK Learning name was changed to The Student Room in late 2004.[15]
Nick Clegg, the former Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and then Leader of the Liberal Democrats (UK) answered questions from students on The Student Room in the 2010 UK General Election campaign.[16]
In 2010, Lord Browne (John Browne, Baron Browne of Madingley) took part in a live Q&A on The Student Room as part of the Browne Review on UK student finance, to defend the increase in the cap on student tuition fees.[17]
In 2014, The Student Room hosted a forum on apprenticeships and traineeships for the Parliament of the United Kingdom's Education Select Committee to help them understand students' views of careers guidance in schools, and students' opinions on apprenticeships.[18]
In 2016 Secretary of State for Education Justine Greening answered students’ questions on The Student Room about grammar schools, exams, tuition fees, mental health and sex education.[19]
In 2016, Mary Curnock Cook CBE, the former Chief Executive of UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service), joined The Student Room Group Board as a Non-Executive Director.[20]
Department for Education research in 2017 stated that The Student Room was “the most popular [online] source” for learners making HE decisions.[21]
In 2018, TSR published research in partnership with Revolt Sexual Assault, a national campaign against sexual violence in UK universities, showing that almost two thirds of students and graduates have experienced sexual violence at UK universities.[22][23]
In 2020, The Student Room acquired the Which? University website, from the UK consumer advocacy group Which?[24][25] and began to join it up with the main TSR website.
The Uni Guide contains articles and advice on the university application process, as well as searchable guides to UK universities and courses. These guides use data and statistics from a variety of sources[26] including the Higher Education Statistics Agency, UCAS, and the National Student Survey.
