Tofaş (acronym for Türk Otomobil Fabrikası Anonim Şirketi; Turkish Automobile Factory Joint-Stock Company pronounced [tofaʃ]) is a Turkish automobile manufacturer which was established in 1968 by Vehbi Koç, who was the founder of Koç Holding, based in Bursa, where the manufacturing plant of the company is located. It is jointly owned by Stellantis and Koç Holding (37.8% of the company's shares belong to Stellantis (through Fiat Group Automobiles); 37.8% to Koç Holding; and 24.3% freefloat).[1]

Tofaş manufactures both passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. It is one of the biggest automakers in the sector, with its 7,000 employees and 450,000 vehicles annual production capacity. Tofaş manufactures for the Fiat, Citroën, Peugeot, Opel, Vauxhall and RAM brands in Bursa, which has achieved for it the “Gold Level” within the scope of the WCM-World Class Manufacturing Program that is implemented in the 175 plants within the framework of Stellantis.[2]

Tofaş plays a leading role in Turkish automotive sector; it conducts sales and after sales operations for the Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Jeep, Ferrari, and Maserati brands in Turkey.[3]

Tofaş exported 160,000 units to 80 countries in 2013. It also recorded 7 billion TL net sales income and 434 million TL net profit. Fulfilling 22% of the total production in Turkey with its 240,000 units in the previous year, Tofaş achieved 1.6 billion euro export income by increasing its export volume by 4%.[4]

The first Fiat Linea was designed and produced in the Tofaş Fiat factory in Bursa, which remains the model's primary production plant for the EU market.

  • 1968 — Tofaş is founded.
  • 1969 — the foundation of the company’s production plant is laid in Bursa.
  • 1971 — the first Tofaş model is announced to be the Fiat 124 produced under license from Fiat and locally named Murat 124 (with a later version named as Serçe). The first motorsports team is also established.
  • 1973 — OPAR is founded, a product line which focuses on the sale of spare parts for many vehicles.
  • 1974 — Tofaş Sport Club is established.
  • 1975 — by commencing export to Egypt, Tofaş starts exporting their vehicles to the first market outside of Turkey .
  • 1976 — the Murat 131 model starts production.
  • 1981 — production of the Kartal and Doğan models commences.
  • 1990 — the Tempra enters production.
  • 1994 — the Tofaş Uno enters production.
  • 1994 — Tofaş R&D is established.
  • 1995 — exports of the Tempra model was started.

  • 1999 — The Marea and Brava enter production.
  • 2000 — the Doblò enters production.
  • 2000 — the Tofaş Basketball Volunteer Project is established.

  • 2001 — Tofaş negotiates a deal with Alfa Romeo, with Alfa now producing cars in the Tofaş factory.
  • 2002 — the Albea enters production.
  • 2003 — Tofaş Museum on Cars in Anatolia (Tofaş Anadolu Arabaları Müzesi) opens its doors.
  • 2005 — Tofaş becomes the official distributor of Ferrari and Maserati vehicles in Turkey and Fer Mas (acronym for Ferrari and Maserati) is founded for this purpose.
  • 2006 — exports of the Palio and Albea to Russia commence.
  • 2007 — official distribution rights for Lancia was attained.
  • 2007 — the Minicargo project was completed and launched as the Fiat Fiorino. The vehicle was also sold to PSA as Peugeot Bipper and Citroën Nemo, marking the first time in Tofaş history that the rights to one of their cars are sold.
  • 2009 — the Albea Sole enters production.
  • 2009 — Tofaş S.K. win promotion to the Turkish Basketball Super League
  • 2012 — Jeep joins forces with Tofaş in Turkey, as a result of the merger between Fiat and Chrysler
  • 2012 — Tofaş has now produced 4 million vehicles since its inception
  • 2013 — Opar and Magneti Marelli join forces for the sale of automobile parts in Turkey
  • 2013 — the production plant in Bursa achieves the WCM “Gold Level”.
  • 2014 — the new 'Tofaş Academy' building is opened.
  • 2014 — Tofaş Science High School is established.
  • 2023 — it is announced that commercial activities for all Stellantis brands are to be consolidated under Tofaş.[5]
