More detailed navboxes

[edit]

Hello, all, a while ago, I expanded this navbox to make it comprehensive; however, I now believe it's unwieldy, especially as the headings have been removed. The navbox also fails to capture demolished buildings in Edinburgh and adding these would only make the navobx larger.

I therefore propose that this navbox be kept for reference while being replaced in articles by the following relevant navboxes with proposed headings:

  • Culture and leisure facilities in Edinburgh
    • Cinemas
    • Performance venues
    • Museums and galleries
    • Sport
    • Libraries
    • Former
  • Monuments in Edinburgh
  • Health and care facilities in Edinburgh
    • Current
    • Former
  • Education in Edinburgh
    • State Schools
      • Primary
      • Secondary
    • Independent Schools
    • Tertiary education
    • Former
  • Religious sites in Edinburgh
    • Church of Scotland
    • Episcopal
    • Roman Catholic
    • Other Christian
    • Other religions
    • Former
      • Extant
      • Demolished or ruined
  • Residential buildings in Edinburgh
    • Houses
    • Flats
    • Former
  • Commercial buildings in Edinburgh
    • Hospitality
    • Retail
    • Industry
  • Bridges in Edinburgh (could perhaps be included in the transport navbox)

Stations are already well-covered by Template:Rail transport in Edinburgh and Template:Transport in Edinburgh.

Discussion is most welcome. If I haven't heard back with a month (ie, by 11 August 2022), I'll proceed with these changes. I'd also welcome users' thoughts on creating these new navboxes then bundling them under a Template:Navbox with collapsible groups.

Sounds good to me. I'm no expert on navboxes btw. KaraLG84 (talk) 20:31, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This sounds like a very sensible way forward to me CPClegg and I would be happy to support it. As I see it, your suggestion retains the useful links you and others have put together, while, at the same time, avoiding making things to cluttered. Dunarc (talk) 20:35, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for giving this your attention. I totally agree, it's a crazy size now! Yes, you could take out some particular things like railway stations, and schools could be spun off into a separate navbox. I feel this navbox should really be focussing on architecturally or historically significant buildings, not every primary school or bus shelter in the city. Collapsible groups is also really good way to go too. Cnbrb (talk) 08:52, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, all, thanks for discussing this topic. It's taken me a while to get round to it but you'll see I've trimmed back the current navbox to main sites. Meanwhile, I've created or expanded the following navboxes to cover these topics:
Schools were covered by Template:Schools in Edinburgh already. I have expanded Template:Transport in Edinburgh to include all stations and infrastructure previously mentioned in the "Buildings and structures" navbox. Higher education articles were all covered by Template:University of Edinburgh, except Craiglockhart Hydropathic, which is now listed as a former commercial building.
I would be very grateful for edits to improve these boxes and am open to discussions about whether any of these should be split up, merged, or scrapped. Finally, I would be very grateful if editors had the time to add the new navboxes to relevant pages, removing the "Buildings and structures" navbox where appropriate.CPClegg (talk) 21:33, 29 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
