Inspiration for fictional Vidiian Phage

[edit]

In addition to the stated inspiration for the fictional Vidiian Phage in the article, Observations of their mutilated bodies and decaying bodies, the shunning of the sick by the healthy, and the relative temporal relationship to the multitudes of bubonic plagues which had swept through the Old World (pre-Colombian Western Eurasia) I would suggest that this “Phage” describes aspects of leprosy as well. I would also raise the suggestion that an allegorical relationship with HIV/AIDS exists, some examples being how individuals diagnosed with it sometimes experienced almost leper like shunning and other social difficulties many individuals experienced around the time prior to and during the filming of “Star Trek: Voyager.” I possess no evidence of this, however it does seem to make sense, and the Star Trek franchise also seems to have a propensity of shining an uncomfortable light on difficult social issues of the period [in which it was filmed] through their creative approach to the shows’ storylines.
