. Vorher hatte Bismarck in der Innenstadt gewohnt, mußte dort aber wegziehen, wegen ungebührigem Verhalten. Longbow4u 22:17, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Frog's ...uhm.. weenie

[edit]

Is there any credibility to the name "frog's penis"? for the leaning tower by the SUB? I lived in Goe from before the edifice's erection until last year and never heard that epithet. More interesting would be a short discussion of the pink bicycle that was mounted on it. Kdammers 01:45, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the "frog's penis" caption. The real name is "Raumskulptur" (translates a spacial sculpture). I'll take a snap of the sign next time I'm down on campus. The pink bicycle was (is) mounted in a pole 100m nort of the sculpture. --Dschwen 10:50, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Originally, the bike was on the Raumskulptur, presumably put up by some students in a Nacht-und-Nebel" action. The powers that be (the sculptor?) objected, so the bike got mounted at the more subdued location. Kdammers 05:20, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

404

[edit]

I get a 404 error when I click on The "Göttingen Nobel prize wonder"; the 44 Nobel prize laureates affiliated with Göttingen.

Fixed the link, works now. --Dschwen 10:46, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Latin inscription

[edit]

The legend under the seal puts "Universitas" in the correct nominative case, but leaves the adjectives in the genitive (as they appear on the seal, since they refer to "sigillum".) Please fix! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.127.168.217 (talkcontribs) 22:07, 14 December 2006.

Done, however the text currently reads "Universitas Regia Georgia Augusta". If I remember myself correctly you must choose to use either u or v (just like with i and j). Our two alternatives therefore become
  • Uniuersitas Regia Georgia Augusta, or
  • Vniversitas Regia Georgia Avgvsta.
I would like to get input on this from people who know Latin better than I.
HymylyT@C 17:35, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That might in some contexts be the case, as it seems that was not the case in 1737, it is Universitas Regiae Georgiae Augustae (using both u and v), and means University (ie."Society") of the estate (ie. Hanover, or figuratively the Royal Court) of |Georg (August) of Britain and Hanover. That's why the rest remains in genitive (feminine), even when "sigillum"/Seal is not mentioned. (Universitas regiæ Georgiæ Augustæ->sigillum universitatis regiæ Georgiæ Augustæ). However, the uni is often called simply "Georgia Augusta" by its students, which is a personification and is nominative case since it has no noun to refer to. Search for "augusta" in this German pdf file to see the Latin alternatives.FlammingoParliament 18:11, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Sorry about that. I should've checked the facts first. I forgot regia could also mean estate/palace. (I figured it was feminine nominative of the adjective regius, making it "royal university" or something...) HymylyT@C 17:54, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Logo of forest.gif

[edit]

Image:Logo of forest.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

"The most kisses in the world"

[edit]

I just removed this from the traditions section:

The Gänseliesel is probably the girl who has received the most kisses in the world.

That's highly debatable, and 100% unsourced. Funny, though. Thomas1617 (talk) 02:12, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The image File:Seal of law.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

"Napoleon had even studied law here"

[edit]

I can find no evidence whatsoever that Napoleon studied at Göttingen, and it seems (frankly) a very far-fetched claim. The only reference I can find to any connection between Napoleon and the University is that "Laplace urged the bellicose Napoleon Bonaparte to spare Göttingen entirely because of Gauss' presence there.": see [1] Morrisqc (talk) 03:48, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"students such as Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich, later diplomat and prime minister of Austria"

[edit]

This would also seem to be a furphy: Metternich never studied at Gottingen. See[2]. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Morrisqc (talkcontribs) 03:58, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

social science and economics faculties

[edit]

i hate to break it to u guys, but the images for these two faculties are of the (from the right) the library, a buildings for seminars (which is used by all faculties), and the law building. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.135.138.225 (talk) 21:51, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Associated research institutions

[edit]

The Max Planck Institutes are mentioned twice in the section Current Status. Once in the subsection "associated institutions" and once in "Research". I would recommend removing the research part as it provides no additional information. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.76.62.65 (talk) 19:57, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How many founders?

[edit]

This article says:

Founded in 1734 by King George II of Great Britain and the Elector of Hanover,

This makes it sound as if there were two founders. But wasn't the Elector of Hanover in fact the same person as King George II of Great Britain? Michael Hardy (talk) 04:23, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lemma

[edit]

Dear friends, the official English name of Georg-August-Universiät Göttingen ist "Georg-August-Universiät Göttingen", not "Georg-August University Göttingen". University of Göttingen is completely colloquial and ill chosen as there are two other universities in Göttingen. Best regards, --Trinitrix (talk) 01:10, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Post-WWII history

[edit]

There should be more than one item for the half century. For example, should the recent brouhaha over Sascha Spoun being offered and then denied the presidency (https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2019/09/12/university-göttingen-loses-president-protest) be included? And what about the new natural science campus and the new library (and the library's role in international library co-operation)? Kdammers (talk) 08:03, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
