I removed "Küpuale Äina" from the ship's motto. Those words (even without quotes) return zero (0) Google hits, so I'm asking for (a) a citation, and (b) a translation. ➥the Epopt 06:16, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- Never mind; I found it. Kūpale ‘Āina (different spelling and diacriticals) means "Defend the Land." See Congresscritter Ed Case's Web site ➥the Epopt 06:21, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
The original ship's motto was "Ku Pale Aina" which is incorrect grammatically. The quote was formed using an online Ha'waiian-English Dictionary. It was subsequently corrected by a Ha'waiian philological society at the behest of CDR O. M. Travis. I know - I have been on board since the Hawaii was a pile of sheet at Quonset.
An anonymous edit changed the motto to 'Defenders of the Sea'. I don't speak Hawaiian, but I'm going to explain why I think that's incorrect based on my copy of the Commissioning book handed out by the Navy on 5 May 2007. There's no ISBN, no edition information; it's a special book printed for the occasion. Quoting from page 3: 'Ship's Motto - Kūpale ‘Āina - is a poetic translation from the Hawaiian of "Defending the Land." It articulates the crew's determination to protect the nation in the cause of freedom.' Buck (talk) 02:59, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
24 Aug 2007, Change of command ceremony. Outgoing Capt David A Solms, incoming, Cdr Edward Herrington. Cdr Herrington comes from PCU North Carolina (SSN 777) North Carolina Navy site. Capt Solms is transferring to the staff of Commander Submarine Force in Norfolk, Va. Norwich Bulletin Buck 17:29, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
Not sure if the page should list the current officers... Maybe it would be interesting to build a table of officers/COB and keep it updated as they change? Boat is in NLON until 2009 some time, then to Pearl. Just came back from maiden deployment and will enter PSA shortly http://theusshawaii.com/psa.htm Not sure if that should go on the article or not. Explanation of the seal comes from the Commissioning book. If someone has thoughts on how to cite this, I'll be very happy to put it into the main article. Quoting from page 3: 'The Seal, styled in the traditional Navy colors of blue and gold, provides a visual representation of the strong link between the State of Hawai'i and its namesake submarine, USS HAWAII (SSN 776). HAWAII will be the first commissioned warship to bear the name of the 50th state.
The three-sided spearhead shape symbolizes the warrior spirit as well as HAWAII's place as third ship of the VIRGINIA class of attack submarines, which brings a new generation of submarine technology to the fleet. The submerged submarine operating against the blue ocean backdrop represents HAWAII's ability to operate wherever needed in the world's oceans. The Hawaiian archipelago shows the ship's close relationship with the State of Hawai'i. At the top, the three orbiting electrons represent the unlimited endurance and operational power of a nuclear-powered attack submarine. The twin dolphins flanking the crest are the traditional insignia of the submarine force and represent the commitment of the officers and men who will bring HAWAII to life.'
