While the list of political and military events is sourced, there are some inaccuracies that should probably be corrected with other sources.

  • "Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated in Serbia." No he wasn't. The assassination took place in Sarajevo which was then part of Austro-Hungarian rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city has never been part of Serbia.
  • "The Irish Civil War ends." is listed in 1925 events. Actually the conflict ended in 1923.
  • "The Nationalist Socialist Party comes to power in Germany." is listed in 1930 events. No it did not. The 1930 government in Germany was under Heinrich Brüning of the Centre Party. The governing coalition included several parties but not the Nazis.
  • "The Spanish Civil War erupts." is listed in 1937 events. The War actually started in 1936 and the Siege of Madrid by Franco lasted from 1936 to 1939.
  • "Germany occupies the Rhineland" is also listed in 1937 events. Actually Germany already controlled the Rhineland since the occupation forces left in 1930. But German troops could not have presence in the area. The Nazi government violated previous agreements by sending its military there in 1936.
  • "South Africa adopts apartheid." is listed in 1949 events. While laws against interracial relationships passed in 1949, legal definition of the races was only established by the Population Registration Act, 1950 and separation of living areas according to race by the Group Areas Act, also in 1950.
  • "The United States enters the conflict in Vietnam." is listed in 1965 events. Per our article on 1965 in the Vietnam War, the States increased its military forces in South Vietnam and the The U.S. Army and Marines began ground operations to ferret out and defeat the communist forces. The Battle of Ia Drang was "the first major battle between regulars of the United States Army and regulars of the People's Army of Vietnam". However the States had about 23,000 military personnel stationed in South Vietnam by 1964 and they were already taking part in military actions under the guise of advisors.
  • "The Vietnam War ends." is listed under 1973 events. This seems to be focused only on American experience in the War. According to our article on 1973 in the Vietnam War, the last American combat troops left Vietnam in late March. However other combatants continued operations. The War continued in 1974 with the Battle of the Paracel Islands, the Battle of Svay Rieng, the Battle of the Iron Triangle, the Battle of Phuoc Long (which completed in 1975), and the first stages of the 1975 Spring Offensive. In 1975 the War finally ended with the Fall of Saigon in late April.
  • "Civil war breaks out in Rwanda." is listed under 1994 events. Actually the Rwandan Civil War started in 1990 and ended in 1994. It is the famous Rwandan Genocide that started in 1994.

I hope I am not annoying anyone only interested in the literary events of the list. Dimadick (talk) 16:33, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Vietnam ceasefire of 1973 officially ended American military involvement in the Vietnam War although the war itself did end in 1975. By then the war had indeed been over for the past two years at least as far as most Americans were concerned.
America had been sending "advisors" to South Vietnam since the 1950s but it was the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964 that led to America's military buildup which began in 1965. 50.110.193.112 (talk) 04:55, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reduce to 2 columns

[edit]

I suggest that we remove the middle column: "Literary history". It is quite sparse and the entries could be added to the "Historical events" column. -- GhostInTheMachine (talk) 19:50, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No objections so that is my task for tomorrow morning — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 17:38, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Done. The changes are only structural, I did not edit any of the text itself. — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 09:14, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Purpose of second column?

[edit]

I am unclear on the relevance of the second column to the article. It may be interesting to see what events were taking place around that time, but that seems more suited to a pop science article than an encyclopedic entry. It reads to me as a non-sequiter. Not very good

[edit]

While this may all be sourced from (ripped off from?) Clute's encyclopedia, I'm not impressed by much of it. It mentions a number of very marginally relevant British publications ("Grand Canyon" by Vita Sackville-West?) and it fails to indicate the relevance of much of the other listings. And I agree that the historical event column, while kind of interesting as a comparison, could probably go. This seems like someone dumped a bunch of stuff from Clute's work in an article. If I find the time I might try to improve this this. Brianyoumans (talk) 22:29, 29 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Aaaannd, this has recently been turned from a timeline of "literary science fiction" - the description in the lead - to a timeline of movies and tv shows as well as books. Is that what we want? We already have lists of science fiction films by decade. Brianyoumans (talk) 21:57, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
People are also adding every single release ever regardless of if it is noteworthy for the history of sci-fi or not.★Trekker (talk) 06:59, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lack of consistency and intent

[edit]

Can we set a more clear intent for this page? Both columns are really struggling from a lack of reasoning for why entries are significant enough to be included on this timeline. The 'events' column has a very obvious bias towards the inclusion of certain series; meanwhile, the 'historical events' column has some merit, but would need to be edited so that the events listed have a clear connection to science fiction publications and trends. I'm new to large edits so I don't want to overstep, but I'd really like to see this page get turned into something more interesting than a list of trivia. Minor Series?

[edit]

This is a timeline of science fiction, I preferred the details of what series were released and when. While some of them were "minor", I don't think it is fair to write off many of those as minor and, to be honest, minor content can result in major changes within science fiction. That is why science fiction is so interesting, it evolves both through major new content and the influence of minor content. Moreover, deciding something as minor is subjective. There were items removed that were not minor, such as Star Trek Prodigy, which is a completely new venture within the Star Trek franchise to engage younger audiences.

I think the more detailed breakdown speaks to the wealth of content being produced and the evolution of the genre as a whole. I'd like to see the changes revert back to where they were prior to March 27th. 64.135.139.204 (talk) 18:30, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think removing the material was fine. Ideally, items should be sourced with some indication that they are significant milestones or influential in some way. Does Prodigy really have as much significance as the publication of, say, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea or the release of Metropolis? I think we could do a great deal of trimming on this list. Of course, I posted years ago (see above) that I think this is not a good article, and the recent addition of TV and film franchises has not improved my opinion. Brianyoumans (talk) 22:34, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I mostly agree. I don't think that Ewoks was somehow influential on a genre, or that each Star Wars Clone wars seasons needs a separate mention. Same with Star Trek, Babylon 5, etc - it's not a timeline of one particular franchise, but of the genre as a whole. Artem.G (talk) 10:18, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The Tale of Icarus?

[edit]

Isn't this science fiction? Scientist fashions wings to escape his prison through his knowledge of technology and observation of birds. But it goes horribly wrong for him is the core of much of Science Fiction, isn't it? Shouldn't that also be added? Though it ends with don't get too close to the Gods as a moral, the center of the story is about the basic elements of science fiction. --KimYunmi (talk) 02:28, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
