Bothersome
[edit]There is something bothersome about the way the article is put together. While the noun "retard" does, in a way, refer to the affliction of mental retardation, it does not relate to the first bullet point in the same manner as it does to the second bullet point. When someone uses the term "retard" as a noun, they are not (in my experience) referring to the diminished mental capacity a person might have, but to the person him/herself. Please include an example in which "retard" can mean "mental retardation" or make the two points parallel.
Whoever did the edit containing the phrase "advocates of retardation" (paraphrased) should realize that one can not advocate (which would imply "promote") something that is a defect. Mental retardation does not change the affected person's abilities, and thus he is not "differently abled" but "disabled" or similar. One can not be an advocate of something that is an inherent flaw. That would be nonsense.
- Tell that to the Amputation fetishists. The flaw is in the eye of the beholder. It was not so long ago that the color of one's skin or the type of genitals underneath one's clothing were seen as permanent flaws. However, the phrasing is problematic, as few people consider the reduction of mental faculties to be an actual benefit to the person so affected. Perhaps advocates of people with retardation would be better. - 205.201.141.146 20:38, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
addition
[edit]Um...isn't "retard" also a verb?
- Yes. To retard something. (Emphasis on the second syllable.) Which then became the noun retardation, and the adjective retarded. Which was then turned into the perjorative retard (emphasis on the first syllable). --205.201.141.146 20:46, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Garry St. Jean redirect?
[edit]How do I fix a redirect? I was going through the Sacramento Kings page, clicked on Garry St. Jean, and it takes you to retard. Obviously somebody did a little tampering. If there is no page for St. jean, than we need it to go to an unedited page.
- Fixed, thanks for telling us. -→Buchanan-Hermit™/?! 04:55, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
Pharmaceutical uses
[edit]Many manufacturers of pharmaceuticals use the term "retard" added to the name of their product to indicate that its formulation is such that the blood level of the substance stays in the therapeutic range for a longer period. Such as "Bupropion" vs. "Bupropion retard," the second preparation being in the therapeutic range for a longer period, thus requiring only a daily once or twice administration as opposed to, say, daily three-six times.
It has come to my attention that in many pharmaceutical articles, the term "retard" was mindlessly removed from after the names of medications, even though it is part of the name and not vandalism. If required, I can show links to at least 50 of drug manufacturer pages where the term "retard" is so used by the manufacturer itself. P-kun80 (talk) 08:19, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Why the hell do you idiots have a redirect page with the slang "Retard" on it?
[edit]I'm Sorry< I thought this was Wikepedia, not encyclopedia Dramatica, and why do you guys have the words "aspies" and "assBurgers" written for the redirect Page to Autism, this is suposed a respectful site, for real facts and information, not trash, that garbadge is for Uncyclopedia, and Encyclopedia Dramatica, So WTF? are you Wikepedians a bunch of fucktards to, you`d better not be! your starting to piss me off! now, start being respectful, this is supposed to be a reliable, factual site, and you`d better be just that, this place is for fact, not opinion, all the douchebags putting crap like that on here, either grow up or GTFO!
- For the same reason we have "#REDIRECT Fellatio" at Blow job. A redirect from slang to the formal term keeps people from redirecting from slang to a living person accused of having intellectual disability. And "Assburger" is a common mishearing of "Asperger": say someone hears about "Assburger" syndrome on NPR but doesn't know how to spell it because radio isn't closed captioned. --Damian Yerrick (talk | stalk) 21:17, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
