The site recently went down without notice, so some boards in 4chan are in disarray right now, and the shitposting is leaking out to other sites, including here. 190.72.136.37 (talk) 02:23, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The sporadic editing doesn't seem too serious, I think we can leave things as they are. A single vandalism over few hours is nothing excessive. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:35, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's been going on all day, last edit less than half an hour ago. Reported it to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection, because of edit warring and vandalism. Digifiend (talk) 19:16, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Sonictrey: The lead section has a paragraph which doesn't use neutral language. The troubling diff is Special:Diff/778518665.

Original paragraph
The exact reason for this is unknown, though many believe it is due to a recent ruling by the European Court of Justice that criminalizes linking to pirated content.
An example of a better paragraph
The exact reason for this is unknown, though many believe it is due to a recent ruling by the European Court of Justice that criminalizes linking to unauthorized copies of works.

Alternatively, this may be removed as speculation and/or unsourced. Word "illegitimate" may also be used in place of "unauthorized", I believe. 84.250.0.210 (talk) 00:12, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Note: This paragraph also uses weasel words (WP:WEASEL). 84.250.0.210 (talk) 00:19, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, {{pp}} on article struck me. Thanks, removing it now. 84.250.0.210 (talk) 00:23, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

nyaa [dot] si

[edit]

Now there's such a replacement appears. Not sure if it's OK to mention it here. --Moonian (talk) 10:33, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'd tentatively support it, since they use the same nyaa main domain. But see also forks discussion below. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:54, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Forks

[edit]

It seems an anon disagrees with my mention that the site has been forked at continues to live on in at least two forks: [1]. Third opinion would be welcome. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 13:22, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

While it would be wrong to name one site as a "successor" (at least for now while the dust is still in the air), I think it is appropriate to note that the site was forked rather than just outright dying out, similar to how most articles have a "legacy", "aftermath", or "successor" sections. The anon seems to disagree with the reliability of the source, but only strong claims require strong sources. For a claim merely saying that offshoot sites sprung up, you don't really need an amazing source. Opencooper (talk) 17:37, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. The source is not high quality, but for a simple statement of fact that forks of database / soft exist, we don't need strong claims. Frankly, that statement could be sourced to the nyaa sites themselves - their existence is proof of the said fact. Perhaps that would be better, as we would bypass a third party cited now ([2]) and direct reader directly to the sites in question ([3], [4], [5], [6])? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 18:58, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In general it's preferable to use independent sources so I think it's better how it was before. And there's also the issue of directly citing multiple torrenting websites which violate copyright. Opencooper (talk) 20:32, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nyaa.si

[edit]

I personally think that the new link should be added to this page. It uses the same website but on a different domain. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Weedoe (talkcontribs) 03:38, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Status - two forks survived

[edit]

Reliable sources are hard to come by, but is pretty clear Nyaa is back and has been for quite a while. The two main forks that survived are https://nyaa.pantsu.cat/ and https://nyaa.si/ The best ref I have for this is [7]. Given the lack of reliable sources for any other speculation (ex. [8]), I think the best we can say is that, well, the Nyaa has now two versions, and link both. Through based on Alexa, .si is much more popular than pantsu.cat --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:36, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

When was Nyaa founded

[edit]

Nyaa.se according to whois was created in 2013. But TF in 2011 noted the domain was nyaatorrents.org. But whois states this was created in 2017, errrr, maybe the domain lapsed or and a new entry overwrote the prior one? Ok, Internet Archive then... and the oldest archived version (of the site's forum) is 2006. A few more clicks and it seems that the user Nyaa, site admin and likely creator, joined the forums in 2005 ([9]). So, it seems that category for 2005 establishments would be valid. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:04, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
