Language used in article

[edit]

Hi all,

Came across this Wiki article after reading a little about the Sentinelese and the history of the Andamans, after the area made international news recently.

My question is this: is "pacification" the right word for what Maurice Vidal Portman was doing? Wiktionary defines the verb 'pacify' as meaning "to bring peace", but I wonder if this description is rather subjective, and perhaps a different word should be used?

Really interested to hear opinions, particularly from those involved with Wikipedia:WikiProject British Empire.

According to https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pacification - 1b includes "the act of forcibly suppressing or eliminating a population considered to be hostile" which seems to be quite appropriate. Shyamal (talk) 17:17, 30 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The word no longer appears in the article. Anyway, I'd consider a word that has multiple contradicting senses to be a WP:WEASEL word unless the usage is clarified in situ. Arlo James Barnes 19:33, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

mock-Greek homoerotic compositions

[edit]

What is the source for this sentence? "A significant portion of his photography involved posing the Andamanese in mock-Greek homoerotic compositions" The citation on the following sentence is from Portman's own writing and doesn't mention this at all. What i can find of his photography, doesnt show erotic photos. https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/search?keyword=Maurice&keyword=Vidal&keyword=Portman&technique=photographic process Vitmonn (talk) 14:18, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
