Article name

[edit]

Should the name of the article be changed to "Wreck 'em Tech", like the Hook 'em Horns or Sic 'em Bears articles? Almosthonest06 (talk) 04:00, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Wreck 'em Tech" seems more in keeping with the fight song than with the hand gesture. "Hook 'em Horns" = horns hand sign; "Sic 'em Bears" = bear claw; "Gig 'em Aggies" = gig (barbed stake used for stabbing frogs). I've most commonly heard the Tech hand signal called "guns up"; but, admittedly, I'm mostly on the outside looking in. Until we come to a decision, I've created a redirect for Wreck 'em Tech. →Wordbuilder (talk) 04:50, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, the redirection should take care of it. I know here at Tech people say "Get your Guns Up!" and stuff like that but I wasn't sure if the phrase "Wreck 'em" went with the hand sign like "Hook 'em" does.Almosthonest06 (talk) 05:02, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking along the lines of "Get your Guns Up!" when I created the article. Glad the redirect takes care of it. If you have any other concerns or think of anything at Tech that needs an article, let me know. →Wordbuilder (talk) 14:48, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Citation for Guns Up

[edit]

Do we really need a citation for elbows being bent or straight? If its is absolutely necessary we could add more pictures of the hand gestures. There are countless examples of people doing the guns up both ways.

Also, the section removed about "The idea is that the Red Raiders will figuratively shoot down their opponents." with a citation - this idea or concept is not found in the linked citation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mattwalterstx (talkcontribs) 22:02, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If it's so important that it has to be in the article, it shouldn't be difficult to find a reliable source to support that the arms have to be held in a certain position. Pictures aren't sufficient proof as I've seen plenty where people are not holding their arms in the V or U position (here for instance). Figuratively shooting down the opponent was in the source text when the article was created. Since it is not longer there, it should not be here either. →Wordbuilder (talk) 23:48, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Whats better, more information or less? If you know how to do the Guns Up, you've probably done this both ways. Also, why remove the part about the universal greeting? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mattwalterstx (talkcontribs) 20:11, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

More information is usually better as long as it conforms to Wikipedia guidelines. Everything you added previously did not. →Wordbuilder (talk) 20:41, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you really care about this page, and about making it right - quit deleting the information, and assist getting it into format. I cringe that you are hawking every Texas Tech article this way. Its people like you that insure Wikipedia contains dated, and many times incorrect information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.142.188.119 (talk) 21:41, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It has to be cited, but can't be quoted. I think you are a little too attached to this page Christian. Why do you undo every reasonable edited item. My comments are cited with newer sources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mattwalterstx (talkcontribs)

I care about the page and about Wikipedia in general. That is why I insist on doing it right. If you care about this page, I would think you would want to do it right as well. If you believe the information here (or anywhere else) is outdated and incorrect, then update and correct it. So far, you have not. You've put in some WP:OR nonsense about the arms having to be held up with the palms facing outward, which you cannot site because it's not the only way to correctly do Guns Up (see the picture I linked to above as well as these: [1], [2], [3]). The other information you added updated nothing. You just WP:COPYVIOed the source. Citations are required, yes, but including them does not give you license to plagiarize much of the article's text. And, what newer source did you add? What source did you include that was not already in the article? As far as undoing reasonable edits, try making one here and see how I respond to. Up to this point, you haven't.
Finally, if you think I'm too attached, I'll leave your edits in, challenge them using the appropriate Wikipedia templates and seek opinions from editors who have not previously dealt with this article. →Wordbuilder (talk) 01:16, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It seems like you want nothing more than an edit war, Wordbuilder. I'm going to report you for reverting so many times. This is supposed to be an open information source, editable by the public. Most people would agree that more information is better, not less. The Raider Red Guns Up photo is a clear demonstration of the text used to describe the gesture. This gesture is also described in detail in the "hand gesture" article. Does citing one Wikipedia article as a source make it right? I don't know. Not every item has a citation, especially with such simple items as how to do a thumbs up or finger gun.

So far you have done a disservice to this site by: (1)Impeding improvements to the article (you removed quoted items, you also replaced newer quotations with older ones). (2) Participating in an edit war with a person who has edited the article in good faith. You actions, and the actions of people like you insure that Wikipedia is not a publicly editable source of information. You have personally unedited a reasonable article more than (3) times.

Again, this article is not yours. The goal of wikipedia is to be a collective source of information. I know you want to do right, but you are doing a disservice to an evolving source of knowledge. Please stop, you are going to be reported. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Msw00 (talkcontribs) 03:44, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In addition, it appears that you would rather have no information here than useful information. This is yet another sign that you need to step back from your computer, and question why you have entered into an edit war with a person who changes wikipedia with newer sources, and more descriptive text. Your profile says that you are a writer, you of all people should like more descriptive text. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Msw00 (talkcontribs) 03:49, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
