Move
[edit]The use of the word "glossary" in the title seems unsuitable for an encyclopaedia article. It would be better to treat this as Lepidopteran morphology since this seems to essentially deal with that. A rename would mean fixing many links, but that can be handled easily and should not be a hindrance to thinking of a better title. Shyamal 11:20, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Annotation
[edit]Hi Shyamal, can you annotate one of the SEM photos here and place next to the Hampson's head image?. Regards, AshLin 13:48, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
Something missing?
[edit]In the caterpillar section, an image seems to be missing. Only the legend is there to tell the story.--Wloveral (talk) 02:05, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
- Seems like a browser problem. Try shift F5 to reload the image. Also perhaps you have a suggestion for renaming this article to "lepidopteran morphology" or lepidopteran anatomy so as to be less of dictionary like entry and also perhaps cover terms used in genitalia descriptions (which makes anatomy a bit more suitable than morphology). Unlinked
[edit]I went through all the terms and fixed ambiguous links and unlinked any that linked to ambiguous pages for which there were no correct pages. Also, I've unlinked many terms that were simply redirects back to this page. Rwalker (talk) 17:51, 10 March 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry about that, i did that so I know which ones are red linked, and when I use the terms in articles, they can link back to the this page. Bugboy52.4 ¦ =-= 19:20, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
- According to WP:R, that is not how redirects should be used. If you intend to write the articles for these terms, please do redlink them, if not, just unlink them. Rwalker (talk) 21:27, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
phleophagy or phloeophagy?
[edit]really "phleophagy: feeding on bark" (??) or phloeophagy (phloeophagous insect etc.) ? derived from phloem -- Hl1948 (talk) 09:22, 11 September 2012 (UTC)
- You are quite correct. I had never noticed that item, but I set out to see whether I could improve matters. I was slightly horrified at what I found. I created the article (so far a redir, maybe more later, maybe not) and in its talk page I put the following text:
- This is a work in progress. There is a problem. When Wikipedia publishes a definition it soon afterwards (sometimes within minutes) appears on Google. This happens whether it is nonsense or not. The term phloeophagy is derived from the Greek via the word phloem, which is pronounced "flow-em", not "fleem". Quite commonly in English, and increasingly so in recent years, words of Greek origin that originally were spelt in English with the (frequently ligatured) "oe" and the pronuniation "ee". Examples include oedema and oesophagus, which now increasingly are being spelt without the O as edema and esophagus. This is widely regarded as an acceptable and soon may be universal practice. However this does not apply, or should not, to words such as phloem in which the two letters are not ligatured and the oe amounts to a disyllable.
- Phloeophagy is such a word, but whether from ignorance of the source or because of simple finger trouble, the word has been entered in Wikipedia in several places without the initial o, and now largely in reaction, it appears as such in hundreds of places in Google. Ironically, because the original word phloeophagy is rarely used (it is a comparatively recent construction in biology; this is understandable, because "bark eating" is hardly a term that most of us use on a daily basis) the error now actually occurs several times more often in Google than the correct spelling does. This is not just a matter of spelling preference, such as encyclopedia/encyclopaedia, but an actual error in form. It would be extremely embarrassing if such an illiteracy were shown to originate largely or completely from Wikipedia, and I am doing my best to cram the worms back into the can. Any assistance would be welcome.
- I have done some pruning and correction, now I am trying to get the redir with its erroneous phleophagy removed. Wish me luck. JonRichfield (talk) 13:35, 11 September 2012 (UTC)
some entries need a review
[edit]i found these 2 entries confusing:
(original text) 'mesothorax
the last segment of the thorax, after the metathorax. metathorax The second segment of the thorax after the prothorax, and posterior to the mesothorax.'
i've learnt that mesothorax is 2nd segment of the thorax, and metathorax is 3rd - thus last - segment of it. so, i think these 2 may be corrected like this:
'mesothorax
the second segment of the thorax, after the prothorax. metathorax The last segment of the thorax, posterior to the mesothorax.'
perhaps we may have more problems like these 2, still unknown ? not that simple task, but i think any editor with sufficient knowledges on entomological field should review whole entries in this article, thoroughly.
thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.12.22.71 (talk) 15:47, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Flashcards link
[edit]We wanted to learn all these terms in a flashcard format so we built one and made it freely available. Thought it would be helpful for anyone who wanted to learn the content of this glossary in a flashcard format like Anki to also be able to discover that they exist and have access to it from the source.
Was going to suggest it to be added in the external links section like the following but as it is linking to our own site, following the instructions of the Wikipedia guidelines, thought it would be best to leave this in the talk page for other contributors to see if it would be relevant or see if there was a better place/format to put it
