Can someone make it so "Mr. Gimmick" re-directs here?

Russian Magazine Interview

[edit]

The game's designer was interviewed in this edition of the Russian magazine DF. I haven't found a translation of this interview, though. If someone can translate the interview, or is able to add information from it, please do so. 和DITOREtails 16:58, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'll do this review tonight or this weekend.--IDVtalk 09:39, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Synopsis

[edit]
  • Change this section name to "Synopsis and gameplay" or something similar to better reflect its contents
    • Done

Music

[edit]
  • Should this be a sub-section of Development, since it's about the creation of the music?
    • Done
  • , the latter being in Tokyo and the former in Nagoya at the time. Why reverse the order? It would be clearer to say the locations in the same order as the people
    • Done
  • I would avoid the construction "NES/Famicom". "NES and Famicom" or just "the console" would be fine.
    • Done
  • while others requested music ranging from a designer who was a fan of techno and minimalist music to a programmer who enjoyed classical music. - this reads as "the music ranged from a designer to a programmer". Should be reworded.
    • Done
  • , he did not want the stage tracks - we have mentioned the designer and programmer since we last discussed Kageyama, so "he" should be changed to Kageyama.
    • Done
  • Sakai was fixated on designing the perfect controls for Gimmick!, the feel of these controls also influenced Kageyama's score. - I don't think the comma connects those two thoughts particularly well. Slight rewording needed.
    • Done

Release

[edit]
  • The character design is already shown in the cover art and (to a lesser extent) the screenshot, so I don't think this non-free image can be used.
    • Fair enough, Done
  • The Scandinavian release date (May 19, 1993) is mentioned in the May 1993 issue of Nintendomagasinet, page 4. Published by Atlantic Förlags AB, in Swedish. This should be included.
    • Thanks for getting that for me, Done

Reception

[edit]
  • You should include information from the Swedish Nintendomagasinet "Power Play" review. I translated all critical information from it if you need it (the rest of the feature is just a description of the gameplay premise): "Mr. Gimmick is quite reminiscent of Ufouria in terms of graphics, music, and gameplay. The game does not introduce anything new, but is still an all right platforming game. It is cute and easy to get into, and therefore perfect for younger Nintendo players." If you want to specify the page number in the citation, it's on page 7.
    • You rock! Thanks
  • Electronic Gaming Monthly reviewed the game in their July 1992 issue, providing a release window of "2nd half" of 1992, although the release was canceled. - This should go under Release, not Reception
    • Done
  • Paraphrase some of those review quotes, it's a bit excessive to have that many quotes in that close proximity.
    • Done

Issues not required to be fixed for GA promotion, but that I would still like to see done

[edit]
  • (Lead) Link localization to video game localization
    • Done
  • (Synopsis) One night, the toys suddenly come alive - "suddenly" is not needed
    • Done
  • (Synopsis) who follows the toys into the other dimension in search of the girl. - "into the other dimension" is not needed, we already established that that's where they went
    • Done
  • (Development) In order to surpass the quality of SNES games, - earlier, the SNES was referred to as the Super Nintendo. I would recommend consistency. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System article says that the official abbreviations are SNES and Super NES, so one of those two would probably be the best option.
    • Done
  • (Development) tiles into 2 groups [...] tiles into 4 groups - two groups, four groups
    • Done
  • (Music) OUT LIVE should be written "Out Live" (MOS:JAPAN#Titles of media)
    • Done
  • (Reception) You don't need to write reviewer scores in the prose - that's what we have the review table for
    • Done

Comments

[edit]

Looks good. I found some issues that need to be fixed though, as well as some that, while not required to meet the GA criteria, still would be nice to see fixed (and would be required for FA, if you want to try that). I'll put this on hold for a week; if the problems are fixed in that time, I'll promote the article.--IDVtalk 11:13, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@IDV:: Great thanks. I will get started on these edits. Also, I wanted to know your opinion on this: Should I change the article title to Mr. Gimmick and use the PAL box art? It's not technically an English release, but do you think that is the more common name and cover versus the Japanese? It was the title to be used for the North American release so I think it may be. TarkusAB 12:43, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
When in doubt, see what English RSs say - do they call it Mr. Gimmick or Gimmick? The Scandinavian release was quite limited, so I wouldn't be opposed to keeping the Japanese box art and title if we don't see a clear preference among English RSs.--IDVtalk 12:54, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@IDV: OK, I addressed everything above. I think I will keep the Japanese name for now. TarkusAB 19:59, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@TarkusAB: Excellent! I did some minor, further fixes (the Nintendomagasinet source is technically two separate magazines, with the review one being included with purchases of the main magazine, so I changed the citation accordingly), but I'm happy to promote Gimmick! to GA now. Congrats!--IDVtalk 22:16, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@IDV: Awesome! Thanks for your translation assistance. Where did you find the magazine? Do you have a copy? TarkusAB 22:32, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@TarkusAB: No problem. While I have a couple of stray issues, most of them bought second-hand way after they came out, I found a scan of this particular issue on the internet through some googling.--IDVtalk 22:36, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"Downgrade"

[edit]

Unlike its Japanese counterpart, this version features nine lives instead of four. The game also contains downgraded music due to the lack of an expanded sound channel chip.

Downgrade, is a pov term. It's entirely possible for someone to think the change is a positive one. I have heard that some people prefer to the audio for Castlevania III over the Famicom version. Though, most people consider it a downgrade. I'm not sure what to replace it with though. Harizotoh9 (talk) 17:49, 4 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's POV here because it is objectively a downgrade, the Famicom cart has a special chip that gives it more sound channels than the PAL version, meaning richer music. TarkusABtalk 18:06, 4 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
