Dylanmiller comment

[edit]

Florian Znaniecki; under-rated visionary or Hegel wannabe? Dylanmiller 05:06, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi from Nigel

[edit]

firstly I would like to strongly object to the tone and content of the above comment by Dylanmiller.

very minor changes

[edit]

I changed sociology to Sociology, I changed humanist sociology to Humanistic Sociology so it links to the Humanistic Sociology page. I put Humanistics Sociology in the see also section Nigel Savage 05:36, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think this should be reverted per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (capitalization) and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (capital letters).-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  15:43, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Piotr for pointing out naming conventions, the link to Florian Znaniecki Society in external links is broken, I will search around for a new link. I would like to add this link("The Humanistic Approach of Florian Znaniecki": http://www.lrz-muenchen.de/~Prof.Helle/znaniecki1.htm ) to the external links. It is a good summary of his academic life and ideas/work/contribution. I will wait to see if anyone objects Nigel Savage 00:34, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced content removed - four type of character and personaliity

[edit]

I am removing the following paragraph as unreferenced. I cannot find a ref for it, even in Google Books; no source seems to use all four Polish terms? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 09:37, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Znaniecki also defined four types of character and personality:

  • the humorous man (Polish człowiek zabawy) - develops among those who have much time, treats work as fun;
  • the working man (Polish człowiek pracy) - develops among the working class social class, treats work as a life necessity;
  • the well-behaved man (Polish człowiek dobrze wychowany) - develops among the intelligentsia social class;
  • the deviant man (Polish człowiek zboczeniec (dewiant)) - easily distinguishable from the others, not always in a negative perspective (he can be a genius or a criminal).
PS. Dulczewski (1986:254) briefly mentions the first three in plural - ludzie zabaway, etc. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:01, 25 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Portrait photograph

[edit]

Is there any way to get an actual photograph of Florian Znaniecki, such as the article had till the photo was deleted from the Commons? A plaque is not a satisfactory substitute. Surely a photo must be available somewhere — the man's been dead long enough. Nihil novi (talk) 08:42, 25 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Nihil novi: Unfortunately, with the prevailing meta:copyright paranoia, not really. He died in 1958. I couldn't find any pic from his young days (pre-1923), which would satisfy the easy cut-off date. See commons:User:Piotrus/PolishCopyright for what else may be acceptable, but long story short, available photographs are either anonymous or the photographer hasn't died far enough ago. For US, see commons:Commons:Anonymous_works#United_States mitigated by commons:Commons:Anonymous_works#No_author_information. I did contact ASA about their picture and they don't know who the author was. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 06:31, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"List of works"

[edit]

I've edited — where necessary, translated Polish titles, in — the article's "List of works".

Unfortunately, all the titles — of articles as well as books — were indiscriminately given in italics, making it impossible to tell which items were books and which were articles. In English, we italicize books, and we put articles in quotation marks.

In English, too, we list only the first city of a book's publication, not all those that may appear on the title page. I have dropped second and subsequent cities.

However, publishers' names are obligatory, and have almost nowhere been provided.

So, also, is the title of the periodical in which an article appeared.

It would be desirable to supply the respective information where it is missing.

Thanks.

copy-edit completed

[edit]

I've finished copy-editing the article. It would be well for those familiar with the sources to check the accuracy of the English text. My usually fair ability to guess the meanings of source texts may have failed me in a few spots, especially toward the end of the article. For example, in the original "Works" section, what is the exact meaning of "Szacki notes a puzzling gap in Znaniecki's research, which was that while he was well read and in discussion with most past and present theories, he mostly ignored the works of some notable sociologists of his time, such as Max Weber, Vilfredo Pareto and Talcott Parsons. In turn, his works were in close discussion with those of William I. Thomas, Georg Simmel, Robert E. Park and Émile Durkheim."? Nihil novi (talk) 08:01, 9 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Nihil novi: Rather than in discussion, perhaps a better expression would be in polemics with? Polish would be "jego prace nawiązywały do... ale nie brały pod uwagę prac... Były w ścisłym dialogu z...". --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:04, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Image review

[edit]

@Piotrus: Licensing of one image currently used in article checks out fine at Wikimedia Commons. Optional suggestions: Add {{commonscat}} to bottom of article in External links sect. Incorporate image File:Znaniecki 1918 the polish peasant in europe and america cover.png into body of article somewhere if you feel it's appropriate. Is it possible to add an image of the actual individual, a photograph? If not, no worries. Please update here when done with above. — Cirt (talk) 05:01, 11 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done and done. I have never been able to find a free image, through I'd hope some lurks in some obscure Polish book and waits to be scanned (pre-1994 photos first published in Polish books without clear copyright notice are in public domain). All pictures floating on the Internet have unknown authors and date, making them tricky to use. I even contacted ASA about it, and they don't know where the photo they use comes from. Maybe someone could trace his descendants and inquire about any photos they have... --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:44, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Piotrus:, per WP:LEAD, the lede intro sect should be able to function fully as a standalone summary of the entire article's contents -- and this is a relatively longer article -- can you please expand the lede intro sect accordingly? — Cirt (talk) 17:37, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Cirt: I hope this is sufficient: [5]. I am not sure what else could be added there? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:59, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Much better, thanks. Will do rest of review next. — Cirt (talk) 12:08, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Successful good article nomination

[edit]

I am glad to report that this article nomination for good article status has been promoted. This is how the article, as of October 15, 2014, compares against the six good article criteria:

1. Well written?: Writing quality is pretty good for good article quality at this time, throughout the page. I'd suggest further copy editing in the future, from editors previously uninvolved with the page, for further quality improvement initiatives going forwards.
2. Factually accurate?: Duly cited throughout.
3. Broad in coverage?: Covers major aspects. Going forwards: some sects could use expansion. Including for example I'm sure there's more info from secondary sources to expand sects: Late U.S. career, Family, and probably also to expand sets Work with Thomas and Founding Polish sociology.
4. Neutral point of view?: Written in a neutral, matter-of-fact tone throughout. I was at first a bit leery on the Importance sect, but this appears to be drawn from secondary sources. Might want to try removing this sect in favor of incorporating it into the body text alongside descriptions of his works, just a suggestion.
5. Article stability? See above, passes here.
6. Images?: See above, passes here.

Certainly room for further quality improvement but good for GA quality at this time. A nice educational article on this deceased individual. If you feel that this review is in error, feel free to take it to Good article reassessment. Thank you to all of the editors who worked hard to bring it to this status, and congratulations.— — Cirt (talk) 16:49, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
