Vandalism?
[edit]Why have all the letter "e"s been replaced with "z"s?
Copyright of images
[edit]This is a very nice article - but I wonder about the images. The source for them says:
"Except where noted, all photographs are by the late Svienn Eirikksen, fire marshal of the town of Vestmannaeyjar."
Presumably this garbled name is supposed to be "Sveinn Eiríksson" or something to that effect. In any case I highly doubt that he was an employee of the United States Geological Survey as the image description pages imply.
We may well be able to use these images, but I doubt that they're really strictly in the public domain. - Haukur Þorgeirsson 12:01, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
- I thought these would be OK as they were used in the USGS ´Fire and Water´ report which I used as a reference in writing this article. I was perhaps optimistically thinking they would be free if they appeared in USGS work, even if not originally produced by USGS - I couldn´t find anything that said they would not be free. Worldtraveller 21:01, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
- There's a great many inaccuracies in this article. To name one offhandedly, Helgafell, which truly does mean holy mountain actually doesn't in this case, since there's nothing holy about it - rather it is named after the slave Helgi who was slain there, according to certain versions of Landnámubók. I'll try to clear up the inaccuracies later on... uhm.. bug me on my Icelandic user talk if I forget. Btw, I lived "beside" Eldfell for about 11 years and was the originator of the MediaWiki-based encyclopedia of Vestmannaeyjar, Heimaslóð (Icelandic only; the english bit sucks)... sorry to have missed this article for so long, I only just noticed it on Wikipedia:Icelandic Wikipedians' notice board. --Smári McCarthy 13:40, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
Units
[edit]This is an excellent article - thank you. There was some inconsistency in unit spelling and order. I have corrected this to use metric, US equivalent in parentheses and non-US spellings throughout. Bazza 12:16, 29 March 2006 (UTC) (signed later as I forgot!)
Minor lead request
[edit]What language does Eldfell mean Fire Mountain in? Staxringold 23:53, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- It's Icelandic. I was about to edit the lead to mention that, but then I wondered if it is not already reasonably clear - Iceland is mentioned in the first sentence, so for style reasons I'd prefer to avoid the word Icelandic in the very next sentence. If you definitely think it needs explicitly stating I'll rewrite the whole paragraph. Worldtraveller 16:36, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- That's what I would have guessed, but I think it's worth a mention (and I don't think repeating Icelandic is a bad thing). Staxringold 21:31, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- OK - added the language. If you can think of a better phrasing please edit it! Worldtraveller 17:54, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Awesome article
[edit]This was a riveting read. Great example of a FA and great writing.--Anchoress 01:17, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
- I second that. Congratulations to everyone involved! --Kripkenstein 16:43, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
- Quite a good read. It's screaming for a picture of the "lava cooling operations"; the aerial photo doesn't do it any justice. Tempshill 18:17, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
height not accurate
[edit]I'm sure it's just a typo, but this volcano seems impossibly large. see intro para. can someone please substitute correct height?
- The height, along with some other things, were changed by a vandal 6 minutes before you made this talk comment. It was fixed (partly by an anon IP, partly by myself) 3 minutes afterward. -- Jonel | Speak 01:34, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
internal links of dates
[edit]could some of the internal links for dates be removed? excessive internal linking of dates is really a serious problem on Wikipedia... ppl regard the linking a necessary format...--K.C. Tang 03:26, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
- Why is it such a problem? I internally link dates because doing so allows locale-specific date formatting, e.g. when I write 7 February, Commonwealth users will see "7 February" and North Americans will see "February 7", provided you're configured date formatting when setting up your account. --Saforrest 06:06, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
- so there's a reason, i see... maybe i'm a bit too fussy:)--K.C. Tang 15:46, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
strange spelling
[edit]Strange spelling...technically "fire mountain" in Icelandic would be ELDFJALL. I started to make the corrections but note that in several locations the specific volcano on Heimaey is spelled ELDFELL.
- And since you left the name form quite inconsistent (and also Helgafell/Helgafjall), I have reverted the article to the version before your edits. Bishonen | talk 23:23, 14 April 2006 (UTC).
- Fell and fjall are both Icelandic words for mountain. The correct name here is Eldfell. --Heida Maria 22:16, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
One third?
[edit]Hi, from the article: It is estimated that a third of all the basaltic lava erupted in the world in recorded history has been produced by Icelandic eruptions. - can anybody prove this (name a good source). If yes: what is ment with this, what timeframe does it apply to? --Wirthi 08:23, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
- I'll add inline citations to this article shortly - I believe this particular fact may come from a reference that's not actually listed at the moment, Decker and Decker's Volcanoes. I'd guess the time frame must mean since Icelandic settlement, as before that would be before 'historical' times in Iceland. Worldtraveller 11:36, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
- ok, thanks for your work on this article. I'll keep the german translation updated from time to time. But about the third: it's about worldwide lava eruptions, so I would not automatically imply a connection to the settlement of Iceland. --Wirthi 13:15, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

volume of lava
[edit]hi I'm doing a school project on the eldfell eruption and I was wondering if the volume of lava produced was something I could find.I have looked on a few search engines (GOOGLE, ASK, YAHOO) but it doesn't seem to be accessable. Please help me! kim 212.100.250.230 (talk) 14:28, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
Eldfell != Mountain of Fire
[edit]The leading section claims "Eldfell" is translated as "Mountain of Fire", wouldn't it be better referred to as "Fell of Fire" or even better rewritten as "(literally Firefell)"? --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 02:59, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
Lava-cooling operations in Edinburgh of the Seven Seas
[edit]It would be interesting to find out how the lava-cooling operations carried out more than 10 years earlier in Edinburgh of the Seven Seas compare to those described in the article.
- I'd be very much interested in comparing the two, if I could find any references to any lava cooling operations in Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. Everywhere I looked gave me very limited information about the eruption, only that it happened in 1961, the entire village was evacuated to UK and most of the villagers were back by 1963. There's no mentioning of any lava cooling operations, so if there was any, I can only guess it was very small scale and not particularly noteworthy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Einargizz (talk • contribs) 18:11, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
The lava field on Tristan can be seen here: http://www.tristantimes.com/art_1191_45_7.html --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 03:07, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
Non-explanitory article
[edit]The article opens with "Eldfell is a composite cone as it is made up of layers of dried lava and then ash giving it distinctive layers of different compositions volcano just over 200 metres (650 ft) high on the Icelandic island of Heimaey." This is assuming that the reader already knows it is a volcano. Plus, it doesn't say if it is active or dormant, or whether it is a shield or a stratovolcano. I think there is a lot of room for improvment. --The High Fin Sperm Whale (talk) 23:13, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
- The bit you quote is partly a correction, but mainly an editorial comment, posted a few days ago. I'll fix it. The rest of your points seem poorly founded: that sentence does say it's a volcano, it erupted in 1973 so is clearly active, and composite volcano is a synonym for stratovolcano. Yes, it needs to be improved, but I think not in those ways. -- Avenue (talk) 02:19, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
USGS article.
[edit]Quite a bunch of information on the eruption. http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/of97-724/edintro.html Bizzybody (talk) 13:37, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Still cooling?
[edit]It's been 37 years, are they still getting heat out of the lava flow? Bizzybody (talk) 13:39, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
VEI rating
[edit]I removed the VEI rating category because there was no citation and the text gives a volume that is equivalent to a 4. Can I use this, or do I need a specific citation? Op47 (talk) 20:10, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
