I don't agree that this article should be merged with that of the Durga Puja. It would be as crass as forcing together "Christ" and "Christmas". The "Durga Puja" is both a state and a religious holiday. The two Wikipedia pages deserve to have their own identity.
There is little enough in-depth information about Hindu religion on Wikipedia as it is and most of it is, sadly, written by non-Hindus who feel comfortable writing about traditions that they have not themselves studied in any depth. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.135.200.247 (talk • contribs) 21:08, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- What was this comment about? I assume it doesn't apply any more, given that it's now sitting in the talk page with Durga Puja? How confusing. --Oolong 15:40, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

The displays
[edit]Someone a bit more knowledgeable than me should probably add some more about the standard Durga Puja tableau - it's not described in any detail at the time of writing. Who's she slaying? (Maheshasura, as I understand it, though almost everyone I met in Kolkata seemed to refer to him as just Asura, pronounced 'Oshur)... Who are her four children, and what is their significance in the proceedings? Does the lion have a name? What about the poor bull who's getting beheaded? I could answer most of these questions myself, based on what local Hindus told me, but someone must have a better idea than me...? --Oolong 15:40, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
- asur =demon name is mahishasur poor bull is the demon no lion name in my knowledge Alderbaraan (talk) 04:38, 5 October 2024 (UTC)

[edit]wrong sentence. in Bangladesh, durga-puja is not a big event. this line could be re-written as "it is also the most significant socio-cultural event in Bengali Hindu society." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.247.142.88 (talk) 14:10, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit]The article is already well written, but, I feel needs some clean up and additional citations for verification. I am trying to do. --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 16:05, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
- These two pages don't exist in Wikipedia. I have removed these from "See Also" section, as there was simply nothing to see. --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 16:19, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
- I have created a new section, Durga Puja Mantra and added an audio sample. --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 16:48, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
- I have added Durga Puja pronunciation sample. --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 17:07, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Merge proposal Akaal bodhan
[edit]If Akaal bodhan is just another term for the same festival, please merge. Wiki-uk (talk) 09:12, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
- Do not agree! But, why do you think so? --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 11:38, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
Yes, please merge [[Akaal bodhan}} with this article as they both are just same!! (SEND ME A MESSAGE) Jagadhatri 08:28, 29 December 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jagadhatri (talk • contribs)
- Please don't merge the article. The article is not on Durga Puja, we have clearly mentioned it at the begining of the article. This article is on the term and on the theme Akaal Bodhan. --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 02:13, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Last Durga Puja, I started working on Durga Puja Mantra section. But, could not add enough information in that section due to lack of time. Oops sorry! I feel we should not add too many verses (slokas) in this article. But the mantra I have added today is a very important Mantra in Durga Puja. Hope to do some clean up/fmt works further. Thanks! --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 18:02, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
Intentional exclusion of animal sacrifice (and frequency) amounts to NPOV?
[edit]Is there a reason there is only one reference to human and one reference to animal sacrifice in this entire article? Given that blood sacrifice NOT occurring is the oddity during this festival, and the negative impact that such practices has wrought I understand why to practitioners it would be of the utmost importance to sanitize the article so people don't think ill of them, but this isn't encyclopedic practice, and leaving things out just because people will think ill of you is absurd. If you feel that bad about it, stop doing it. As for it's inclusion, it must be mentioned. To sanitize and whitewash the article is purely an act of NPOV editing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.211.56.55 (talk) 01:32, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Selecting images
[edit]@Utcursch: and others: After Durga article, I intend to attempt cleaning up this article. Too many old tags and unreferenced sections. There is some serious OR herein which needs surgery, and way too many images. I suggest we keep between 6 to 10 best quality and most information rich images, eliminate the rest. Any particular images you would favor? Any additional thoughts and guidance to help improve this article? Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 15:06, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
- I agree that the article needs cleanup, including removal of images. I'd recommend making bold edits -- if someone objects, we can have a discussion on the talk page. utcursch | talk 16:22, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
- most of the sources in the bibliography are not used in body text. Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 07:34, 17 February 2017 (UTC)
- We just started the article clean up. Please wait for a week or so, more of the harv biblio section will get used. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 13:56, 17 February 2017 (UTC)
- most of the sources in the bibliography are not used in body text. Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 07:34, 17 February 2017 (UTC)
- Very impressive transformation of the first half of the article! utcursch | talk 19:07, 24 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Utcursch: Thank you. I intend to return to regional section later, after other major South Asian festival related wikipedia articles have better introduction. The "Regional variations" and "Other countries" sections require locating reliable sources and a lot of reading, before a clean up. I hope other page watchers such as Lingzhi will join in and improve the regional section, saving me the effort!! Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 19:20, 24 February 2017 (UTC)
Proposed merge with Durga puja of West Bengal
[edit]No reliable sources on Durga puja of West Bengal. Can be substantially included in main article. No rationale for forking. Tamravidhir (talk) 10:26, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
- Support since it is about the same festival. We can merge some of the information not already present into this article. I would actually recommend the same for another page titled Durja Puja in Bangladesh.--DreamLinker (talk) 18:28, 18 September 2019 (UTC)
- S Yeah merge both of the two that are on templates atop the page into this one. ♦ Lingzhi2 (talk) 02:04, 19 September 2019 (UTC)
- Support: As proposed, I support the inclusion of both. There is also another page — Durga Puja in Odisha. IMO, that should also be merged with this article as it has merely extensive WP:OR (no WP:RS) and there is already a section on Odisha here. The information on Durga Puja in Odisha may be included to this article given a WP:RS is found for the same. --Tamravidhir (talk) 02:26, 19 September 2019 (UTC)
- @DreamLinker: @Lingzhi2: Redirected Done --Tamravidhir (talk) 00:03, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
How to fix referencing errors
[edit]@Tamravidhir: There are many errors in the referencing etc here. I am a little busy but I can post fixes one by one at different times of day.
- Hyphen in pg. range; There are many, many of these, but they can be fixed easily & all in one blow with one script. Use User talk:GregU/dashes.js to fix this error.
- Coburn 1991, pp. 13. P/PP error? pp. 13.; There are three of these errors... If you look at the article text you'll see {{sfn|Coburn|1991|pp=13}}. In this case, the pp= should be p= because it references only one page (in this particular case, it is page 13). If the cite lists more than one page, use pp=. For example, immediately after this error I see {{sfn|Coburn|2002|pp=1-7}}. That one is correct. It correctly uses pp= because it has a page range (1-7) instead of a single page. ♦ Lingzhi2 (talk) 08:58, 27 September 2019 (UTC)
Dates for this and the coming few years missing
[edit]The infobox doesn't show the dates for 2021, 2022 and 2023. What is the reason for this? Can they be added? Wiki-uk (talk) 10:30, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

Please replace all appearances of "Durga puja" with "Durga Puja". No non-capitalised "puja" appearances are in the references, and I didn't see any in quotations in the body of the article, so none of them needs to be retained. Even if "puja" is a valid form, "Puja" is the form used in the article title, and it wouldn't make sense to use one form in the article title and another form in the article body. 175.39.61.121 (talk) 21:03, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
- Done though if this was incorrect, please do revert me. --Pinchme123 (talk) 02:36, 6 October 2022 (UTC)
Time to organize the section on overseas celebrations.
[edit]Current description in paragraphs looks cluttered IMO. Time to create sections -- Maybe one for each country/continent and have a tabular list of the celebrations at various places. EnneDee (talk) 16:48, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- Any suggestions/objections to this proposal? EnneDee (talk) 23:51, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
