Please read before editing

Before editing this article, note that characters (and locations) should be referred to by the names they are given in Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls as those are the most recently translated English versions of the names. If different names are used in the original version of the game or in Final Fantasy Origins this should be noted. Names in fan translations should not be noted as they are by no means official in the eyes of Square Enix.

I think it's best to use the most recently translated version of the game. If there were any translation errors in the original Japanese->English translation, Square Enix has been given a second chance to correct it. (Notice that the two characters with different names between the English versions. Guy is closer to Guy than Gus (duh) and Ricard is closer to Richard than Gareth.) Also, in this specific case the DoS version names is a better choice than Origins, because it's much more likely that more people have played DoS. I personally saw much more PR for DoS than Origins. More importantly, Origins was one of the last PSone games ever published, and people were much more likely to spend money on new PS2 games than remakes of NES games released on a "near-extinct" platform. DoS was released when the GBA was still the hottest handheld platform on the market. And I think it's silly to use the Japanese names. warpedmirror (talk) 20:09, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge

I recently proposed the articles Firioniel, Maria (Final Fantasy II), Guy (Final Fantasy II), Leonhart, MingWu, Josef (Final Fantasy II), Gordon (Final Fantasy II), Reila, and Edward Highwind to be merged into this article. I think we can all agree that none of the FF2 characters have enough of an in-depth story or fanbase to be prominent articles that can stand on their own. Formatting problem

All the image galleries on this page cause weird problems under the Cologne Blue style. The boxes seem to slowing indent into the main body of the article instead of staying on the right where they belong. Grandwazir 17:33, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An FFII novelization?

I've picked up this paragraph for discussion:

"In the Japan-exclusive novelization of the game Final Fantasy II Nightmare's Labyrinth (ファイナルファンタジーII 夢魔の迷宮, , Fainaru Fantajī Tsū Muma no Meikyū), the Emperor is given the name Mateus (マティウス). This name would be used in reference to him in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance as the Totema of the Hume race as well as in Final Fantasy XII as the ice-based Esper."

Can anyone confirm? I've never heard about an FFII novelization. Google gives zero result when I search "Nightmare's Labyrinth". Chrono'99 15:01, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm the one who posted the info - The novel was only released in Japan back in 1989 about 5 months after the original Famicom release. It's currently out-of-print, but can be bought used through AmazonJapan. In so far as I can tell, it's the source of the name "Mateus" as the Emperor's given name which has subsequently been used in reference to him in FFT:A and FFXII as the Totema and the Esper respectfully. I know that this given name is not mentioned in either language version of the game, but felt it right to try and shed some light on the name's source as well as to make the reference clear. --Schala-Kitty 02:10, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly, all of the information about the book is in Japanese - However, while it does provide some additional information (such as the Emperor's first name and the fact that Firion was born in Salamand) it also contradicts and omits major parts of the in-game story (for example, Josef and Ricard are not included in the cast). Kain

I think the crap about Kain being the same one as FFIV's Kain needs to be taken out. Everyone knows that each FF takes place in its own world. They just added that to the DoS remake to create another consistency, a dragoon named Kain, just like Cid or Biggs and Wedge.

Richard or Ricard?

The article uses Richard at first, but then it uses Ricard. AFAIK, it doesn't have the "h" in it, but I'd say whatever was used most recently (20th Anniversary for the PSP) should be seen as the "most canon" English name. --Jopasopa (talk) 16:33, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
