  • 16:0316:03, 12 June 2024 diff hist 825 Presidential elections in France Clarified that the President is elected to a five-year term (seven years before 2002) but not necessarily “every five years.” Previous language (“every five years”) was potentially misleading to readers accustomed to the US practice of a strict four-year presidential cycle that can never be interrupted even if a vacancy occurs. When the French presciently is vacant, a new election is held almost immediately for a full presidential term, which interrupts the cycle and resets the clock.
