Paintings of Me is the debut solo studio album by American singer and media personality Gabi DeMartino. It was independently released on May 6, 2022.[1] The album development began in 2019, originally being titled Beautiful Mess, with "Champagne Dreams" intended as the lead single. The album would later be renamed, and "Pretty Little Mind" would serve as the official lead single.

Background

[edit]

DeMartino began her music career as part of the pop duo Niki and Gabi, alongside her twin sister Niki. The duo would later release their debut EP Individual (2018), which charted on two Billboard charts.[2][3] While continuing her work with Niki, DeMartino also pursued solo projects. She created the web series Blood Queens,[4] co-starred in Ariana Grande's "Thank U, Next" music video, and began releasing solo music.[5] Her debut single "Ever After" was released in 2016, followed by "Flowers", which appeared on Individual and its music video featured Paris Hilton.[6] Other singles included "Yacht", released shortly after "Flowers", and "Cold Room" in 2019.[7]

In 2020, Niki and Gabi announced a hiatus to focus on their solo projects.[8] DeMartino signed with Roc Nation for music management[9] and initially released "Champagne Dreams" in September, which was promoted as the lead single for her then-upcoming solo album, followed by "Pretty Little Mind" as the second single.[10] However, after several changes in direction, "Champagne Dreams" was removed from the album’s final tracklist, making "Pretty Little Mind" the official lead single.

Paintings of Me was originally titled Beautiful Mess,[11] and was initially created as a Niki and Gabi album, but Niki ultimately decided not to participate, as the album did not align with her style.[12] One of the intended lead singles, "Hair Tie", was released in August 2019 as part of the scrapped project.[13]

In June 2023, DeMartino revealed that Paintings of Me was accidental.[14]

Promotion

[edit]

To promote the album, DeMartino performed at Musikfest a couple of times. In 2020, she performed "Champagne Dreams" and "Not Today" virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[15][16] The following year, she opened for German musician Zedd at the same festival and performed several songs from her album.[17]

Singles

[edit]

The lead single "Pretty Little Mind" was released on October 9, 2020. It's an electro-pop song that features elements of EDM.[18] "Not Today" was released on August 13, 2021, the same day she performed at Musikfest.[19] Later on October 27, she released the third single "Immaculate" in which she described as a cancel culture anthem.[20] The fourth and final single "Broken Morning", a pop-ballad song, was released March 25, 2022.[21]
