Do Sau Panch was raised in Devlali on 1 October 1966, post the 1965 Indian-Pakistan war. One of the first Divisional Locating Batteries to be raised, the unit had an “All India All Class” composition and was equipped with FAX-150 Radar. Major HL Chopra was the first Commanding Officer for the unit.
The unit proved its mettle under tough battle conditions during “Op CACTUS LILY” in the 1971 Indo-Pak War. A relatively new unit, it raised the bar by locating 86 enemy gun positions and 219 enemy mortar positions in the YANKEE ONE Sector. Resilient and unsung, the battery was presented with a fired cartridge used as part of salvos fired by 220 Medium Regiment to execute counter bombardment tasks on hostile Pakistani batteries during the operation.
Do Sau Panch was re-christened as “205 Surveillance and Target Acquisition Battery” on 2 June 1987. Having served in ten different locations since raising, the unit has participated in Op CACTUS LILY (Kaluchak), Op ZETER and Op TRIDENT (Allahabad), Op RAKSHAK-I (Firozpur), Op RAKSHAK and Op VIJAY (Janglot), Op RAKSHAK-II and Op PARAKRAM (Kaluchak), Op RAKSHAK (Kargil & Khumbathang), Op RHINO (Rayang) & Op ZAFRAN (Firozpur).
In Firozpur, the unit won accolades by winning the Corps level BFSR MR competition. In 17 Mtn Div AOR (East Sikkim) the unit manned the sensors in air maintenance posts to keep the LAC under svl and also created and validated BPs to cover the entire Div frontage whilst braving hostile terrain and wx conditions to produce stellar results, proving its professional mettle and collective fortitude.
Currently, the unit is orbatted to 119 (I) Inf Bde wef Apr 24 and is stationed at Nainital with sensors deployed at HAA in Kumaon Sect providing real time Op int to Cdrs in chain living up to its motto:- Thundering Two Nought Five.
