Khadaan is an upcoming 2024 Bengali language period vigilante action thriller film directed and written by Soojit Dutta (Rino).[1][2] The film stars Dev, Jisshu Sengupta, Barkha Bisht, Idhika Paul and Anirban Chakrabarti in the lead roles.[3] Produced by Nispal Singh and Dev under the banner of Surinder Films and Dev Entertainment Ventures, the film is based upon the mutiny, scrimmage and friendship of two workers in the coal mines of Damodar Valley, who try to change to change their fate along with the destiny of the other workers.[4][5]

Extensively shot in the coal mines of Bengal, it will mark Dev's return to action genre after a series of family dramas and detective ventures.[6] The film will also mark Dev's debut in the role of the creative director.[7] Rathijit Bhattacharya, Savvy, Nilayan Chatterjee did the music of the film. Shailesh Awashthi did the cinematography while MD. Kalam handled the editing. It is scheduled to release in the theatres on 20 December 2024, on the eve of Christmas.[8][9]

Premise

Shyam comes from a remote village of Purulia to work as a laborer in the coal mines of the Damodar Valley. There he meets Mohan. The story depicts how Mohan and Shyam with their unbeatable spirit, will proceed to change their destiny and rewrite the fate of the other workers, with their reckoning bond of friendship.

Announcement and development

The film was announced by Dev on 1 January 2024 with a motion poster, which revealed the title and the lead cast.[14][15] It also revealed the first look of Dev's character as Shyam Mahato in the film.[16] On 14 February 2024, on the eve of Saraswati Puja, the Shubh Muhurat of the film was performed.[17] The first look posters of Dev and Jisshu were released on 16 February 2024. The posters also mentioned that the filming would start from that day.[18] On 13 March 2024, the makers uploaded second poster of the film, informing that the second schedule of the film has been completed.[19]

Casting

Jisshu Sengupta was roped in to play the role of Dev's Vaishnavite friend in the film in January 2024.[20][21] Later, Idhika Paul and Barkha Bisht also joined the cast.[22] Bonny Sengupta was approached for a pivotal role in the film but he rejected it. Reports suggested that he not wanted to work in any dark and negative character.[23] He preferred to maintain his romantic hero image among the audience. [24]Later, John Bhattacharya was roped in for that role.[25]

Filming

Major parts of the film was shot in the coal mines of Asansol and Raniganj in West Bengal.[26] On 16 January 2024, Dev along with Soojit Dutta and others went to recce at Shonpur Bazar Coal mines in ECL Pandaveshwar, accompanied by ECL officers, to consider the place as one of the shooting spots.[27] On that occassion, Dev also unfurled his wax statue at the Asansol Wax Musaeuem.[28] The filming started on 16 February 2024 with a short schedule in Kolkata.[29] The schedule included indoor shots as well as a makeshift set at Nalban in Bidhannagar.[30]

From 4 March 2024, the second schedule was started in the coalfields in Asansol.[31][32] The remaining parts were filmed in the Asansol and Raniganj coalfields where Dev had went earlier to recce the place.[33][34] The second schedule was completed by 10 March 2024. It was shot across Durgapur, Asansol and Bankura.[35] A scene was filmed at the Rondiha Barrage beside the Damodar River in Panagarh, where Dev and Jisshu met the fans who came to see the shooting.[36] On 1 October 2024, the producers informed with a new poster that the filming has been completed and wrapped up.[37]

Marketing

The teaser was initially planned to release on 14 August 2024.[38] But it was postponed as a sign of solidarity with the then ongoing protests against the RG Kar rape and murder incident.[39][40] The teaser was finally dropped on 29 August 2024, 2 weeks after the initially scheduled date.[41][42]

The music of the film has been composed by Rathijit Bhattacharya, Savvy and Nilayan Chatterjee. The lyrics have been penned by Ritam Sen and others.

The first single "Rajar Raja" was released on 12 November 2024.[43][44] It marked Dev in a dance song after a decade of films including no dance numbers.[45]

Release

The film is scheduled to release in the theatres on 20 December 2024 on the eve of Christmas weekend.[46][47]
