Career

Mandel released her debut single, "Yours", in 2018, which saw success on Canadian radio.[7][4] Her debut EP, Sweater Collection, was released on May 3, 2019.[8] That same year, she released a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark", which also saw success.[4][9]

During the COVID-19 lockdown in early 2020, Mandel gained greater popularity on TikTok with a series of alternate POV covers of popular songs, including Taylor Swift's "Betty", The Kid Laroi's "Without You", and Adele's "Someone Like You".[4] In June of that year, she released the single "Dead Inside", and the following month she filmed an exclusive bedroom performance of the song for Ones to Watch.[7] This and two subsequent singles, "Hate U" and "Dear First Love,", were announced as part of a sophomore EP entitled Permanent Damage,[10][11][12] but the EP did not materialize. In September, People magazine included her on a list of "emerging artists making their mark on the musical landscape".[13]

In February 2021, Mandel signed a publishing deal with APG.[9] A new single, "lonely & pathetic", was released shortly after the announcement.[9] In September, she joined Simple Plan and New Found Glory on their joint Pop Punk's Still Not Dead tour.[14] The following month, it was announced that Mandel had signed to Hopeless Records, accompanied by the release of the single "u look stupid" and the reveal of upcoming EP overkill, which would be released November 12.[15][16][17] Also in October, she toured the United States with New Found Glory, Less Than Jake, and Hot Mulligan.[15]

In February 2022, Mandel collaborated with Maggie Lindemann on the single "debbie downer"; the song and music video reference the 2000 film Bring It On.[18][19][20][21] Two more singles were released over the next few months: "junkie", whose video pays homage to the crime drama Breaking Bad,[22] and "THE FLOOR IS LAVA!!".[23] Over the summer, she performed at Lollapalooza[24] and at Sad Summer Festival with Waterparks, Neck Deep, and Mayday Parade.[23] A third EP, debbie downer, was released on September 30 via Hopeless.[25] In October, she teamed up with Simple Plan for an Amazon Music-exclusive 20th anniversary rerecording of the latter's song "I'm Just a Kid".[26]

March 2023 saw the release of a new single, "5, 6, 7, 8", a collaboration with Travis Mills' band girlfriends, with production by John Feldmann, The Futuristics, and Brock.[27][28] She was announced to perform at that spring's Slam Dunk Festival in May.[27][15] In July, she released a new single, "hot girls in hell",[29][30][31] and embarked on a fall US tour supporting Boys Like Girls, State Champs, and The Summer Set on the former's Speaking Our Language Tour.[6][32][5] Mandel also planned to tour the UK and Europe with Against the Current.[33] She released two more singles, "faceplant"[6][33][34] and the acoustic song "*snow in berlin*",[35][36][37] before the year's end.

In January 2024, she was included on Kerrang!'s "The Sound of 2024" list of "new artists redefining alternative music".[38] That same month, she released the single "2 of us".[39][40]

Artistry

Mandel's music has been described as alternative pop,[4][41][17][29] indie pop,[13] alternative rock,[4] pop rock,[4][32] pop punk,[4][9][6][5][32] grunge,[42][16][41][43][15][32] bedroom pop,[7][11] and bubblegum pop.[8] Her sound has been compared to Green Day, Avril Lavigne, Paramore, Renforshort, Charlotte Sands, Upsahl, Wens, Liz Lokre, and BRDGS.[4][11][19] Mandel herself has cited Green Day, Avril Lavigne, Paramore, Simple Plan, Weezer, Hilary Duff, Taylor Swift, Julia Michaels, Leah Kate, Alanis Morissette, and Boygenius as inspirations.[4][6][9][44][45][46][32]

Personal life

Mandel moved from Toronto to Los Angeles in January 2022.[47] She suffered a fall in March 2023, breaking her nose, chin, and jaw and requiring four stitches and implants.[32] The incident left her unable to open her mouth for several months, and inspired her song "faceplant".[6][33][34][32]
